Not sure where you got that. For me is better because is larger screen (didn't say larger then plus) in a much smaller factor and I think that's what others are saying also. I always liked the larger display on a plus models and always been tempted to get it but every time I did hold it on my hand or put it in my pockets I got put off. The overall size of it is just to large for my liking. Not to mention that the thick bezels for me are just not acceptable with today's technology advancements.

I agree with that. The plus model is just too big to comfortably handle on a daily basis. I’ve always had the smaller version but this year, I thought of taking the plunge. I always thought it’s too big to fit in my jeans pockets but it seems to be working much better than I expected.

For those of us with larger hands, the plus feels perfect and Ive never had a problem fitting a plus in my jeans in 3+ years of use. The X and the non-plus iPhones feel are so uncomfortable to type on. Heck I would take a slightly larger plus, like the Samsung S8 Plus, now that is super comfortable to type on.

Actually, the Samsung S8 Plus is frankly a much better looking phone than the X.

I put my money where my mouth is and got an X. I love the phone, but the screen size is not great. Giving it a try for a week to see if I can adjust, otherwise 8 Plus here I come...

The 5.8 dislay and form factor is to small for me (Which actually surprised me, as I was expecting the dislay to be larger.) The 6.5 iPhone X is likely more in line of what I will be looking forward to in Fall 2018.

Me too. This phone I got because I had to upgrade to something when I switched carriers. This is a 10 month device for me while I wait for the X Plus model of Oct 2018. Right now after adding a case to the horrible physical design of the X, its a lot more comfortable to use (its too narrow and slices into my fingers while holding it, and super slippery) and I have a feeling I am going to keep the X for 10 months.

I still don't get how the X's screen is "too small". It has the same viewing and more pixels than the 8+.

You didnt read any of the thread. Read the thread, it explains the concept of usable screen space "square footage" and why the Plus has a larger screen

I won't get into that argument. As it seems people will always look for a reason to complain. Pixel-wise, the X has a bigger screen, hence more information can be displayed.

I hardly see that as a con.

Just because something has more pixels doesn’t mean it has a bigger screen.

A 40 inch 4K tv has more pixels than a 65 in 1080p tv but the 65 inch tv is still bigger.

I get displaying more on the screen but my moms 7plus is significantly wider than my x and that makes a difference.

I’m perfectly fine with my screen size on the X heck I wish it was a tad smaller.

And yet the 60 incher displays less information by nature of being 1080p. So what's your point?

The point is that on a smaller screen more pixels might show more info but it might not be readable simply because the size of that info is too small.

The problem is, that's not how it works at all.

1) iPhone does not use a 1:1 mapping system. Just because an iPhone may have more physical pixels doesn't mean it displays more information. An app sees the world in "points." Compared to the Plus, the iPhone X actually has a smaller canvas for apps to draw in (see Points below). This canvas gets projected onto the screen. No matter how high the resolution the screen is, the canvas is what matters.

2) Apple changed the definition of "pixel." With the iPhone X, a pixel is 2 sub-pixels (RG or BG). With iPhone 6/7/8 Plus, a pixel is 3 sub-pixels (RGB). This is why images are less sharp on iPhone X. The X has 739,800 fewer sub-pixels.

3) Poor utilization of space. As others have mentioned, the iPhone X uses space poorly such as introducing much more blank space in the status bar (height doubled compared to Plus) and below the keyboard area (for Home bar).

4) iPhone X has a smaller physical display (glass) area compared to Plus. In terms of square inches or square mm, the X is smaller.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = Complaints

Yep, exactly. I am finding the font size i used on the plus a bit smaller than I would like on the X.

Yes this is true. But it still doesn't change the fact that iPhone X displays much more information than the iPhone 8+. Why?

With 1080p you can only view one side of the information gamut. If you want to view the entire information, you need to scale down said information to fit your projection medium. 4K displays much more information because you have more than twice the amount of pixels. Hence you can view more information.

How does this work with how Apple changed it method of display? Simple. Now Apple uses their retina technology to make everything look sharper and real print like. How can they achieve this? Well, the more pixels help this out because now curves can be represented better. Shades are more accurate and colors are also properly balanced in RGB. Basically Apple is using the extra information projection not to project more of an image (more expanded information), but rather to improve the quality of the information already presented (smoother, sharper, and color banaced). Hence, when viewing a 1080p video, you really see colors and images look real and detailed. Because you have a 1080 screen (plus a little extra) to view that information. On the 8? You are stuck at 1080p and hence that's it. Retina only helps in the OS, and how things are organized and viewed.

This is why the iPhone X's higher resolution screen is much better than the 8's and has more capacity than the 8. That is why when the iPhone 4 came out, the screen was such a hit. We had the same screen size but it showed so much more information just by uping resolution.

iPhone X displays less information because of the smaller canvas size.

In your example, you're assuming a 1:1 mapping between the input and the display. But that's not the case with iPhone.

A perfect example is the difference between iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. The latter has a Retina display but does it display more information for the user? No. The image is sharper, but the same amount of text and graphics are displayed horizontally and vertically even though the resolution is doubled.

iPhone X has a smaller canvas size compared to iPhone 6/7/8 Plus. This means less info can be displayed. The X may display sharper images, but that's not what developers call more "information."

Again, you are displaying more information to the user. However, the extra information is being use to make the original information much more robust or clear. How so? As you stated, images became sharper and curves smoother.

To achieve that you had to input and output more information for the perception to be made. You can't do that if the resolution didn't increase allowing the the 4 to display said new information.

Both of you are using “information” in different context here.

And it'll still be bigger than the Plus.
The screen is longer and therefore it is "Bigger". But, the screen isn't as wide as the Plus the keyboard is smaller, it's harder to type on. Webpages look funny in portrait and when in Landscape there is not enough screen to show the length of the page.

I compare it to trying to read something written on receipt (adding machine) paper. Do they still have Adding Machines?

I returned mine and went back to my 6+.

iPhone X is grippable and useable with one hand in some situations
Once you get to a 6.5 inch screen most people are going to need 2 hands. It’s actually a user choice preference
Apple might be better off with 6.1 a little bigger yet more manageable by more people

The X is very comfortable to hold and has a decent screen size. Having said that I’ll most likely upgrade to the X plus whatever it’s called this year.

I am leaning towards the same and keeping the X. The plus is a bit boring to me after 4 years of use and the huge bezels are such a waste of potential screen real estate it is irritating to look at now!
