Auto brightness off worked a small bit for me but my 6s is still both brighter and cooler then the x with all settings the same.

Under settings /general /accessibility /display accommodations turn off auto brightness and then play with the brightness slider.
This. Toggling auto brightness in and off made the screen blindingly bright.

I'm having the same experience. 7+ is nitivrbakg brighter than my X. Don't really see much difference in the screens with the exception of much richer colors in the X. But it's definitely dimmer. No comparison to the note either (I'm using one now). Note 8 has hands down the best screen and it's not even close

I have mine arriving today but went and checked out the X at the Apple Store. I was expecting the OLED screen to pop but it actually looked less "punchy" than my 7 Plus....disappointing for sure...especially when compared to a Note 8.

I checked all the settings and it was set to max brightness. I tried with True Tone on and that did not help either and made it look more yellow. I love True Tone on my iPad but not impressed on the X.

Overall, I was let down by the contrast/brightness for sure.

You're not alone! I got the iPhone X delivered today to replace my iPhone 6 Plus. I immediately noticed the brightness was not the same as my iPhone 6 Plus. Yes, I adjusted the brightness and turned off auto brightness. It's really making me question keeping this phone because it's got a yellower tone than my iPhone 6 Plus. As you mentioned, with True Tone turned on, the screen is even more yellow. Hopefully, you won't have any problems with the one you actually get. I will be taking my phones to Apple to see what Genius Bar can do or will say. Good luck!

Coming from an iPhone 7, my screen is really bright, too bright if I crank it up.

Here is my theory.

I think it has to do either with power management or more likely heat management.

Yesterday morning and most the day (got my iPhone X early morning) I also noticed the screen was underwhelming. And yes I turned auto brightness and True Tone off as a test. But I was also noticed the phone getting hot as I was restoring from backup and doing tons of app installs. Then of course I’m sure that spotlight was indexing everything.

Later in the day the iPhone was all caught up. Much cooler AND the screen appeared to be brighter and have more “punch”. This is in all sorts of different lighting conditions (as it was when I noticed the screen didn’t look amazing). Continues to look way better today as well.

I know this is purely anecdotal but I’m am curious if others have seen the same.

It gets brighter when the glue dries

Same, I checked and it was off so turned on then back off and after turning brightness back up it was a lot brighter

You mean all the reviews from people Apple hand-picked to send review units to?

iPhone X is out in the wild. Anyone is free to make reviews about it. Including haters.

It'll be the last prerelease review unit they ever get from Apple, but yea they can bash it.

That is a bizarre article, and based on many of the comments, is questionable at best. It's strange but I guess without "Tom" Toms Guide is not quite the same.

When Displaymate tested the Note 8 they said "Galaxy Note8 Sets New Record in Display Performance," especially brightness (measured 1t over 1200 nits). But Toms Guide says the Note 8's display brightness is below average. Uh, I have a real problem with that kind of nonsense, even though I have an iPhone X on order.

I have the galaxy S8 and have had them side by side with X in Apple store with maximum brightness on both. Have to admit, even though I could not find much difference on colour, both look beautiful, the S8 screen did look to me brighter. Having had galaxy S8 since April, the X feels better in hand. But nevertheless, both great devices. OS is what separates them more.

It’s very good but no Note 8. Liking it though and better than my 6 or 7 now.

I finally had a chance to play around with an X and I was impressed. AT&T store didn't have any stock but had it on display. Very nice! Can't wait till next week when mine should arrive. Also, the guy helping me at the AT&T store had one and to say he was impressed with it is an understatement. I asked him if it was okay out in bright sun (I live in AZ) and he said yes then took me outside to show me. It was brighter than my current LG V20 and that is all I cared about.

The dim screen was the first thing I noticed about the new iPhone. I checked out all of the iPhone X models on display at my local Apple store and it was common across the board. I am not saying that the screen was unusable, it’s just I expected that the screen could get about 25% brighter (estimate based on iPhone 7 plus comparison).

With that said, the screen is a great screen! It’s just a little dim.

Wished iOS gives us an ability to set values on brightness. I use Notification Toggle on my Androids that can do this. I have to manually do it with iPhones.

Usually my brightness values is 33%/50%/75%/100% but not all phones will have same brightness if set to that.

33% indoors / nighttime browsing
50% indoors / watch a video
75%-100% is my normal settings because I am under direct sunlight most of the day.

Actually my G5 is pretty dim. I need it set to 75% or higher. I set it differently to my V20. I need it to be about 7% higher than it. Like battery % indicators, the values on each phones brightness isn't the same either.

I also don't trust auto-brightness. It actually kills the battery more because a sensor is turned on. Anytime I used an iPhone set on auto, I would nighttime browse the web in a dark room and auto would set it at 5%-10% when I prefer 25% because I watch videos as well. But my SE at 50% is about equal to my LG phones at 75%.

The nits on the X is half of the Note8. Just wished iOS gave us toggles to set values. Battery % and auto-brightness are just things I don't trust 100% of the time.

Wow glad some people are seeing what I see when they tried out the test models. I feel like this is the Emperor's New Clothes... everyone saying how great the X's screen is but when compared side by side with my 6s, my 6s kills it in brightness and colors. I tested a X at the Apple Store and Target and the results were the same. In both cases I had both my phone and the X set with TT & NS off.

I opened the Maps app and the pastel greens were so much nicer on my 6s, on the X they lean more olive green, or warmer. Same with the other colors as well.

For reference, I'm a fan of Apple and was excited about the X until I saw the screen for myself.

I’m having the same experience. Very dim display. When I adjust the brightness it is responsive up to halfway up the slider, and then it stops getting brighter. Hope to hear a solution for this!
Switching off auto brightness allows the display to go much brighter but I have the same problem as you except for me I’d say the last quarter of the slider is unresponsive.

I have exactly the same experience. I also feel that on the iPhone X display it is harder to read as everything seems a little washed out. Especially if compared to an iPhone 8. Even though the iPhone X display is more sharp.

Can anyone share this experience?

Such a terrible comparison without using samsungs display modes and showing outdoor and indoor usage like displaymate does. You all know the S8 and Note 8 screens are the best...you just rather not believe it. Where is the resolution comparisons for overall sharpness, where is the ppi comparison, where are the color gamut comparisons in various display modes and the peak srgb comparisons, where is the max brightness comparisons, where are the display mode comparisons, where are the customization comparisons? Samsung's galaxies' screens are just more advanced.

Welp, that comment didn’t age well.

Noticed when I was charging and installing apps the screen brightness slowly went down. Trying to turn it back up did nothing. It’s gotta be a thermal protection of some sort.

Once phone was done installing apps it cooled and the slider started working.
