Suprising. I love Face ID, so much better than Touch ID was. No comparison and can't imagine going back. :)
I really tried to get on with it but just couldn’t. For me, Touch ID is better and faster. If my phone is on my desk I can quickly unlock it where as Face ID I’d have to tap to wake, swipe, wait, put my pass code in and then I’d be in. Or if I was walking and didn’t have my phone at the right angle I’d have to wait and then put my pass code in. I would say for me, Face ID worked 50% of the time, so there was little point in having it if I had to put in my passcode the other 50% of the time.

Paying with Apple Pay was also a pain and much slower than Touch ID. Especially on the tube in London it was a nightmare. You want to get thru the turn styles as quickly as possible but you have to double press the power button, have it at the right angle to capture your face and then put it at the RFID reader. With Touch ID, I can get my phone out of my pocket and unlock it as I’m getting it out with my thumb and present it at the RFID reader. I find Touch ID much more reliable. Paying for groceries too was just the same. You finish bagging your groceries, grab your phone, double press the power button, have it at just the right angle the present it to the chip and pin machine, but if it couldn’t recognise you, you have to put the passcode in anyway.

I also got fed up of the gestures for multitasking and the little pauses. So you swipe up and hold, then you switch to whatever app you want. Or you swipe up and hold, find the app you want to close, tap and hold again and then swipe that app away. Double tapping the home button and being able to immediately swipe away an app feels faster and more fluid.

I also ended up with a camera roll of screenshots I’d accidentally taken when holding my phone and pressing the power button and volume button at the same time. Two other coworkers experienced the same thing so I know it wasn’t just me.

I know the old adage ‘your mileage may vary’ but for me, Face ID wasn’t a winner. I grew to hate my phone. I had it from launch day last year until last Friday so it wasn’t like I just tried it for a week or so.

Each to their own and all that.

I was set on the XS Max, now I'm 75% sure I'm going to stick with my X. And this coming from a guy who has purchased each new iPhone on launch since the 3gs. I am more interested in the new watch. I just can't stomach spending $2000 on a watch and phone when it would only be marginally better than my X.

Just want to see what all X owners are doing.

For the poll, I know the XR might not be an upgrade from the X but curious who's getting what.
I'm not planning to upgrade.... my only issue with my X 64 is the periodic lack of space, so I'm always cleaning up on apps, photos... I might consider an upgrade to XS 256 if I get a *really* good deal.

Getting the Max because it's my constitutional obligation and right to exercise my IUP;)

I did pull the trigger on the Max. First time trying a "plus" size and I am totally being a hypocrite as I have called the 6/7/8 Plus phones a "brick in your pocket" so many times. If there wasn't a Max I would have kept my X for another year and owned it and sold it. The announcement for the Xs was underwhelming.

But I need my fix and getting the "Max" (what a stupid name, they are 2 for 2 on stupid naming, why not call the "X" the "10" so everyone doesn't call it the iPhone (letter) X.) fits the bill for a year.

Xr looks nice, but my fix doesn't allow me to buy budget phones.

I was a Plus phone owner before the X. I find the X far too restrictive in landscape mode. I’m happily upgrading to the Xs Max. I’ve been missing the extra screen real estate all year.
Funny, exact same situation, but opposite conclusion. My iPhone X is all I ever wanted in a phone. I gave up on Plus-sized phones and never looked back.

No...the only reason I would consider it, and it’s irritating it’s the Apple business model, is because I’d like to have the control over the bokeh effect in photos (a little frustrated that the XR has this capability). I would possibly consider the X Max for the screen size and extra battery, but I just can’t go back to a phablet. I love my X.

I was a Plus phone user before the X, mostly because of the better cameras. The X has been a great phone, but upgraded to the Max for the screen real estate and better battery and camera features. I’m also looking forward to the dual SIM capability so that I don’t have to carry a work phone and a personal phone as much.

Since I’m with the upgrade program I will. I’m paying almost the same amount as I do for my X, and realistically I know I’m not going to ever have the phone long enough to pay it off and not have an installment to pay. If this was 7 years ago with subsidized pricing through the carriers with 2yr contracts, I wouldn’t upgrade.

Same here. Another big advantage is I will be getting a fresh battery for another 11/12 months.

No upgrade for me (first time since the 3G). When all said and done i paid $1700+ for my 64gb X, case and AC+.

Looked at upgrading through my carrier as I’d save $150 but even then, I’d be paying over $1500+$250 applecare+tax.

Wouldn’t be able to stomach a mere $700 loss in reselling only to lose 700+ next year if I were to upgrade again.

Haha so wrong.

Have you personally handled the iPhone XS Max yet? I mean, aside from reading the tech specs, the difference between the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone XS Max is only 6g of a difference, which is not *that* much of a difference. Where the iPhone 8 Plus= 202 g and iPhone XS Max =208 g. Then if you had a case on top of that to both phones, I don’t think the user will notice that much of a weight difference.

Absolutely, upgrading to Max. I love the Plus sized phones, and I'm looking forward to having an X format in that size.

I went from 6+ to X and the biggest issue for me for the switch has been the difference in width of the screen. My hands cramp faster and I make more typing mistakes on the X.

So I have been excited to upgrade to a Plus-sized X all year. Now that I’ve seen what that device looks like, I’m just going to wait it out a bit longer.

The XS Max just doesn’t do enough outside of being bigger to justify spending the money on an upgrade this year. If next year’s Plus/Max phone doesn’t do it for me either, at least the XS Max will go down in price and will be a better option at that point.

I may end up sticking with the X until 2020 if next years phones are as boring an upgrade as this years.

There are a few cases where FaceID doesn't work as well. The situation you describe is the same for me. When I'm working and the phone is on my desk, touchID was so much more convenient to access the device.

Can someone tell me what you would actually get by upgrading? They always mix new hardware features with software update features so it’s hard to say what the XS would actually provide vs the X

Thank you in advance!

1m water resistance for X (IP67)
2m water resistance for XS (IP68)

256GB max storage X
512GB max storages XS

XS weighs 0.1grams more than X

A11 in X
A12 in XS (slightly faster)

Smart HDR, bokeh, and depth of field appear to be exclusive to the XS. With auto HDR used in the X. (Though this is some BS because the X can do this stuff it just won’t because...)

Extended dynamic range for video up to 30fps on XS

Stereo Recording on XS

Can’t justify it this year, its not a matter of cost, would just be a waste. Besides, I already have a significantly large iPad 12.9 iPad Pro with cellular and pencil.

Looking at my future, I am going to perform a major upgrade cycle in 2020:

- iPhone Plus
- iPad Pro 12.9 hopefully with OLED
- MacBook Pro 15 inch
- Watch 6

What I have now is meeting my needs. But I can understand wanting the shiny and new. Would have loved if Apple had revised the AirPods. If not, I will pick that up later this month and a wireless charging pad since AirPower is obviously dead.
