My iPhone X went into the washing machine for about 5 minutes and survived with just a few scratches around the steel band. Don’t think I’d submerge it on purpose, but good to know it can survive accidental dips in water.

Not an X but my wife's 7 has been in a lake while in her pocket and also thrown in the bathtub by my son. It survived with zero issues.

It’ll survive going through more than you’d expect. Not gonna lie i occationally shower with my apple watch on. Ive done it with my S0 and now with my S3. Sometimes its on purpose other times i just forget its on. As far as the iPhone... I’ve taken my phone into the shower and just laid it on a small shelf and listened to music. Never had any issues whatsoever. I threw my phone in my girlfriends pool for a $5 bet that nothing would he wrong at all... i won the bet.

Well, as I recall, the more recent versions of the Apple Watch are actually waterproof (vs. just being water resistant).

Actually, the AW3 has an ISO water resistance rating of 50 metres. Not so for the phone.

Waterproof = regardless of depth or duration = impervious to any sort of water ingress.

I really don't see us ever having electronics that could sit at the bottom of the Marianas trench for several years and be unharmed.

As for the videos - keep in mind that individual phone water resistance will vary. Lots of youtube videos from people throwing their phones 30 feet or dropping them from 10 and not having any detrimental effect. Me, I lean over in my parking garage and it shatters with a fall of 2 feet.

The resistance rating is so you feel comfortable using it in real world conditions - out in the rain, it falls into a shallow pool, etc.

If you take it swimming - well, remember that the warranty doesn't cover water damage - hope you have AC+.

Also, our glass-backed phones will not do well against ceramic or porcelain...so drop it in the toilet, tub or a splash pad and the gaskets won't save you from the water getting through those cracks in your phone.

Coming from a 6 Plus, the iPhone X is my first waterproof phone. I just can’t bring myself to enjoy the claimed waterproofing. It just feels sooo wrong to get my CAD$1,500 iPhone wet.

Has anybody stress tested it? How reliable is the water resistance in the iPhone X?

I suggest that you treat your iPhone like it is not water resistant. If water gets inside, Apple will say it is water damaged and void your warranty.

Very true BUT I did the same thing with my S0 lol
Same here. Even took it snorkeling a few times ...

My iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, developed a crackling speaker after being submerged once (only six inches or so, in fresh water) and in the shower twice (not in the water, directly) ... so I'm not taking any chances with my X.

Thats just from the speaker getting wet. My iPhone did the same thing in the shower.

Just wanted to give my two cents on the matter...

I got my iPhone X replaced by applecare because the back glass shattered from a fall less than 30 cm, got a new phone, a week later took a shower with it, not even close to the water, wasn't even a hot shower, phone died from a couple of drops of water, took it to the store, and the water damage indicator was red.

Im trying to get my phone replaced without Applecare... Such a mess

Why would you feel the need to take your phone in the shower with you in the first place? And I highly doubt it was just a 'few drops of water', it likely got more saturated than that. Even so, water resistance is merely a rating, not a guarantee. Regardless, it's a risk bringing it in the shower anyways.

Totally agree. Complete lunacy.

This isn’t a diving watch that is designed to be submerged or used with impunity around water.

I didn't take my phone in the shower, merely put it close, for music purposes, like thousands of people do. Like I have done with the iPhone 5, 6, 6s and now the X.
And are you really assuming that was more than few drops? I'm just sharing my experience, not trying to prove anything to you.

This is what you said below. Everyone reading your Post would interpret you took your iPhone in the shower based off your wording. Regardless it got wet because of your choice. And you speaking of thousands of people that take their iPhones near a shower, they also take the risk, which you can see what happened to you.

got a new phone, a week later took a shower with it

And-

like thousands of people do. Like I have done with the iPhone 5, 6, 6s and now the X.

Except none of those other iPhones are water resistant besides the X. Either way, you bring your iPhone around water, and you take the chance of compromising the water resistance, which in your case, you did.

