It has caused me to change my mind to one of the lower spec ones. I'll give that then to my college bound daughter in twelve months and buy a top of the range iPad2. Without doubt it will be far superior. Extra ram allowing imovies, probably 128 gig capacity, camera and the hi res screen on new iPhone, maybe even the possibility of a cut down version of Illy and Photoshop, which would really interest me

I doubt it will have the iPad screen. Plenty of reasons why. Most of them spelled out in this forum.

I am still planning to buy the current Gen as many people have said it is pretty fast and have not had many problems. So for now I will be happy with the 256mb

Why would it?

Unlike windows developer where they do know the spec of the machine the end user is using, the developer of ghe iPad do, they have a fixed spec machine to design for and software are tailored for it.

Even if it has 20G of ram it wont make any difference, unless you are the developer.

I never knew how much RAM it has.

But after reading the article about the iPhone having 512MB, I don't care.

The iPad is fantastic regardless of the RAM.

If you don't like the specs then don't buy. Simples.

Whilst we will enjoy our ipads without worrying about specs.

256mb is like a bridge, you have to choose wether you want to 'get over it' or not.

256 or 512 ram doesn't matter to me. My iPad is fast for what i use it for ( and i don't see how it could be any faster )

Watching movies
Streaming movies
Sending Emails
Surfing the internet
Storing photos
taking notes
setting appts on iCal

Yeah the iPhone SPEC wise is faster BUT will you use it? Some will, Some wont...The 512 is to accommodate its other features ( video, camera, etc )

For instance...I never watch movies on my iPhone, The small screen makes it really pointless unless i am EXTREMELY bored...

I dont lay in bed or sit on the can and surf the net on my iPhone because once again, the screen is small and its not that enjoyable. I DO hop on the net if i am out or need to look up something really quick. My GO-TO device for surfing would be the iPad and if you prefer surfing on the iPhone rather then the iPad, then your seriously retarded....

Sending Emails i do on the iPhone, but the iPhone and its 512 ram will speed up emails how? It wont....Everything will be at the same pace as the iPad

Storing photos, The same as the iPad

Taking notes on the iPhone? Yeah, really QUICK notes that i can later update via my iPad.

Settings appts? yeah, When i am out and about...which later will sync to my iPad..

I dont know what some people use there iPad for but as stated, for what i do, My iPad is fast and adding another 256mb of ram will not improve anything for my needs.

Now the iPhone has options the iPad doesnt ( 720p video for example ) which that 512 ram will come in handy...

Some of you people expect way to much from the iPad, seriously..

For what it does, it does it well.

Nope, still going to get one.

In some ways, for my uses at least, it makes more sense to have more RAM in iPhone than iPad. When I finally get around to getting an iPad, it will be used as a casual surfing, browsing, reading etc machine and so I cannot see it being subjected to any 'performance' use (that's what my MacBook is for) or, to be fair any real multitasking (with OS4, obviously) as I would be at home so if I want music in the background I use my Hifi etc.

However, my iPhone would be my only bit of kit to do most things when I'm out and about. So for this, I'd prefer it to be very quick at doing what I want it to and also capable of making the most of multitasking. For instance I would be much more likely to use a few 'intensive' apps such as GPS and background audio at the same time. So the RAM here will be great as it will make everything nice and responsive (it may even make CoPilot vaguely useful...)

Well, that's my thoughts anyways!

Well said sir.

I already bought an iPad but will most likely be selling it to my cousin. The reason I liked the iPad so much was because it was so much faster than my 2G iPhone. The iPhone 4 will be just as fast as the iPad with more features. I have a feeling that one device (iPad/iPhone 4) will not be getting much use from me once I have both. The fact that the iPhone will have 512MB RAM, gyro, HD video recording, iMovie, front facing camera, and iOS 4 a few months earlier makes me believe the iPad will be the device getting less use.

Thanks, I think this is the only response from someone who has yet to buy an ipad. Didnt expect everyone else to say they had made a mistake

All this thread really tells me is that Consumers are fickle, for reasons that often have no basis in fact. Scroll back a month or so ago and read all the "I'll never touch an iPhone agai, ipad rulez!" threads proclaiming how the iPhone was now just relegated to phone and text use.

The reality is that the iPad is no more/less than it was at launch day. I have both devices now and will be swapping my 3G for a 4 next week. Personally, I have felt my iPad is a large iPod touch with some bonuses. But i am using both devices now and am pleased with the use cases I have for both.

The only thing that has changed is the bloom is on a different rose, and once again, people have a need to justify what they know is really just an emotional reaction to that.

I'm still waiting to get an iPad, the memory isn't an issue for me. Money is the issue! And the Apple queue of products. The Mac Mini is the next update, then possibly I'll get the iPad.

But it's still has a small screen?!?! With the same logic we shouldn't own an iphone 3gs AND an ipad, but of course they are different devices so work together. I still don't understand why a higher resolution small screen will be more useful than the 3gs screen? The websites for instance will still be sized the same fonts etc, they will just be sharper. A larger screen will always be desired.

I'm actually going the other way, I'm thinking of selling my 3gs and downsizing to a smaller phone, hopefully the SE x10 mini comes out stateside, and of course you'll have to pry my ipad from my cold dead fingers.

No it doesn't, because I already have one, and frankly It hasn't lagged at all so I don't really care

Yes I'd like a new mini too but my bank balance is weeping :p

nope

i am getting one and i'm not concerned about spec-peeping

the processor and os are designed for the device and it works beautifully

It maybe doesn't lag but what the 256 ram does is reloading your webpage when you browse on more then one site, it's very annoying and a waste of bandwith, wouldn't happen with 512 ram.
And it's the reason you will maybe never see imovie or any app which needs a lot of ram like photoshop on this. I'm waiting for the ipad pro, I think the second generation will get out the full potential of this type of device.

Actually, I never knew how much ram the iPad had in it. All I knew was that it was fast at web and email, instant on, and could get online almost anywhere with 3G. I'm sitting 5 feet from my Mac Mini, yet I'm checking email and Internet with the iPad. The convenience is fantastic, and it goes with me almost everywhere.

I agree my ipads dead fast now with 256MB, but I now wonder if it will be as fast in a few months running ios4.

I don't expect iOS4 to run significantly slower than 3.2 does now. Having less memory means that we will be able to have fewer Apps suspended in the background. However the foreground App should run at much the same speed as it does today. I'd expect the most noticeably difference to be that Apps will have to start from scratch more often than on the iPhone 4.
