I need USB 3.0

You don't "need" USB 3.0. You WANT USB 3.0. Need implies you can't do with out. You can do without because Apple put Thunderbolt on the 2011's which is actually a faster connection than USB 3.0. So no you don't "need" USB 3.0, but rather you want a cheaper alternative to Thunderbolt.

----------

Just a heads up, more mac minis have appeared in apple's refurbished inventory.

Now you can be notified when the refurbs come in via email....

Im looking to buy a mac mini soon and from the sounds of it all sources on the internet have been expecting a new one for end of July/August.

Maybe better to wait at this point? How much better is the next gen mac mini expected to be?

Expect it around October-November, maybe January-February.
The interval between major upgrades is roughly 470 days. That would make early November, but in practice updates come in October or January/February. It is too late now for a speed bump in-between-update.

And remember, the next Mini update is going to be very difficult for Apple. If they go quad-i7 with discrete graphics, they probably kill too many iMac/MacPro interest, and maybe even MacBook interest.
So I think the new Mini will be a dual core Ivy with HD4000 at a smaller footprint if Apple does not want to cannibalize other product lines, and probably the iFixit mod-score will go down below 3-4 again. With a dual core i7 Ivy, there is not much performance gain over the current models, only heat goes down significantly.
My guess:
January 2013
15x15x3 cm mini
Dual core Ivy i5-3360M with HD4000, i7-3520M BTO
4x USB3, 2x TB, mains, minijack ports

Price of $499 again or $599 with SSD instead of HD.

Silent hope (but not coming true)
Current case
i5 3360M or i7 3615QMbase model, i7 3820QM BTO
Nice Nvidia/Radeon GPU at 28nm with 512Mb GDDR 5
256MB SSD and room for a 2,5 inch HDD or second SSD easy accessible.

So for now, just try to get one of those 5.2's on sale now, they are perfect, and if you can get them at 649 like I did, you can always resell it for 699 when the new ones arrive :D

I just think January is too late for the uptade dont? October or november for christmas sales are the best way for apple I think.
But what you think about the graphic card? Do you really think is gonna be a 512mb? I hope they go for a 1gb...

I said I think HD4000 with shared memory. The hope thing is another story. I could write hope for 1Gb, but knowing Apple, they are always on the low side with RAM/HD/VRAM capacity.

January sounds late, but Mini's are mostly introduced off season. MB's and iMacs get primetime: WDC and Christmas sales, then when everything is silent again you have Mini's. They don't want to sell a sjitload of Mini's with Christmas. They want to sell a sjitload Retina iMacs first.

Darn so it looks like some of us might be waiting a while then. Perhaps its best to just get a refurb mac mini and call it a day. Cant wait till Jan/Feb but I could hold out the month of August & possibly September. Im usually not one to wait around for the new model to come out for anything as you just sit around waiting too much but if one is nearby then I try to wait. Sounds like the mini releases are erratic and the product cycle unpredictable.

I was planning on getting a base mac mini and then putting a ssd in it and some upgraded RAM to perhaps 12GB.

Anyhow, thanks for posting responses above^^^

Why should I buy Apple?

tomorrow is August. How long should I wait for a 2012 Mac mini ?

Apple is really stupid!

Nobody would buy that "old" Mac Mini with really old hardware inside.

I would need a computer for HD-Videos.
So,

Mac mini -> no way, very old hardware inside!
iMac -> old hardware, too. New Model coming soon(or not)
Mac Pro - old hardware. New Model coming soon(or not)

So, there is no way buying Apple this year -> I will buy a Windows PC with the best hardware of 2012 for the same price.

I own an old macbook pro 15" (Mid 2007) and didn't buy a new one because I want a 13" macbook pro with ant glare!

So, I don't buy Apple products for at least 3 years just because Apple does not have the right feature inside their products.

It might be a little too old, but it is still the BEST COMPUTER EVER MADE. I take a little old for granted then.

Oh My...

Quite the obnoxious post...

First of ail, what utter Mac fan-boy nonsense. How on earth do you know what he needs? If he has 3 or 4 USB3 drives or maybe a USB3 video capture device like the Black Magic Shuttle USB3 version (which will not work with USB2), then yes, he *needs* USB3.

Second, how rude and frankly insulting to be telling other posters what they do and do not need. Your post is bang out of order.

No. I am correct. Need and want are two different things. Look it up. Need implies you have no other alternative and can not live without. Even if he has 4 USB3 drives, they can still run on USB2.0 can they not? Therefore it is a WANT instead of need for USB3.0.

Again. Want vs Need. Maybe it is obnoxious, but to actually say you need something is a little ridiculous when discussing computers is it not? I mean theoretically anyone can "get by" with an old Core2duo, but we WANT faster computers (I'd even say most could get buy on G4 and G5 computers with the exception of software that no longer run on those ancient boxes). Further, the s/he gave no reason why he "Needed" USB3, instead he just made a statement. The only thing that even currently utilizes USB3.0 right now is storage which again can either be run at USB2.0 speeds OR you can use thunderbolt storage.

You really know how to hurt a man, don't you. :D I'm hoping for a "silent upgrade" in September, around the time the new iPhones arrive. Remember how Apple used to do it in the G4 days? All of a sudden you'd look at the specs page and the processors were faster? No announcement, nothing...

The reason I need USB 3.0 is because I am not going to buy a computer without it.It is a deal breaker for me. Also for the record I realize that I can buy a thunderbolt to PCI express and add a USB 3.0 card, but I don't want the clutter so yes I need USB 3.0 if I am going to buy a mini.

I do need it if I am going to buy it.

It's a want on your list. The computer would need to have it since you want it, but you do not "need" it. You have the ability to do anything you want to do with the Current Mini because of backwards compatibility of USB3 to USB2 and Thunderbolt (i.e. in context of food, you would not starve because you have hamburger), but you want USB3 (i.e. in context of food, you have hamburger, but you WANT steak).

Definition of Need: Circumstances in which something is necessary, or that require some course of action; necessity: "the need for food".

Definition of Want: Have a desire to possess or do (something); wish for.

But again under true definition of need, you do not "need" it.

Don't be pedantic. Nobody NEEDS a computer for survival, in the hunter-gatherer sense of the word. It is sufficient to say that he has requirements that USB3 meets that TB and USB2 do not, which can include a combination of performance and acceptable cost. That, in THIS context, means he "needs" USB3. End of story.
