Where are these iPhone numbers? I thought apple didn't separate model sales. I've heard the 4s is outselling the 5 as well.

For Apple's iPhone, it doesn't matter when is next, but rather what is next. If Apple can't continue to woo the masses, the iPhone will continue to decline, with each release declining at a faster rate.

It is extrapolated from carrier and retail reports. I've never seen a report that suggested iPhone 5 sold less than half of iPhone 4 AND 4S.

Your definition of decline is not correct. iPhone's growth is slowing, yes. But consumers still flock to it and sales continue their yoy growth. The smartphone market has matured quickly and I'm sure Samsung will realize the very same thing soon enough. We haven't even seen Samsung achieve the same numbers in their flagship line and we are already crying doom.

Outside of iOS 7, I already think that if they can build a less fragile iPhone 5 they've already built a winner in the hardware department.

If they need to wait this long to get iOS 7 perfect and hit a home run, it's worth it

if they screw up iOS 7, they're gonna experience major brand erosion

OP you make it sound like my 4s is going to automatically implode if I don't replace it immediately.

If you can't wait. Go and close the door behind you. If you can just use your phone as normal.

They survived the GS2 (4S was best selling iPhone ever) and shipped 5m iPhone 5s in 72hrs despite the fact that the GS3 came out months earlier.

I think they'll be just fine. GS4 regardless.

They'll be fine regardless. The GS4 vs the GS2 though is a huge step up in terms of software, hardware and brand recognition compared to the 4S and the 5 though.

The short answer is No in my opinion.

The present iPhone has not really been pushed anywhere near its full capabilities and already demand is coming. Lets remember the technical spec of the iPhone 5 looks inferior when compared to other flagship devices yet performs brilliantly due to an OS demanding very little from its hardware.

I wouldn't say they've waiting too long.

I dont personally think the next iphone/ipad/ipod hardware is going to be as important as IOS7, they can bang on about "its xx % this or that compared to the previous model" but if im looking at the same OS and the "wow" factor isnt there then chances are i won't buy it*

*the only exception i may make is an ipad mini with retina :D

Posting an iPhone related thread in a non-iPhone related forum is like asking for (the damn old) argument.

I'd rather see longer product cycles if it means a truly improved product in both hardware and software. The iPad 4 was released way too quickly, leaving a sour feeling for all iPad 3 owners and giving no momentum to Apple since it was just a new connector and improved specs.

Android phone manufacturers release way too many products far too often. I'd rather see them make something that is just right in a few different sizes and price points instead of pushing tons of completely different models out. For example HTC should have just the One and it's upcoming smaller version but instead they have something like 3-5 phones that are not as polished as the One but very similar in size and specs.

Sydney, Australia.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that global channel sales of its GALAXY S4, a life companion for a richer, fuller, simpler life, has surpassed 10 million units sold in less than one month after its commercial debut. Launched globally on April 27, the phone is estimated to be selling at a rate of four units per second.

Samsung's public relations department is now a member of Macrumors?

Welcome!

Why is this in the nerdy phone section? I'm talking to the OP, not you Samsung PR.

Generally Android manufactures and Apple alike release their updated flagships on a yearly cycle. The difference is Android phone manufactures produce other phones as well, budget phones, windows phones, feature and dumb phones, etc.

It looks a bit confusing but if you are comparing the iPhone to another flagship its usually (not always) also on a yearly cycle.

-----------

Personally I don't think Apple should release their next iPhone just yet. Technically the iPhones never been the most tech or feature packed smartphone just a good compromise of everything. It's only recently (in my opinion) that Android phone manufactures have made phones without a huge glaring issue. It's not that the iphone is falling behind, just now we have some decent phones.

I have a list of issues I hate about the iPhone but since iOS 4 those issues are slowly being addressed. Just like Android has a list of things I hated which is also slowly getting smaller.

I hope you realize that making a few more models is not a difficult thing. These models are just variation of existing models. The reason why apple didn't do it is probably they fear cheaper models will cannibalize their current phones.

Oh thank God, another "Apple is doomed" thread here in the Alternatiives to iOS and iOS Devices section..... and this time, the cause of their doom is the time between releases...

Well, I guess it generates traffic, like a previous poster alluded to, the arguments are just the Same old *ahem* "stuff", different thread (SOSDT)

To many people get caught up in who sells the most phones, it doesn't make their phones better, it just makes faceless shareholders and board members richer, I won't champion these people, they mean nothing to me as I do them.

FFS, "my phone sold more than yours". Great argument........Not.

Lol.. buahahaha best response of the day! Awesome! :D

agreed, samsung is releasing too many phones and they are also heavily marketing their phones. the solution is apple should release two iphones each year,(one should be a major upgrade and one should be small upgrade iphonexS) if the next iphone is going to be a small upgrade then apple should release it now.

Apple just released the iPhone 5 and I think it's tooooo soon if they release a new one. right? :) Let's see what the iPhone52 has to offer.

I wouldn't say they JUST released the iPhone 5. However it's a fair assumption that the next iPhone will just be an S upgrade anyways, so at this point, it's all about the software.

We got the last iPhone 8 months ago, and we will probably get the next one this fall. I'd say the timing is quite typical.

The release of the excellent S4 and HTC One does not mean Apple needs to rush the iPhone 5S to the market and have the phone suffer as a result. Quite the opposite. They need to take their time to develop an iPhone that is more than just expected hardware upgrades.

Apple has been at their best when they focused on making a good product, and not focus on market share and the competition. Hopefully they don't lose sight of that, but if the rumors are true about the cheap iPhone, then Apple could be quite a different company than it was under Jobs.

They should wait longer in my opinion and make a "revolutionary" product every time. Not just slight upgrades in processor, screen and camera. Do something that will make everyone re think how they use their phone and make all other manufacturers panic.

What about all the people who complain about the length of time between product releases? It's one or the other (or a demand for 'revolutionary' products every three months). Apple is definitely listening to these opinions, so if you could clarify, that would help them out a lot.

I would agree if we were talking about the iPhone 6.

If the new OS is basically just the jailbroken "Flat Icons" theme & the hardware is a rehash of the 5 with a better camera Apple may truly be in trouble. Will they crash and burn because of it? No. But they will be doing themselves a BIG disservice.

Agreed. They won't go down in flames immediately but they could very well loose their stronghold of the smartphone market. For good.

With exception of 4S. All iPhones have been released within 11-12months of each other.

The 4S would have been release Sept 2011 one month earlier if u for Siri delays in software.

Next iPhone will be released within 11-12 months of iPhone 5.

What's the big deal?

The galaxy series all released within 11-12 months with exception of the S3 which took 13 months in between S2 and S3.
