Thanks paulrbeers,
Now I have a user name that starts with every letter in my ignore list!
Thanks for reminding me; I've been intending to add him to my ignore list.

I am an Apple user since one of the first few hundred Apple IIs in 1978.
Epiphany: I look today at my needs (eSATA or USB3, is this cutting edge???) and I see that Apple has an agenda that is not consistent with my needs. I never noticed that before, my bad.
B'bye.
I fear that if this thing doesn't drop in the next six weeks I may have to cave and buy a 2011 model.
Resale value on macs is good. At least 1 to 2 years or gens behind. So cave now and don't wait. And then resell it when the new one comes out.
I know. I'm saying I don't care any more, too late for me (at least for the current purchase).huh? all i was saying was that i wish i knew when the next mac mini was coming... thats all.
Sadly it's a sign of the times. When Apple was a struggling company with the very much mocked single button mouse they were grateful for all the custom they could get. They still had their fanboy base but they actually had to deliver competitive products to in order to thrive. I remember the late 80's/early 90's all too well.
Nowadays their reputation, which seems pretty much exclusively iPhone based, makes them so much money that they can do what they want. You read these forums and you see such a loyal user base base that are willing to part their money for the latest product. It sad that Apple has so much secrecy. I've been holding on for an iMac and indeed a Mac Mini but without the promise or even suggestion of a release date what are we to do... the sad fact is that people will gladly spend their money regardless. I fear that with the current competition, unless Apple steps up it's game and actually acknowledges it's user base it will go the same way as Nokia did. From market leader to obsolete. I couldn't care less what their release cycles are but to not inform the public of their marketing strategy is arrogant in the least.
I used to manage the IT infrastructure of a global bank for the north west of england. I'm my twilight years i've leaned towards hardware that 'just works'. And that's where Apple excels. It doesn't break because you can't fiddle with it. There's a lot to be said for denying user access... It's such a great strategy - all Apple products work with each other - they are idiot proof. Getting an Apple to work with anything else is another story... before you know it your one iPhone has turned into a network of iMacs, Mini's, Airports... It' just works....
The sad thing is that people are still buying the old tech - refusing to leave the brand. You only have to peruse the Mac Pro forums to see that. The success of the iPhone has killed their other hardware. They now make so much money that they don't seem to care. Still like the rest I'll hold out... after all we don't really need it... it's just a want... I just wish they would say ' this is our road map for the next three years '. that leads to informed choice, respect and a desire to wait for upcoming releases. Currently we know nothing and as sure as I am that they will update their hardware, they could easily not and still turn a massive profit... It's sad.
I just hope they don't do a Nokia...

Not to mention possible usb 3.0
Great post evilpaddy. I think your post really summarizes what a lot of people are thinking. Now if only Apple would read your post.
Ahhh I see. You know I haven't thought about getting a Windows machine in a long time. 06 was probably the last time I even considered getting a windows machine for my personal so use. Since then its been all mac but boy shafting us on even the basic stuff like usb 3.0 is making me think twice right now.
I just love how the mac's work without issue which is why im holding on right now but I feel like if I buy the current mac mini im getting duped of my money for old tech that is far exceeded by windows machines for the same amount of money.
i guess with no inkling of knowing when the next one is coming I either give in and just get the current mac mini or aftrer 6 years go back to windows![]()
I agree with all of this, but I think you guys are really overplaying the "Macs just work" card.
I have been a Windows user since the 90's and it's been a pile of junk for most of the time. But you know what? Windows 7 is not bad. If they could just fix the incessant need for endless updates, they would be on to a winner.
I have been using a Mac now for perhaps 6 months. I really like it. Overall, I prefer it to Windows, just. Certain things are nice, other aspects suck. But overall it shades it.
But as to "it just works", does it just work any better than W7? Emphatically not. W7 has been every bit as reliable, arguably more so. Neither OS has crashed on me, ever. Have I had issues with OS X? Yes, I have.
"Macs just work" is fanboyism, nothing more, nothing less. I will stick with OS X so long as it's the better environment and so long as the Apple hardware price premium and performance lag is not so great as to push me away. Right now it's borderline as to whether I will stick with Mac. This lack of USB3 and reasonably priced Thunderbolt devices is a real turn off. You are faced with paying a fortune for a TB device because no USB3 exists. This situation really sucks and Apple should be hurry to remedy that, with either new USB3 capable Mac, cheap Thunderbolt to USB3 hubs or by helping to bring down TB peripheral costs.
The fact they are doing none of these things smacks to me of arrogance and not really giving a ***** about its customers.
Which, come to think of it, is probably true. I don't really think they do give a s*it about its desktop customers to be honest.
In the short term, they will probably get away with it because there are enough fanboys around who will put up with any old crap. But if they carry on ignoring the desktop, the shine will start to wear off and we will see more and more disenchanted users and negative reviews. And slowly but surely Apple will lose it's crown.
How silly it would be to let this happen.
I hope they don't drop the HDMI port for a second TB port!
I intend to connect it up to my main HDTV using HDMI, so 1 TB port is more then fine for me!
All it takes is a mini-display port to hdmi adapter (about 5 bucks from monoprice.com) to use HDMI with a Thunderbolt port. I do it every day at my house (two monitors hooked via HDMI and yes audio is passed). I hope they would drop the HDMI for a more universal port (i.e a 2nd thunderbolt that can either do data, video or both!).
The talk on this thread about Apple's silence betraying their arrogance . . . well, I can't say this is the case. But it definitely hurts their image in our eyes.
I think to another top-of-their-game company, Blizzard. They announce that they're working on Starcraft II, and that "It'll be done when it's done", same with Diablo III. Everyone gets impatient, whines, gnashes their teeth . . . but they know that their beloved company is working hard on the next version of their baby. An exact date is not revealed, but the fact that it's going to happen is very comforting to everyone.
Apple. Can't wait for the new iMacs! . . . Wow, iMac's are kind of late this year, no? . . . Hey, are they even building new iMacs, or not? . . . Apple doesn't believe in the desktop anymore! . . . Another iPhone part ?!? [sounds of pitchforks and torches being grabbed by angry mob] . . .
Don't tell us the specifics. Keep your secrets for our sweet surprises. Keep your secrets to slow down the copycats. But for God's sake, why don't you flat out say "We're currently in the later stages of development for the next generation of our desktop line of computers, including the Mini, the iMac, and the Mac Pro, packed with new and powerful features. They'll be done when they're done!"
Yeah, but I would say that a HDMI would be used more than an additional thunderbolt port. Look at the rMBP, that has two thunderbolts and a HDMI- dispensing on the Ethernet and FireWire. I think the ability of HDMI to connect easily to monitors/Tvs without faffing around with stupid adaptors makes it undespensible.
I agree. I don't want to have to faff about with adapters etc.
Since I last posted in this thread my need for a new computer will expedite 10 fold tomorrow when I sell my current computer
I really wish there was some inkling of of information when the next mac mini is coming so I know to wait or not. Might have to just get the current mac mini and live with it.
the rumour of a better graphics card on the base mac mini and ivy bridge is really intriguing and makes me want to wait. Not to mention possible usb 3.0. I just wish i knew how long I would have to wait and the specs. Maybe Ill wait till' the September 12 event and perhaps magically they will announce the mac mini that day! (wishful thinking, lol).
