I'm an admitted tech junkie and have purchased most iPhones with the exception of the 7. This year was the first time I actually paid for my phone (11 Pro Max) with no financing. It's kind of nice to control my own destiny with regards to upgrading. The upcoming 2020 phone sounds very nice but one thing I've learned is that my experience stays pretty much the same with every new iPhone. After a few days or weeks the shine wears off and it's still an iPhone. For my use case there's not much difference. I'm tired of buying new cases and screen protectors every year or so. I'm hanging onto this phone for a bit.

I agree with this. I used to upgrade every year and stopped with the X, and probably won’t now either since I have the 11 Pro. The process does become cumbersome having to trade my IPhone in, cancel applecare, buying new cases and screen protectors when at the end of the day, I mainly call, text, take pics and browse social media.

I usually switch out my iPhones every couple of years.

I've decided to keep my iPhoneX for a 3rd year as tempting as the camera is on the iPhone 11 Pro.

iPhone 5C - 2014 (xmas gift)
iPhone SE - 2016
iPhone 7 - 2019 (picked up a used phone when SE got run over by a car)
iPhone 11 - today

I don't want to upgrade unless I have to, absolutely. my 5C was only 8gb so I was suffering most of the time when I went to concerts or had long road trips. I'm very excited for my 11 which delivers today.

iPhone 7 since the end of 2016, before that I used various POS android phones. I still really like the classic shape, Touch ID, rectangular screen shape, size.... so I was considering doing the rumored se2 update for the improved camera. I do definitely want to take better pictures in the dark. The rest I don’t care about.

My life priorities changed. I now spend less time appraising technology and, in turn, less time buying it. So right now, I am completely happy with my trusty iPhone 8 Plus. But then of course that could all change overnight with one swish TV commercial. It all hangs in the balance!

Still on the iPhone 7 myself. Looking forward to the SE2/9 refresh. My battery's gotten quite bad and I'd love to have eSIM/dual SIM support.

As many years as the iPhone will function. The average so far, just under three years. Mostly battery and damage ends useage. The good news, Apple makes products that have TCO (Total Cost Of Ownership) that performs well if one‘s needs are accommodating beyond two years. Works for me.👏

We had a 4, a 5 and now a 6s:

They'll have to take it from my cold dead hands!! :D

If you update yearly you're probably a spoiled brat.
I've had each and every iPhone. Why stop now?

Everyday I wake up I want the 11 Pro Max. But then I revisit the fact I paid for my Xs Max upfront.

Like many others have said, it's such a hassle getting a new phone. Although, it is nice being priced in by fully owning the device.

Still not ready to give up 3D Touch though. Too, I'm a lil concerned about the reports that 11 Pro Max screen runs warmer.

I honestly don't have a reason to upgrade other than wanting the latest and greatest. SMH @ myself. Where does the madness end. I'm fairly certain I won't upgrade, but I wish I could get rid of this nagging feeling about wanting to upgrade.

In a fantasy world I would like to use my Xs Max until it stops being supported. Someone give me some encouragement to stay strong lol...

Stay strong! Lol. I upgraded from the X and missed it at first, but I love the 11 Pro and the battery life. It’s hard, especially since the 11 Pro/11 variant was actually a well made phone. No “gates” like in the past. I’m probably gonna be the this way when the 12 comes out but I gotta stop myself lol

I’m in the same situation (XS Max, would like to upgrade but won’t, should use my XS Max till it drops but probably won’t). Here’s your encouragement: A lot of people have said that they feel no difference on a daily basis from our phone to the 11 Pro series. Obviously, some people need the larger battery or the camera, so they feel that difference, but as far as what they do on the phone and how it feels for daily operations, they feel no difference.

So, you’d basically be paying a premium to get almost no change in experience. Your XS Max will depreciate less over time, so you’ll save more money and it should be more of an upgrade and an improving of experience the longer you wait.

I want to upgrade for that battery life and the brighter screen, but then I remember that I rarely need either of those. My battery life lasts me long enough the very large majority of the time, and if it doesn’t, I’m always able to charge it. The brighter screen would be nice, but it’s not that often my phone is in very bright direct sunlight either. Then on top of it all, I see how much money I will have spent ($650) just to use the XS Max for 1.25 years if I sell it now.

All around, not worth it.

The 'wanting latest and greatest' got to be more a problem once I filled most of my drawers up with unused phones and thought about how rich I'd be if I added up all the money I paid for those phones together. Also, all those phones still function so in a way I have enough variety to last a lifetime. Nothing really game changing is really happening with Smartphones these days aside camera and more RAM. The day they start being holographic or something that might become more difficult.

I’m perfectly happy with my iPhone Xs. Me and my wife aren’t upgrading our phones till we have a kid in the later future (she is perfectly happy with her iPhone 8 Plus).

As long as mine works as I want it to, I don’t care about what’s new. For example, I am happy that I got an iPhone Xʀ 4 months ago, because my iPhone 6s on iOS 9 was hit by Apple’s pathetic iOS 9 server glitch, and I was forced to update it to iOS 13. I gave that phone to a family member, but battery life is absolutely pathetic now.
I was happy with my 9.7 iPad Pro on iOS 9 until... guess what? Apple’s pathetic iOS 9 server bug. I’m still using it, but I really want to get any other iPad on an original iOS version. Battery life was severely crippled by iOS 12.
If that bug weren’t present and I were still using my 6s, I couldn’t care less about the iPhone 43.

I tired so hard to put myself on a 2 year upgrade plan, but I upgraded my X to the XS Max in March of this year, after having my X for 18 months (my daughter uses the X now). I love my phone but the urge to upgrade to the 11 Pro Max is nagging at me everyday. I upgrade yearly so the urge to upgrade is strong right now. At first I was 100% positive I wasn’t upgrading until September 2020, but I want to buy myself a late Birthday/Christmas gift and only want the 11 Pro Max. I just bought 2 cases for my AirPods 2, so hopefully that helps me not to upgrade my phone.

I have the 11 Pro. I always say I'm not going to upgrade but eventually I do lol

I guess it just depends what Apple comes out with next year.
