Can't wait to see the second quarter results. I think people will hold their devices for a longer period of time and at some point this milking process will slow down. It's just a matter of time, just like the financial crisis that began in 2008, the bubble will burst open.

I agree consumers will retain their devices much longer because of the rising costs of smartphones and there usually are not major changes year to year with smart phones. But I don’t see this as a transition that will negatively affect Apple, mainy being they have an expansive iPhone line and a price point for everyone from the SE all the way to the iPhone X.

IMO people retaining their phones longer not because of the higher price, but because the hardware improvement is plateauing. I mean sure the A12 will be super fast chip, but even the A9 today is no slouch and still offer good enough performance for most people. We already past the time where every year the hardware is significantly improved.

And Apple knows that, thus they are branching out into the accessories and service products. Ie. They don’t mind you keeping your iPhone longer, so they offer you things like Apple Watch or HomePod instead.

You make some valid points and I agree with what you’re saying. And I have mentioned before in another post, that processor improvements don’t really relate to something that the average consumer will appreciate on a year-to-year basis with iPhones. As you said, the A9processor in the 6S/SE is still a very powerful processor as it is. Where the A11 bionic processor comes in the play is with Face ID an augmented reality capabilities.

And I also agree that products like the Apple Watch, HomePod, AirPods, are successful products that all integrate really well with the iPhone, but generate a large amount of revenue as well for Apple. And where Apple has demonstrated growth is there services with Apple Pay, iTunes, Apple Music, etc.

I dunno I know for my contract with my annual upgrade it would cost more to keep it over two years than trade it in after a year

Keep holding out hope there bud. Have at it.

Well here in Qatar it's been about a 500 riyal ($137) drop in price.

Apple is not going to drop the price of the X and as to the whole discontinuing it argument, that's not due to sluggish sales it's that Apple is just not going to sell it as a year old model for less.

Carriers have deals all the time but that has nothing to do with Apple.

Exactly. Apple doesn’t want the current 5.8 iPhone X to compete with the 2018 5.8 iPhone X. Because there isn’t likely going to be a lot of facing outward or internal changes. And naturally, if Apple were to retain the current 5.8 iPhone X in their lineup, the consumer will likely choose the more affordable, cheaper device being they resemble each other, minus the enhancements the customer doesn’t care about.

For example: Apple released the Series 3 Apple Watch in October 2017, they discontinued the Series 2 Apple Watch with the release of Series 3. Why? Because Apple knew it would directly compete with the Series 3 being they are almost identical, with a few exceptions with audible Siri, LTE and processor. Its to close in competition, which would directly affect sales.
