I went to a local Best Buy to see the Nano (nearby Apple store was way too crowded). And boy, the Mini sitting next to the Nano looks like something from the last century (ok, i'm exaggerating). Nano has a beautiful color lcd and it's so slim it's unbelievable. If I were to make a purchase decision right there, I would no doubt get the Nano impulsively.

But like some have mentioned, keep in mind that there are some Nano screen scratch horror stories floating around.

Everyone wants a nano more? Even the people that are posting about how the mini is better? Are you sure you didn't mistake yourself and maybe one or two friends for the other six or so billion people on the planet?

Even with all those that you stated up there, just look at the amount of people getting a nano...
FireWire Capable-who cares, i mean USB works fine for me...probally some care but this has been discussed somewhere...
Much more scratch resistant than the Nano.-iPods scratches...who cares about the extra resistance...not that the mini won't scratch at all...
Can boot from it.I've no idea about this one so i won't comment...
Works with hundreds of 3rd party add-ons.Yeah thats the only advantage that i'll see as the one that mini have...plus iPod nano works with MOST of the 3rd party ones...not all but most of them...you may not agree with most but probally u might say SOme but it doesn't really matter...
at the end of the day, everyone wants a nano more than the mini...even the people with mini's want the nano...

Depending on the age of his friend's computer, his friend might not have USB 2.0, and non-firewire is going to be very slow for him. The mini is alot more scratch-resistant to the nano- if you own a nano, this is the first thing you'll notice probably after half a day of use. Form-factor wise, the nano wins, but some people have a preference to the mini's colors. If the mini had a color screen, I'd (personally) choose it over a nano. Also, you have to factor in that the mini has superior battery life. (If only they had a flash-based mini... would be incredible battery life... *drool*...)

That is because its the new thing, that is all.

USB 1.1 and 2.0 are not capable of booting.

FireWire is, due to a higher sustained data rate. :)

People are buying it since its a fad, like the Furby, Tickle Me Elmo, Cabbage Patch Dolls, etc... Its the Christmas hot new much have item, gimme a break.

Don't forget the EDU discount on the mini. ;) :)

I wanted to replace my mini with a nano until I had them both side by side (my mini and my sister-in-law's nano) and compared them in both functionality and aesthetics. It boils down to this:

The nano has a beautiful (if small and scratch prone) color screen and is definitely cooler than the mini. The mini is more scratch resistant, has more third party support, holds more songs for the money, has Firewire support, has noticeably longer battery life, can be used as a bootdisk, and looks better than the nano. It's not an easy decision, but he will definitely be happy either way.

....don't get pink.

Well there's no point to get Firewire support anyways cause Flash memory probably can't even write that fast.

I like Zeem's subtle way of saying don't purchase the pink.

I think that it's very true that the color screen will not be used so much as he will have it in is pocket most of the time.

I don't know - it's really up to him. I just wished they came out with a new iPod so it could satisfy EVERYTHING. He would get a full sized iPod if it were thinner he said.

On a different note,
Does anybody think that Apple should STOP selling the U2 iPod? Wasn't it a special edition or something or something that should be time-purchase limited? Cause theres nothing really special about it now. And I don't see a lot of people having 'em. I guess the red dot is deterring buyers.

My wife had her silver first gen 4Gb mini stolen out of her office at work.

She replaced it with a pink one with the idea that it would be less of a target. Although female, she doesn't own much in pink, except her iPod.

As others have mentioned, a pink mini can also be a converstation starter, so don't rule out pink, particularly if you find a good deal on one.

go flash

go nano,

for all the reasons mentioned.... and i'll re-iterate:

-flash is great... i know of too many broken mini hd stories
-why even bother about firewire... the nano needs to be recharged and this allows plenty of time to transfer music, on usb 2, or even usb 1
-less capacity... not a big problem if you can live with transfering music periodicaly, which is probably inevitable unless you get a big ipod
-and yes the mini is now obsolete (perhaps sadly so)

the conveniece of such a small player is tremendous, as i can testify from having a shuffle... and i must confess that i rarely even fill up its 'small' memory.

nano i'd say :)

Ditto.

With flash memory, it is slower than hard drives. Memory is also pricier with no real benefits.

The color screen on the nano is all for show. You can get by fine on the monotone screen of the mini. I think color screen is a useless feature. Who cares if you can see beautiful full color album art or photos for that matter?

As for the size, too thin and it's easy to break in half. There are tons of reports of problems with the nano. You can't hold the nano in your hand as comfortably as you can a mini or the regular size iPods. The small size means it easier to get lost.

And as for world clocks and a stopwatch, adding those useful features is about as stupid as adding radio fm or BT. Nobody is ever going to use the stopwatch feature while jogging, nor would they use the lyrics feature when they are bored riding in the backseat of a car.

All in all, the nano is a piece of crap. I agree with you 110% percent, Andy89.

Have the people saying mini is better actually seen nano and played with it?
If you out the two side by side the difference is enormous! Mini WAS a good player...

At the end of the day, if the mini is such a good and excellent product compared to the nano, why did Apple removed them and replaced them with the nano?

Flamebait!

:)

And maya, USB is perfectly bootable to the much larger nano market of PC users. The practical reason for going with USB is that the controller hardware is much smaller, because USB is considerably less complex than FW. There's not room for both, and in fact probably not room for even just Firewire. And again, there's the PC element (fewer overall computers with FW than USB 2.0).

The nano also seems to be much more responsive than the other iPods, with smaller gaps between tracks, better/smoother scrolling, and minimal power consumption. All in all, it's a winner and technically superior to the mini. The color screen is sort of useless, but without it, they couldn't have gotten away with dropping capacity back down to 4GB.

I have both a silver mini, and a white 4GB nano.
To me, the nano wins hands down.

It looks so modern and sleek compared to the mini, and the color display is just stunning on the tiny device. It makes it look almost like a joke that Apple offered monochrome displays until recently.

Don't get me wrong. I loved my mini.
But one look at my new nano made it clear that the mini is merely a legacy product now.
