They are not complicated, Took me max a day to learn - if those simple gestures are hard to learn, then its about time to get that brain exercised :p
And in 2007 it took them less than a minute to learn. That's the difference between Steven Jobs and a bunch of corporate heads.

Unfortunately, this is what happens with Steve Jobs is out of the picture. His vision was one of simplicity and ease of use. As the article basically says, in 10 years we've gone from something anyone could just pick up and intuitively use to needing a tutorial on complex gesture controls.

Dear God, how long will the ghost of Steve Jobs haunt these Forums?

So? Touch ID also never worked 100% flawlessly for absolutely everyone, but for some reason suddenly it's no problem, while Face ID is (generally speaking) a failure.
I agree with you. Touch id2 fails 30% of the time for me. That’s on multiple devices with 5 different scans of the same finger. Face id has not failed once for me. That includes mornings, with or without glasses, laying on my back even in a pitch black room.

I recently purchased an iPhone 8. I looked at the X and passed on it due to no home button and face ID. I unlock my phone numerous times a day while it's sitting on a desk. This is a no go with the X. Not a fan of face ID and I'd rather have a home button, on the front, with a print sensor. Now IF the X would have had the sensor in the screen as was rumored, I would have got the X as it's a gorgeous phone!

Still though I don't have any regrets and am digging the 8 (non plus)..

The desk thing is actually why I really like FaceID. I keep my iPhone in a $6 stand on my desk. If I see an incoming text or notification out of the corner of my eye, I simply turn to look at the iPhone X and it unlocks and displays the full text. I don't have to touch the phone or take my fingers off the keyboard of my desktop computer. It's just a turn of the head (if I put my iPhone off to the side..where I usually keep it, or a glance down if I position it under my primary display.

Both TouchID and FaceID have their weaknesses, so the ideal biometric solution would be to have both. I also have an iPad Pro that I use throughout the day, every day... so I have used both TouchID and FaceID many times a day since getting the iPhone X in December. When you ignore the situations where TouchID or FaceID don't work, and compare how they work when they do work, FaceID is much more convenient in my opinion. But we tend to focus on the times when technology like this doesn't work, and the method that fails the most will vary from person to person and from one situation to the next. Just like the author of the article linked to in the original post, I am nearsighted and I have noticed that if I wake up and reach for my iPhone, the instinct is to move it too close to my face for FaceID to work. I keep it in a wireless charging stand on my nightstand, so I can also unlock it just by looking at it, but I have to pick my face up off the pillow. So in the bedroom, TouchID wins. On my walk to and from work, when I'm frequently wearing gloves, FaceID wins.

After using both the iPhone X and iPad pro on a daily basis for a month, I would also say that I prefer the Home Bar over the Home Button. The interface of the iPhone X just feels more fluid and faster. The Home Button on my iPad now feels kind of clunky. I'd say it took me all of half a day to get used to the gestures on the iPhone X, but I agree with the article that the Home Button is probably the better design for the masses. The Home Button is so iconic, and it's a key element of the "you already know how to use it" design. The iPhone X is still very easy to use, but the average person does not already know how to use it, and that's a bit of a problem.

I honestly call bologna at everyone saying how 'flawless' FaceID is. Have you ever used it at a weird angle? Landscape mode? In your bed on your side? You're really claiming 100% accuracy here?

And I more often than not get the 'FaceID' screen before the home screen comes up.... I rarely have an experience where it instantly recognizes me.

Anyone who says FaceID or TouchID are flawless are guilty of hyperbole. It's widely known that there are situations where FaceID won't work, just as there are situations where TouchID won't work. The appeal of one over the other probably depends a lot on the individual and how frequently they find themselves in a situation where one or the other doesn't work. Every day I use FaceID countless times on my iPhone X and TouchID countless times on my iPad Pro. Most of the time both work just fine for me. I prefer FaceID because it feels more convenient and seamless to me. My iPhone X instantly recognizes me most of the time... or at least it happens so quickly that I do not perceive any significant delay. I do see the FaceID logo when I launch a secure app, but it quickly disappears and the app is unlocked.

There have certainly been cases where it appears FaceID is unusually unreliable for someone, and it does take it some time to learn your different looks. I set mine up wearing the glasses I usually wear, and the first two or three times I tried to unlock without my glasses on FaceID failed. After two or three failures it learned to consistently recognize me with or without my glasses. TouchID has its quirks for some as well. TouchID has never liked my left thumb, and frequently fails to recognize it no matter how many times I try to re-scan it. It's very dependable with my right thumb, as long as that thumb is totally dry and I'm not wearing gloves of course.

