In my mind you’d get more people interested in a phone where the back was not so “sticking out” due to the cameras, but then have a better FaceTime camera for FaceTime, Instagram, tik toks, snapchats and all the other things most people use to shoot videos and post them on these platforms.

Is it just me, or do others also feel this way?

That's the base model iPhone 14.
Those specs are very capable for social media.

You can look at a photo with a better screen, later, such as your MBP or even a future screen 30 years from now.
Not everyone has a MBP but I get the point. Most people view photos on the phone screen so a terrible screen makes it look like a terrible photo.
This is how far we take it: Put the best cameras in as many phones and hands as possible.
It's funny you should say this because I just replied to a thread where people are talking about reasons for returning their 14 Pro/ Pro Max and one big complaint is the camera bump. The thing is there's no way around larger lenses if you want a better camera. At least with current tech. Some people would trade worse pictures for a smaller camera bump. Also think that people who buy the Pro models want the best everything but you have a lot of people who buy the regular iPhone that rarely take pictures. They would be very unhappy with some huge camera bump.

I think it's going to end up being you'll have the regular iPhone with basic camera functions, the Pro with more advanced camera and the Ultra with a crazy looking camera that is for enthusiasts. This way you have a choice to decide what you want. Do you want just your basic iPhone with a camera or some Ultra model with a silly camera bump from hell 🤣

For most people the phone is the only camera they use. Having it the best quality possible makes sense. And it also seems to be one of the easier features of a phone to constantly improve that can still have an impact.

Not a big fan of the big bumps, but still prefer it to the whole phone getting fatter.

The biggest reason I do the iPhone Upgrade Program is for camera improvements. When I look back at travel photos over the years, the difference in quality as you go back is obvious. I want the best photos my iPhone can give me.

I never understand the camera bump concern. It doesn’t make it difficult to put in your pocket. Maybe some want the iPhone to be a work of art. I’d rather my photos look good rather than having an iPhone that lays flat.

I generally get a case that makes the phone lay flat… or if I have a case that does t lay flat on the back, then I have a case with a ridge around the front edge and lay it face down.

That being said, I feel like most people don’t understand the physics of photography and the need for larger protrusions when it comes to lenses… at least with tech how it is. Also, outside of tech forums, I don’t hear a whole lot of people complain about them. They simply find a phone that fits their needs and don’t nitpick every detail of their phone. The general consumer is still very naive about mobile technology and tend to go with what they think looks best, what they’re used to, or what their friends and family tell them to.

I think 80% of people mostly use the front camera and I like that they finally upgraded it, but I hope with time they find a way to make it equally great as the back cameras.

Right! probably what will keep happening. I do not care about the bump at all. give me ALL the lens! The periscope will be interesting.

It's always about the kids isn't it? :D

I don't say that mockingly, just ribbing you.

My own kids (18 and 14) are intensely camera shy. They got that from us (my wife and I), two introvert loners who for their own reasons do whatever it takes to avoid having our pictures taken. We have captured the major moments of our kids lives and they've had to suck it up and stand there each time - grudgingly, silently being belligerent throughout the whole ordeal.

Yeah, my family hates getting our pictures taken. I suppose that makes us not pretty average. :)
I don't care about my picture but I won't totally avoid it like my dad. And I think the best kid pics are impromptu ones where they're doing something cool or funny. When my daughter was very young she was putting her arms in the air by the wall casting a shadow, and that is one of my favorite pics of her

The camera is the one feature I care about most in a phone. If Apple started putting in smaller lenses and compromising on form over function for a flat back, they'd be shredded by consumers, journalists and youtubers. And rightfully so. The camera is a huge selling feature whether the OP understands it or not.

The camera bump is form following function. The only alternative is to make lenses interchangeable. I’m not sure this is the right path for a pocketable device. Project Ara was intended to explore that, but it never took off.

Unless some revolutionary image or reality capturing tech gets invented, this is how we capture the world for now.
