I'm not sure what advantages meeting at an Apple Store provides when store staff have been instructed not to pursue thieves, even when it comes to Apple Store inventory.
Probably correct. Regardless, it does turn away potential thieves because it isn't worth it to them. They'll pursue someone else.

Update: The thief still has the phone and his Apple ID is still associated with the phone. And find my iPhone is still on.

Strange. I thought he would sell it by now.

Man the police sure work fast in Canada! I'm jealous. 4 days to work a grab and go theft case from theft to arrest. Here in the US you'd be lucky to get a cop to call you back after a few weeks to even hear your issue.

Curious to me how the police found the responsible person, know he has done it before, but need information from Apple before they can arrest him?

Strange. Glad you got it figured out. Did you get your phone back?

Still no word from Apple, its been two weeks, they said they'll respond in two weeks. Tomorrow is that two weeks. What should I do from here? Anyone here work for law enforcement in general. They know who it is.

Are they responding to you, or the police? If the police, are they complying with legal process? Often the quoted time frame is really just an estimate.

Recommend you reach out to the police or whoever told you two weeks to inquire.

BTW, I am still curious how the police know who did it, but still need information provided by Apple to proceed.

Yeah they are responding to me, but I don't want to flood them with questions. They were able to trace back the person because he was using his data while he was talking to me through letgo. That IP address was either gonna be a pre paid sim or it will show back to a billing address. With that billing address, they found out that someone at that address has been convicted with stolen merchandise and etc.

Strange. Apple shouldn't know the subscriber to an IP address. That would be the internet service provider (Spectrum, etc).

No, they got the IP address was from Letgo. Police contacted the person who owns the IP address, which is a Canadian carrier. but now they need more sufficient proof to prove that this person has the phone. Police want to get information from Apple right now because they want to see what IP address and find my iPhone data they can collect. but there time period to respond is two weeks. and there's still no response. its been 13 days.

I see. I would wait until tomorrow, and call (or email or whatever).

In a previous post you said there is video evidence but the video is not clear. Do you know if the video quality is sufficient to back a claim of the money being handed over or not? because if not, the thief can still claim that he handed you over the money and then it still becomes your word against his with the video not being able to verify if money was exchanged or not.

I feel bad for you, but in today’s environment I would never publicaly meet up with someone to sell anything, I don’t care how safe the environment is you just never know. I also keep my selling to eBay.

Hopefully you get some positive results

No, they know its him. he's been convicted of theft before.

Just blacklist the phones IMEI number rendering it useless.

Blacklisted it the moment it was stolen.

Sigh

IMO, there are more scammers on eBay than you will find meeting personally. The physical danger is less of course, but I am also hesitant to sell on eBay.

Sad.

Oh I agree that there are a lot of scammers on EBay, but I personally would never risk my life meeting a stranger in person. You can get robbed and hurt even in well lit and populated public places. My friend was attacked in Times Square once when selling a pair of vintage Air Jordan’s.

To me selling on EBay as long as you go through PayPal/insure your packages, you’re at least covered. Just my opinion

Final Update. I guess. Not going to be getting back this phone. There isn’t sufficient evidence to prove that he is guilty. The phone is still connected to the same Apple ID as the day it was stolen. Sigh. I guess this is the end of it.

So he asked you to sign out of iCloud just so he could look at it? And when you did, he ran off with the phone?

That sucks, dude.
Bad luck, buy I would never have the phone unlocked in front of him.

i am so sorry for your loss, some people are just so ****ty. similar thing actually happened to me just literally yesterday. i have had my iPhone x for sale on offerup and i met with a buyer in an apartment complex and he asked if i could drive him to an atm a couple of blocks away from the apartments. so i take him and when he got back in the car, he snatched and grabbed the phone and the box. i chased the thief back to his apartment complex and eventually found which apartment he was in. called the local police and he was cornered and was charged with robbery along with possession of marijuana. i did get my phone back, and learned my lesson. meet somewhere safe like the police station and take the money first.

Glad you’ve learned your lesson; what you describe was extremely risky behavior.
