I hate it too, and apple really should have painted it chrome to match, although it you wanted too you could probably take it off and try to find a paint to match and paint it

though Apple takes advantage of form, form still follows function. In other words, the black plastic is the best solution their engineers have at the moment to access the series of tubes via 3G. Not to worry.

a scar on an otherwise beautiful design

It bothers me... a scar on an otherwise beautiful design. You will feel the difference too when rotating, as the plastic sticks out a tad as well.

I, like many Apple customers, am a visual person and form weighs into my purchase decisions.

But in the end function won the day and I ordered the black scar model.

BTW folks, don't treat the OP like a moron. We all know *why* the plastic is there. The question wasn't about why, but if the *look* bothered you. Apple could have chosen to blend the color.

Here's the cold hard truth. Many people complain that they want something better than others, they want to show that their iPad is better than the rest and that they can afford more, so the plastic strip is to tell people that you plonnked down more $ for a 3G version!

My 3G will be in a case, so it doesn't matter. For those that it really bothers... would you rather they chose orange instead of black?

Well personally WiFi is good enough for me on an iPad.

When I'm out and about, I would be using an iPhone, that's what it's for.

I think it looks poor, but it won't deter me from holding out or the 3G model. However, I think that they could have made the strip from a silverish colour as close to the original colour as possible -it's a no-brainer.

I just thought of an awesome accessory to capitalize on:

A thin aluminum plate that covers the black part, making it the same color as the rest of the device.
There will be fine print on the order page stating that it may interfere with 3G reception. This notice will be printed next to the button labeled [Place Order ALL SALES FINAL]

Mwahahaha!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I undersand why they have to have it but why black and not say white or matt silver plastic, is there a tecnical reason?

I know, I know, it's incredibly superficial. But on such a clean Apple design it's such a sore thumb. Argh. :(

I want the 3G, I'm almost positive. If I said no to the 3G, and lost out on internet everywhere if I needed it once, for just $130, due to a simple black strip I'd feel like a fool…

But… argh. What do you guys think of the black bar? Help. :(

If you would "feel like a fool" when then you must be one. I will be very happy to have my 3G with the black strip. Just think of it as a status symbol! You must be only getting the WiFi unit and are already jealous! LOL!

YES I can see from the side view how much that horrible black strip sticks out! I will not hardly be able to hold onto the ugly device! LOL!

IF you want to HATE something. HATE forums like this where if you just accidently allow your cursor to float over the advertisement, it explodes into a larger window. Now that is something to hate!

I'm slowly getting over it, and I'll still buy the 3G, but with all the unboxing videos showing the clean design I'm sad. :(

--OT--
Depends which side of the pond you're on. Obviously the British way makes more sense taken logically, but its a bit more complicated than that (google it, quite interesting).
Is this a joke? "Couldn't care less" is the only way this is correct. Saying anything else just comes across as stupid.

This bothers you? really?:D

If anything, it's the detail at the back bottom that compromises the aesthetics.
