for hours even the 11in pro is too heavy... but I am comfortable with the 300g of the mini...
But I rarely read for hours in a row... If I am sitting I use a stand, it's more when I am standing that I hold it with 1 hand. And that is more like 30 minutes max
I have the iPad 2 tri-fond cover and man that thing is not stable... Apple improved things later on, but the iPad 2 angle was too steep and it falls all the time...
for reading (you ar talking books right?) why wouldn't you use an ereader like a Kindle? OK, ill admit the UI is horrible, horrible, so bad it makes terrible look good, but simplicity and lightness and the screen is actually better for reading books, less eyestrain.

Speaking of my kindle, I am so tired of tap, tap, tap, did that register yet? and finding a book you have already read in Kindle unlimited. come on Amazon, you can't tell me I've already read a book until after I download it, basics. I really can't wait until they open the kindle App Store to third parties though, tired of paying the "amazon tax". Damn monopolies. Amazon absolutely has a monopoly on Kindle books. THIS MUST END! Let us form a coalition and make stupid movies and sue them for anti-trust!

Nope, a hair thicker and speck of dust heavier. Not an issue for me.

No, I'm more bothered the 11" version didn't get it. I'll take a thicker 11" with XDR over a thinner one without it any day.

Because many of the things that I read are in PDF and are not resizeable, so I need a larger screen. If they are I use the mini. I generally don't read novels or fiction. I read either to educate myself or for my work (much of what I read is either economics and finance, which is what I teach, or about technology, which is what I enjoy reading about, even if it's not my work)
PS Just to make an example, one of the thing I spend most time reading is my daily financial newspaper. I have to zoom even with the 12.9 but much less than on smaller devices. On the mini it's unusable...

It's half a mm. No human can tell the difference. The only thing that can tell are old 12.9 cases, which are engineered down to the mm.

0.5mm is the same thickness of about 5 sheets of regular paper and about 10% thicker than the outgoing model. It may be tiny (and I agree immaterial for most purposes), but I think it will be perceptible.

It’s half the thickness of a dime (dimes are 1mm).

Personally, I don’t know why anyone would be trying to hold a 12.9” iPad Pro with one hand to begin with. I can see why some are worried about the weight increase, though. However, I doubt it’s going to matter all that much. I will gladly take the weight increase for the expectedly gorgeous XDR display.

Also, if you are having trouble holding it, have you considered using a case that doubles as a stand or even keeping it on the Magic Keyboard? I kept my Air 4 on the Magic Keyboard at all times and I loved it. I plan to do the same with the 2021 12.9” iPad Pro too.

I prefer my 12.9 Pro over my latest gen Kindle Oasis for reading books. I generally use it a couple of hours/day for reading. I prefer the larger screen and display of the iPP. I also owned the original Kindle and the Paperwhite.

I have a 10.5 and have a back snap cover on it and apple Smart Cover, and this makes it weigh more than the 12.9. If I take the Smart Cover off, it feels quite light, and the iPad with snap case weighs 1.45lb.

I’m coming from a 2020 12.9 iPP to the 2021 12.9 iPP Cellular and I must say that throughout my usage today and side by side comparison, the weight and thickness is definitely bothering me. The previous model felt like the perfect weight and like a thin slab of a screen. While 0.5 mm doesn’t sound like much, it definitely feels chunkier to hold in the hand - more like you’re holding a device than a slab of glass. Likewise, the weight is something I can’t stop thinking about while using it in tablet mode.

From a usage perspective, I tend to have the iPad docked to my magic keyboard, but throughout the day i’ll detach and use as a table to browse the web, watch videos, etc and these are the instances where I notice the weight and thickness every time.

With all the complaints about the screen I’m hearing from everybody on the forums, i’m a little surprised the added girth hasn’t been brought up more. I appreciate the better screen, faster processor, etc. but i’m a little salty about upgrading at this point.

I'm coming from the 2018 model, the thickness isn't noticeable to me, but the weight is noticeable for sure. Doesn't bother me, but can see how it would. Was actually the first thing I noticed, how much heavier it felt. Still love mine though.

I could hand anyone an brand new iPad Pro 12.9 inch (not turned on) and tell them it’s the 2021 and ask them what they think. They would say that they can feel the thickness and weight and indicate how much it bothers or doesn’t bother them.

Then, I’d tell them that it’s the 2020 version and they’d say, yeah, they thought it felt thinner than they expected.

Confirmation bias IS a thing.