I only had the X for 10 days but in that time face ID did work 95% of the time for me. When out and about I thought it was pretty use full but like most others when at home or at a desk or on my bed I found it not as convenient as touch ID as it requires a different type of interaction with the device to open it up. I think over time this may have started to bother me as I do like unlocking my Iphone on a desk.

The realty is IMHO that Face ID is more or a compromise than an innovation, Apple had to launch a bezel less device to keep up with the competition and that makes touch ID redundant for now. That being said I do think Apples version is the best version of face unlock to date as it is secure.

I have an appreciation for both Face ID and Touch ID. Ideally, it would have been intereting if both could have co-existed together on the iPhone X, but Apple isn't about options in that sense. Face ID is Apples future, regardless if others approve or disapprove. I feel Face ID has a strong start and it can only improve from here. Gesture controls are intuitive and the home button is a thing of the past. I look forward to the future changes for Face ID and how it will expand beyond the iPhone.

I don't experience most of these problems ... and as far as just being able to pick it up and figure it out ... it took me about 5 minutes to learn the new gestures. They're not hard ... at all ... and anyone can figure them out. In fact, after a while I got a little confused using a normal iPhone because I got so used to the gestures of the X. Took me a minute to remember where things were before. It just isn't that complicated. People have been able to just "figure it out" because the interface has remained relatively unchanged for years, not just because it's simple. People are used to things ... and people hate change. As for morning squinty eyes ... I don't have this problem either. Even with half my face covered with a pillow, I've used Face ID so much that it knows my face well and it opens without issues.

As for Touch ID ... it was far from flawless. I've had it fail a lot more often than Face ID. It is frustrating when either of them don't work ... but I don't miss Touch ID at all.

FaceID doesn’t work when laying flat, and it doesn’t work in landscape. Those are key operating parameters. So I don’t use it like that, hence it works flawlessly.

And yes I use it on my side in bed to unlock. In fact I just did when writing this message. I’m in a pitch black room, with puffy eyes, weird hair, unshaven and a double chin. And it just works.

Face ID blows!! Apple talks about doing **** right. They don’t know right anymore. There all about getting your money and giving you a product with terrible features. I’m glad the X sales are down. I wish they wouldn’t be able to sell one more X so they would bring back Touch ID.

FaceID is an epic invasion of privacy. In addition to being terribly unreliable.

I’m sure Pablo Escobar would not use it or any other criminal. This will make Apple lose lots of sales to millions of smart criminals and other smart people that have a disdain for privacy violation.

See major stock price drop today.

I don't believe Apple is about "Getting" your money, you make the conscious decision to purchase a product and if you're not content with it, take advantage of the return period Or revert to a device that has Touch ID if you're this disgruntled over it.

Also, I don't think Face ID is as bad as you're making it sound, even though it is for you. It has its drawbacks and inconsistencies, but it's still a security feature That will Continue to improve. The majority likely are accepting of it.

How so? What exactly do you think Face ID invades upon? What about other cameras that take your picture every single day? Are those invading your privacy?

Also, just so you're aware, no one has access to your personal data on the iPhone, that's stored in the secure enclave portion On the iPhone.

If I remember correctly when Touch ID first appeared it also was pretty inconsistent.
Apple even did a quick update so it would work better.
Touch ID worked ok for me and it just got better and better.
For me Face ID works better than Touch ID in the beginning, so I´m confident it will work great in the end, just as Touch ID does now.

Have you ever read the FB messenger user agreement?

Just got my X yesterday. So far loving it. True I still keep pushing the bottom of the screen but that's just habit and I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Love FaceID for apps (after all I'm looking at the screen when I open them so don't need to do anything). Biggest minus for me so far is battery percentage missing but I've put the battery widget on so I can cope

some website comes with bad news, overall responses: ''clickbait article'' , ''rubbish website''

same website as above comes with good news about the iPhone X, overall responses: ''you see, the iPhone X is the one to get/buy!"

okay

Nah, I tend not to pay attention to either one, both want clicks, its what they are in business for
They are more like good cop / bad cop so its a wash
I prefer to go and test out the device myself and form my own opinion about it
