I installed the ipsw file from my desktop the option click allows you to select the file from anywhere. I have always down that for all my major updates. My home connect slows to a crawl on major release days...

I do not have the links to the 4S that's why its not here...

This might be a dumb question...

I downloaded the GM iOS 5 release for my VZW iPhone 4, last week, after being posted to LifeHacker.

Is the GM, same as the release version? Someone told me they are different. The GM was the one supplied to developers. Could someone tell me the version number that was released yesterday so I can compare.

My version number is: 5.0 (9A334)

Thanks!

Option Click Restore not Update

Yes, this was my mistake. You have to restore (erase the phone and re-copy your data after the OS has been upgraded) and not merely update the phone. I believe update is an option if it is a small upgrade, for ex. iOS 5.1.

I used the link given above and the download is still working! It's more than halfway done and says it has 5 hours and 35 minutes remaining! Thanks for the link. I will post the results later.

OKAY, so my question is:

I am downloading the link shown for the iPad 2. Is that the same software that needs to be in iTunes so that I can then put iOS5 on my iPad2?

If so, I sure hope this works, because even though I'm on DSL (nothing faster is available where I live), I have gotten errors for TWO DAYS trying to download the update. It will say at the beginning that it estimates the time to download as 20 hours. This time it got about halfway done, said there were 7 hours remaining, and then the error message ("...stopped [error -3256]") comes up.

I sure hope it works, and I sure hope that I am downloading the right software for the right purpose.

Thanks,

V.

Confusing Post, sorry

I thought I was putting the Sunday Morning post below my original email. But it went above. I tried to edit, cut and paste it, but I couldn't scroll in the edit window. Sorry for the confusion!

Long-term IOS5 download saga nears its end (perhaps)

DATELINE SUNDAY AFTERNOON 1pm:

Okay so the download stopped several times BUT when I told it to start again, it started from where it left off rather than starting all over like it was doing in iTunes! So now it says it has completed 595 or 707 mb have been completed. It estimates 2 hours and 38 minutes remaining. It says the rate it is downloading is 12.1 kb per second. Good ol' DSL!

Thanks again for the help with giving us those links!

V.:):D

UPDATE SUNDAY LATE AFTERNOON:

Now it wants a FIRMWARE UPDATE before it will let me do anything with the SOFTWARE UPDATE (that I think I successfully downloaded finally). HELP! Where do I get the firmware?

I will NOT get discouraged, I will NOT get discouraged....

Okay, so it finished downloading using the direct link. I did the Option-click on Update in iTunes and it said I couldn't install because I did not have the right FIRMWARE. Now, I know from perusing this thread earlier that SOMEWHERE on here is a link to the firmware update. But I couldn't find it. I googled it and found one and am downloading it now in Safari. It says it has 9 hours and 27 minutes remaining.

By the time I get iOS 5 installed, iOS 6 will be out!!!

Question for successful updaters

i followed these instructions and updated to ios 5 without any issues. before upgrading, i did a full backup on ios 4. then i did a complete restore to ios 5 rather than an incremental upgrade.

i always made sure to upgrade to the most recent itunes and lion.

i'm on 32gb verizon iphone 4.

Did you have to install a FIRMWARE UPDATE prior to the iOS 5 update? Mine is asking me for that. I'm running Lion, trying to get iOS 5 on my MacBook Pro and my iPad2 (and iPad1 some day). I can't find the link for the firmware update now. I thought I found it, but it was an old update 3.2.1 or something.

HELP PLEASE?!
:mad::confused:

Did it make you update your firmware? I was only able to successfully download the ipsw file using the direct link, and I Option-Clicked on "Restore" in iTunes, and it said it couldn't install because my FIRMWARE wasn't up to date. When I run Software Update it says my software is up to date. I, too, am running Lion and trying to install on an iPad2.

I'm starting to LOSE IT!

Going on DAY THREE of trying to get iOS5 on my ipad2. I downloaded from the direct link after two days of failure during 19-20 hour download predictions. But when I try to bring that into iTunes (including putting it in the Users folder for mobile apps, it gives me this message:

Oh great. It went up in the cloud (my screen shot) and I don't know how to get it. Anyway it said the firmware was not compatible or something.

Would someone PLEASE give me a clue?!

I'm begging!

V

----------

And now it's downloading a 376.3 mb. iPhoto update that says it will take 7 hours!

I give up.
