http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/041-8356.20111012.SQRDT/iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw

How to install:

1. Locate and download an iOS 5 IPSW file from the web

2. Launch iTunes and Option-Click (Mac) or Shift-Click (PC) on the “Check for Update” button to restore the iPhone

3. Select the iOS 5 IPSW and proceed with its installation onto the iPhone

anyone else have problems with this link and 3GS install?
i've tried this file twice and now both times came up with the "3002" error.

I'm guessing from reading through that 15-page out of control thread about how people can't get their iphone to update and "bricking" their phone, this method is the way to go. I've looked online and there are many other places pointing to these same files as well. I have not seen any pointing to any other ios5 IPSW files. I'm confident that these are the exact same files that all those other folks in that other thread are freaking out about not getting through itunes. I have both IPSWs for my iphone and my ipad in a thumb drive in my pocket and I am about ready to go home.

p.s. One guy on the other thread said he downloaded the file that was mentioned in this thread and it worked like a charm. He didn't say anything about losing his apps/music/pics/etc or having to reload them. That's a good sign as well.

i followed these instructions and updated to ios 5 without any issues. before upgrading, i did a full backup on ios 4. then i did a complete restore to ios 5 rather than an incremental upgrade.

i always made sure to upgrade to the most recent itunes and lion.

i'm on 32gb verizon iphone 4.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I really hope in the future Apple would allow you to upgrade from a beta to the final release automatically!!!

md5 for iPad 1

Anyone happen to know the md5 for the iPad 1 ipsw?

I too would like the MD5's (more specifically for iPhone 4 GSM).

Or perhaps a question could be answered for me instead?

I have the GM and would like to know if there is a difference between the GM and the Public release.

The MD5 I have for the GM is:
8ac7ae6a7f6fadbd34ba9abacd15e2dc

**Edit**

I can confirm the MD5 for the public release is the same for the GM... To be clear for anyone scanning over this...

The MD5 and file of the iPhone 4 GSM is as follows...
MD5 (iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw) = 8ac7ae6a7f6fadbd34ba9abacd15e2dc

How do you do a complete restore/install vs incremental upgrade with this method? How do you choose between one or the other?

You don't. All installs are a complete erase and restore. Make sure your device is backed up or you will loose everything.

I download files for both my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 and both result in 3002 error. :(

I'm trying the iPhone through iTunes again as the download speed is now more reasonable. I really hope this is the last time I have to download a 700+ MB  iOS update (OTA deltas, please).

There's no reason to download the update over and over. The servers are being hammered right now which means there's nothing you can do about it. You'll just be wasting bandwidth for no reason.

Same here. How should I try again? I start iTunes and click update and it goes to backing up and the status bar never moves.

For anyone using one of those links and have a slow download rate, pause the download and resume it. I did this a few times and finally got a connection that is maxing out my connection.

The instructions are incorrect. you MUST copy the IPSW file to the iTunes software update folder or you will keep getting the 3002 error.

here's the proper file location for Win7
C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

as soon as you copy, then click the update button and you'll be off and running!

No offense to dhelsdon, but I would like to seek further clarification on the update vs fresh install question. Are these the EXACT files I would get if I went through the iTunes "Check for Updates" normally like everyone else? All I care about is that these files work exactly as if I got the files the regular way through iTunes.

He might be saying that it's technically a "fresh install" for the OS itself (vs a patch), but it may not mean the entire iDevice is wiped out (including apps/media/data/etc) either. But I'm no expert by any means.

Exactly the same file as if you were doing an update, or a restore.

If you place the file in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone software update/ (or something along those lines, I'm at work at the moment) you can then click on update in itunes, and it will use the file you put there.

I'm still getting the 3002 error. Update...I thought I still had to do the Shift-Click step. After following your instructions exactly, the update went fast. Much faster than the 8 hours estimate I was getting through iTunes. Thanks for the tip.

I tried the tip about placing the Ipsw files. I discovered the same sized file that iTunes had downloaded on prior attempts today. I deleted that and replaced with the downloaded Ipsw from the apple server. Same error.

So, I deleted the file. Restart pc and hard restart iPhone. Try again. This time it prompts to download the update since the file is missing. After the 10 minute download it again goes to backup my iPhone and it again hangs. I don't get it. How is the backup caused by apple's servers being slammed? I'm missing something here.
