Does your iPhone XS/XS Max have worse cell signal than your prior phone on the same carrier?

Similar experience: I had an 8 Plus and an X, both Intel. I switched to an X with Qualcomm later and can share the exact same experience that you had by going from the Intel modem to the Qualcomm one. However, this time around it looks like it's the antenna design to blame. It has been posted many times based on the Apple technical documents shared and some other findings. In this case you can't really fix/improve it with software. It's just not a good design. Only Apple knows why they've decided to change the antenna design of the X.

I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere yet - only the modem differences as an issue. Any links?

If it’s antenna then maybe we just holding it wrong again (anntenagate 2.0)? I guess if that’s the case then someone will figure that out soon enough...

I think there's something about the form factor that makes it hard to put good antennas in, as the X wasn't as good as the 8+, even though the Qualcomm X was decent, since the Qualcomm X16 made the best out of the otherwise mediocre antenna design.

All the post here seems to be US carrier - related, anyone else from other parts of the world experiencing the same issue tho for cell/reception issue?

I'm in the UK. It has definitely not got worse coming from an iPhone 8, possibly a bit better I'd say

UPDATE: eat my words time about no problems ;-). I am starting to have problems with my
WIFI failing both 2.4 and 5 ghz when i am out side still works in house and bars look same but fluctuate a lot so outside WIFI is worse.
Since I also have only 1 sometimes two cell bars near my house hose seem to be worse today but not earlier this weekend so I guess I am joining the 40% with issues interesting changes hmm. In strong cell areas 3-4 i am still getting better results so far

No cellular issues whatsoever, but definitely have wifi problems. When it works, it's really fast. Internal speed test @ 1300 Mbps, maxing out my upload at about 500 as well. But it just stops working every now and then.

The only place I have issues with my Wifi especially the 5ghz is outside of my house— especially with my office to the farther away from where I am (more outside wall, and internal rooms between me and wifi router). But that has always been the case. And when I come home and reconnect before going in door my iphones (all of them including X) would grab the 2.4 ghz band and stay on it until I went and choose the band (I have them separated so I can do that).

What has gotten worse however is that in the outside area with all my previous iphones before the Xs the weak Wifi and or cell (I am in weak cell area so I rely on wifi a lot) I could still do data intensive apps with out them failing do to internet connections or never making connections like I am finding with my Xs. Calls always worked on the weak one to two bar cell signal (never tested it before what strenght was) and they still do find with myXs. But now if I want to do a data intensive app it is hard to do in this spot in front yard — cell does not help and I usually was connecting thru the Wifi - even though it showed 1-2 bars no problem with previous phones.

It thus for me just requires a different spot in yard with in house even at farthest distance (and lowest bars of Wifi — one bar maybe two) my Wifi speeds are as good as ever. I am unfortunately on next to lowest service with ISP and get about 75-80 mb down and 8-10 up so my limit has been that and it still works fine at that. However I did a test with a new app to me called Wi-Fi sweet spots. Rather than uploading to the AirPort Extreme and going out through my comcast cable modem it is testing speeds to the airport. In the test next to the router vs farthest in house I was getting from 1200 to 200-300 MB’s so there is a decline with distance probably though would have been similar but til this issue never tested with this app so was only looking at the speeds that my ISP plan allows in/out house for down/uploads. And testing outside in bad spot of front yard I am getting 10 or under mbs so its very weak now. Wondering if the aluminum siding on my house is causing issues with the sensitivity of my antenna on my Xs to my Wifi based on some discussions I had with someone about being able to bounce the Wifi outside if I put a foil covered board behind behind my airport? I may be all wet with this idea but that discussion with guy got me thinking about the one issue I have.

iPhone X’s max 512gb in London on ee.
First day delivery unit.

No problems on WiFi or lte network.

I’m actually getting faster download speeds compared to the X.

Almost half the voters and by reading the large thread it seems like people are becoming more agitated with apples lack of response.

I went from the X to the Max and have been getting about double (12 to 24) the speed that I was getting prior with Verizon. I haven't found any issues with Wifi speeds either. I am assuming we will see a 12.0.1 update today to resolve any connection problems people have been having.

It hasn't been very long and it's likely not a widespread issue. There should be a 12.0.1 release shortly to resolve any problems people are having. It's overblown as usual.

It’s a little disingenuous to call it overblown when you are not experiencing the issue. My phone is virtually useless on campus. I have no service when I used to have 1-2 bars. In addition WiFi speeds are sub 5Mbps, when it used to be 100Mbps. I’ve restored the phone, reset network settings and got a new SIM card. So either 40% of people got defective phones, or there’s is a serious issue.

I wouldn't look at a poll on this site as the deciding factor when it comes to how many people this is potentially affecting. People on this site take an issue and blow it up like it's a national crisis. Sure, it's a bit disingenuous to call it overblown, but it's also disingenuous to call it widespread at this point until it is fully investigated. All you can do is submit the issue to Apple and wait for a fix. I am sure Apple will have a 12.0.1 update any day now to address any people that are affected.

Okay, point taken. Let’s forget those in the thread. What about the likelihood that all 3 XS in my household are experiencing this issue? All three came from different assembly lines. Does that seem to indicate it’s more than a one off issue and potentially more widespread than some believe?

First I would say that's rather unfortunate. Bummer that you have to deal with it. In your case, I would think it's likely a carrier issue, but obviously it could be a device issue also. No real way to say whether it's widespread or not at this point. As of now all you can do is submit all of your issues to Apple while they investigate the problem. I would expect a point update today or Monday/Tuesday at the latest.

My call reception and sound is great. So much better then on the the 6s+ it replaced.
Especially on "speaker" I notice a huge improvement and I no longer have people saying "can you take me off speaker, You sound terrible.
Getting the same bars as before (generally 2), but almost always on LTE.
I’m very pleased. I’m no rivet counter - does it sound better than previous phone, is it faster and more responsive, is the camera better, does the OS run smooth, does it "feel" better in real world usage? These are my checkpoints and the answer is yes to all of them.

Carrier wouldn’t be a WiFi issue. I’ve been resetting my network settings daily just to accomplish the most basic tasks.

No one suggested this before but you could try forgetting the network on your iPhone and resetting the modem.

I can’t really offer any more help then that.

It really sucks when tech doesn’t work out.
