The new Mac mini is already here, the company has listened to the complaints of the lack of the BlueRay, the internal PSU, USB 3. The have added some ports to the front since these days that is needed. On top of that they have gone back to the original looks...

Unfortunately they had to relabel it otherwise they would have too much egg on their face.

Meh, I'd rather have an Apple Mac Mini than some third party copy.

My 2 Cents...

It is "necessary" if I am going to buy it.

Don't waste your time attempting to engage paulrbeers. He isn't interested in anything but his adolescent verbal oneupmanship game. I knew a few guys like that in college, where the environment can bring it out in some people. Online forums where they can anonymously bait people are Heaven On Earth for someone like him... so try to avoid giving him the attention he craves.

Apple is primarily a marketing firm and not much more.

Apple does not make anything themselves, they only design some packaging and then let someone else make it. It is even possible that they are made in the same factory. In any case I do not want to be stuck with Apple's build in obsolescense where after three years OS X no longer is supported on the hardware that you've bought. (e.g. the 2009 Mac mini won't run Mountain Lion).

Yes, the ASrock is more expensive but it has a lot more features (that Apple is lacking) and I am not tied in with the Apple premium should I want a SSD. How many have damaged their Mac mini by putting another HDD/SSD in? To me that shows inferior design. How eco friendly is the Apple iPad or the new Macbook? How much is my time worth to have to replace my machine every 3 years and every year having to spend time learning another changed environment?

Don't be pedantic. Nobody NEEDS a computer for survival, in the hunter-gatherer sense of the word. It is sufficient to say that he has requirements that USB3 meets that TB and USB2 do not, which can include a combination of performance and acceptable cost. That, in THIS context, means he "needs" USB3. End of story.

100% correct.

@Paul: mate, you are being a complete tit.

tit 2 (tɪt)

— n
1. slang a female breast
2. a teat or nipple
3. derogatory a girl or young woman
4. slang a despicable or unpleasant person: often used as a term of address

I hope the 2012 Mac mini gets the retina treatment like the new macbook pro. That will make it the ultimate!

Thanks for the tip!:)

The 2009 Mac mini actually does run ML, but I get your point.:D

i hope they don't get rid of the Mac Mini, as it's the perfect size and price point for entry into Apple computers.

i know many friends of mine whose parents have made the switch to Apple by purchasing the Mac Mini and continuing to use their keyboard/mouse and monitor+speakers from their old Dell Dimension

the refurbs on their Apple Store website are especially a stellar deal

I think they will be out by the end of July. I want one also for a HTPC hooked up to my tv. The HD4000 is much better then the 3000. I would hold off.

unless you are playing games, you will not notice a difference in day to day tasks between the HD 3000 and HD 4000. included in the day to day tasks would also be watching and streaming HD video. most users will not notice a difference

I hate thread like this. If Apple don't update the mini by October I will blame you. All of you.

The Mini is Apple's 5th-wheel, because it doesn't enjoy the high-margins of the other product lines, so it's always going to be the red-headed step child. It could be an awesome machine if spec'd right, as such, let's hope Apple ups their game and gets the Ivy-Mini out soon before people start bailing and buy PC alternatives.

Why are people saying they think the mini might be dead? Looking at the update timeline, apple has released one every year (on average). I believe they usually come out a few months after the Macbooks are updated, so that's puts us in line for a sept/oct update.

USB 3.0 is a deal breaker for me. It should also come standard with at least 4GB of memory.

.... It should also come standard with at least 4GB of memory.

Why? For many of us that amount of ram is a deal breaker.

I know I am going to need 8gb or 16gb. I would prefer 8gb as a minimum .

They could weld the ram and make the machine fully non upgradeable.

What it comes with is what you get.

(I have modded and sold 300 minis since 2006 It would end my biggest ebay sales)

Well this oct we shall see what we shall see.

I cracked. No, I didn't buy a current Mini. I created another Hackintosh (after just recently selling my other one).

Damn it, Apple! I love the Mini and will likely still buy one when the new ones come out, but taking a Core 2 Duo Dell desktop that was given to me and turning it into a Hackintosh makes me want a small form factor Mac with expansion slots.

MAKE IT HAPPEN, APPLE!

unfortunately never going to happen though, is it?

The cheapest they sell in any series always seem to be underspecced by current standards. Sometimes I wonder why I do this. Then I click on links such as the one in this thread and shudder at the thought of having to use something other than a mac.

Because 4GB is the bare minimum for Lion/Mountain Lion. I bought a mini with 2GB and it was unusable.

well you then go to newegg and buy 8gb ram for 36 bucks on sale. turn the machine upside down and put in the 8gb and save money.

4gb ram while it will allow a 2011 mini to work is still a half a$$ed amount of ram. So if apple sells the machine with 4gb ram for 20 or 30 percent of the users it will be enough ram. The rest of us will need to go out and buy the 8gb or the 16gb ram. No way will apple sell the 4gb for as low as the 2gb so I would pay more 2x instead of one time.
I get that selling a machine with 2gb ram seems like cheap chiseling and cost the buyer 36 to 40 bucks to bring the machine up to snuff. But selling it with 4gb is worse you pay 20 bucks more to apple and pay the same 36 to 40 bucks for the 8gb ram.

Of course you could be a lite user and never need to upgrade from the 4gb.

when you purchased your machine did you upgrade to 4gb or to 8gb ram? If you upgraded to 4gb ram I could see that you would be biased for a 4gb machine. Especially if 4gb is enough for your needs.

How much do you want to bet that the new mini won't work well with 4gb and want at least 8gb ram? Every mini every made since 2006 wanted more ram the the model it replaced.

Why do you say that? The entry level Macbook Air went from 2GB to 4GB without any price increase. Apple's history has been to bump specs and leave the price the same.

It's 2012. I really don't think Apple can ship a computer with only 2GB of ram in this day and age. If there is a 2012 Mac Mini, I fully expect the base model to come with 4GB ram, 2.5 Ivy Bridge, USB 3, and 500gb standard hard drive.

Why would RAM be the deal breaker? When it's the most easily replaceable thing to upgrade, and extremely cheap....

I don't think that anybody really cares about BD, internal PSU (Mac Mini already has this....), USB3 will come with the upgrades, as will probably dual TB ports instead of 1xTB + 1xHDMI. FireWire will go, and potentially Ethernet too.

I have the 2011 Mac Mini, 16GB RAM (dual monitors) as a stand in machine for when I can afford something more powerful (it's way to underpowered for me), but it's a pretty good machine nevertheless.

Well, finally gave in and ordered a 2.5Ghz mini.

Refresh cycle was never a huge problem anyway as I rely on my BTO maxed out 2011 iMac for proper work, the mini is destined to be a HTPC/media downloading work horse, but something I can also use day to day if the iMac is busy.

Also ordered 8gig of ram and a Samsung 830, only 128GB though, I'm rather OCD with disk space, never go over 60-70GB on any of the main drives I own so should suit me fine :)

Looking forward to opening it up :D