And are you really assuming that was more than few drops? I'm just sharing my experience, not trying to prove anything to you.

You initially made it sound like you brought your iPhone X into the shower from your first Post, which I would assume your X would "Have more than a few drops" of water". You have to ask yourself, what is it worth even bringing your iPhone X near the shower anyways? It's still got wet regardless and Apple doesn't cover water damage.

I used my iPhone 7 Plus during scolding hot showers for over a year and it still works perfectly fine. There have been many cases where I had lots of drips of water all over the device. It got to a point where I stopped caring about using my iPhone near or in water.

Given the iPhone X has the same IP67 water resistance, I imagine it would hold up equally as well.

Your mileage may vary!

It's not just mileage, it's also the glue lottery you play. Just like the binning lottery with CPUs, glue lottery either provides a strongly resistant phone, or one that'll fail in a mist.

This is what you said below

Again, Im not trying to prove anything to you, I'm just sharing my experience for the guy who asked.
Sorry that you feel the need of convince me that I did something wrong.

In any case, I submitted the issue, and the Apple support told me that the phone should survive these conditions, especially for a brand new phone, so they will be reviewing the problem, and will try to replace the phone.

I encourage you to read better, I stated "...got a new phone, a week later took a shower with it, not even close to the water, wasn't even a hot shower"

If you are trying to invalidate opinions with your thoughts or what you think really happened I don't know why you bother reading forums.

Again I just came here to be helpful to others with my experience, which is clearly, don't trust the water resistant.

He is not trying to invalidate. But at any rate, what @Relentless Power stated is correct. Everytime you bring an iPhone close to water, you risk damaging it as water splash resistance is a game of chance.

There is a reason why Apple does not cover water damages to iPhones. That statemente of "...they will trying to get you a new iPhone" is short for, you'll eventually pay for it.

I understand you're not trying to prove anything, I'm not even Interjecting that, you are. It's Not that you didn't thing "wrong", it's that you made the choice to bring your iPhone near water regardless, you said it had a "few drops on it", which still clearly compromised the water resistance. That's just the risk you took and its the aftermath of the choices.

In any case, I submitted the issue, and the Apple support told me that the phone should survive these conditions, especially for a brand new phone, so they will be revie

I'm actually surprised Apple would even tell you anything that your phone "Should survive those water conditions". Because they can't guarantee or even make any insinuation what your phone will or will not survive based on water exposure. Especially because they don't know what really happened themselves.

I stated "...got a new phone, a week later took a shower with it, not even close to the water, wasn't even a hot shower"

What does it matter? Your phone still got wet because of your own actions Bringing it near water. You said it yourself, water got on the surface of your iPhone and it clearly compromised the water resistance. So it doesn't matter if it was a hot shower or how close it was, clearly it was close enough that you got water on it. You don't have to justify your post to me, I'm just going off based off what you posted earlier.

If you are trying to invalidate opinions with your thoughts or what you think really happened I don't know why you bother reading forums..

I'm not trying to invalidate anything. I don't understand why you're questioning the water resistance when your phone got wet because of your own actions. That's exactly why Apple does not cover water resistance because of situations like yours bringing near the shower. It's just you don't want to hear others opinions that don't align with your Own views.

And please don't be dismissive of me reading forums and interjecting my own opinion, if you don't like what you read, you can simply ignore it. But the fact is, I am correct about what I stated, even if you don't want to believe it.

You actually are. Even Apple Watches have the same conditional warranty when it comes to water. Apple does not cover water damage, even if the device itself in this case is water resistant.

Had mine in my pocket in the pool, about 2 feet under and it’s a paperweight now. Could even see water in the cameras. Never again!

Regardless of the claims, there’s no way I’ll be intentionally submerging my X in water any time soon. That’s not happening. I’m just happy knowing I can use it in the rain - hopefully. That’s good enough for me.
