The iPad mini has a screen more than twice the size of the iPhone plus. I have an iPhone plus and no way does it replace a mini.

And iPad apps make much better use of the screen real-estate and landscape mode than the plus phones. It's my biggest complaint about the plus phones.. not an iPad mini-mini.

Yes, the Mini supports actual tablet apps, the plus phones don't. A large phone doesn't equal a small tablet. For some people it may be close enough, but they are still different classes of devices.

The Mini 4 must be viable to me, since I bought one on Saturday. I will give my Mini 2 to my dad after I set it up for him. But the screen is better than the 2, the web surfing is smoother and more fluid and the WiFi works better. The bottom line is that any device is viable if it meets your needs. If it doesn't meet your needs, it is not viable.

Depends on usage. iPad mini is better for web browsing, documents, etc. If you're using it to watch widescreen videos, effective real estate after letterboxing is around the same as the iPhone Plus display.

Granted, I do understand the sentiment. The reason I went with a smaller phone is because for my usage, I found the iPhone Plus to have all the same cons as a tablet while having none of the pros of the iPad mini. Personally, I'd really rather have an iPhone phablet the size and form factor of the iPad mini.

What size smartphone do you have? If you already an iPhone Plus or similar, then go 9.7.

As the owner of a Plus iPhone, an iPad Mini 4 and an Air 2 I cannot see the logic of this statement.

Using the 5.5" iPhone is a different experience to the Mini 4 and it's not a comparable replacement. There is also a significant difference in using and carrying a 9.7" iPad when compared to the Mini.

Each has its own niche...

Completely agree. Just picked up an iPad Mini 4 even though everyone's predicting its impending demise. Apple would be crazy to do away with the segment altogether. It's a completely different experience than using an iPhone 7 Plus. For one, the aspect ratio is different, which makes the mini better for reading. The experience between a 4:3 7.9" screen and a 16:9 5.5" screen is not at all the same.

Picked up a Gold Cellular iPad mini 4 16GB from Gamestop for $202 yesterday. Looks pretty unused except for a 1mm blemish on the side but it's going in a protective case anyways. It even had iOS 9 on it. Screen, front and rear are perfect without a scratch and the tablet still has 3 months of Apple warranty to my surprise. I just needed something bigger for reading books, browsing the internet and media consumption without downloading. I'm not installing games but that's why I got a 256GB iPhone 7 Plus.
Shocked that there was no difference in price between the cellular version and the wifi only model. Did in-store pickup to avoid shipping cost. I debated on getting the "new iPad" but I already had an Air 2 and looking at the non-laminated screen will fell like a downgrade to me. I did a speed comparison between my iPhone 7 Plus and while the iPhone was faster by maybe a second or two in everything the reward was more content displayed on screen.
If you can live with 16GB I would check them out. And seeing how this iPad mini once retailed for $539 I'm reluctant to buy at full retail now.

I just got an iPhone 7 Plus last Friday, and while I am thoroughly enjoying my new iPhone, I absolutely love my iPad mini 4, which I am using right now to read this post. If you can find a good price for one, I would say go for it.

I had the original mini and mini 2, but sold them both. For the last year I was ipad-free. Right now, I'm considering buying another one. I would have liked to get 9.7 pro primarily for True Tone display, but it's just too expensive for me. I'm in between mini 4 and 2017 ipad. For portability and display I'm considering the mini 4, but I'm at two minds about the processing power. How does it work on 10.3.1? By the way my main uses will be browsing, streaming and reading comics. I don't play games too much. So I guess my question is will it be enough? Would anyone recommend it?
Browsing, streaming, and reading work fine for me - on my iPad mini 2.

This is me. Had an iPad Air 2 which I stopped using when I got my iPhone 7 Plus. Sold it in December but just recently began to miss it. Came across a deal on a iPad mini 4 this week and I actually like the smaller size better than the iPad Air 2. Much easier to use in bed. I use side by side apps on a regular basis and I enjoy the larger amount of screen content vs the iPhone.
If Apple can figure out how make phones like Samsung (no spec difference between S8 and S8+ other than battery and screen size) I would buy the smaller model and keep interest in iPads.
Let's hope for a iPad mini pro; I would buy this.

i use the iPad mini4 for pretty much your uses: browsing, news reading, streaming, email, no gaming. primarily i use it when traveling where its size and weight matter. the earlier minis got sluggish as the iOS updated into 8 so i dumped the earlier mini. no complaints on 10.3.1with the mini 4.

i find the larger iPads cumbersome to hold for any length of time, so far me the mini 4 works great. in the end its all personal preference. many will argue exactly the opposite, try both at an apple store and decide.

I totally agree with this. The Mini 4 performs well and is perfect for travel.

If anything there will be a refreshed "iPad Mini" with a A9 and the body of a Mini 2, it will be a mini version of the budget iPad, as sales of Mini decline I don't expect Apple to give it any special treatment with a "Pro" model

I think you mean mini 3. I don't think apple would release a new iPad without Touch ID. But I disagree that apple would take this approach. The reason apple took a step back with the 2017 iPad was to create a bigger gap between the pro model and the entry model for the 9.7" category. In the 7.9" category there is no pro model therefore it wouldn't make sense to demote the iPad mini any more than it already is. If there's only one mini model then it makes most sense for it to be evenly balanced between performance and price.

Mini users would at most get a Mini with a A9 and a Truetone display, Apple isn't going to go nuts with the lowest selling iPad model

Actually, data I've seen suggests that the 12.9" is the lowest selling model, but the Mini has a much lower profit margin per unit.

I am using my Mini 4 much more than my MacBook Pro. Surfing, email, and photo editing. My iPhone SE is now my go to camera and I kept two point and shoots and sold off my SLR gear. I am saving up for an iPad Pro 9.7 with 128gb and the Apple Pencil for more precise photo editing. My Mini will be the one I carry with me when I want a larger screen than the phone.

I have a mini 4.

Not worth it at this point.

It's sometimes a smooth experience but it's got some slight lag and skipped frames frequently too. It runs well overall but it's noticeable when the animation isn't too hot. Was like this on iOS 9 as well. But it's also smooth at times.

It does multitask very nicely. But so will the other 2GB ram equipped iPads.

But unless you must have that form factor, I'd invest into something else right now, especially the new iPad with the A9. It's cheap and you get a pretty big boost from the A8 in the mini 4 from a processing perspective.

I am on my third Mini, I started with an original iPad Mini 32 GB when it came out in 2012. Two years later I graduated to a Mini 2 64 GB, and now I have a Mini 4 128 GB. I have a standard sized 6S for my phone and I have no desire for the larger size. I usually keep my phone in my pocket and I would hate to hold the larger phone in my hands. I would had bought an iPhone SE if they were out in 2015 when I purchased my phone.

I like the Mini size and weight for its portability and light weight. I carry it in my hands a lot when I walk places. I primarily use it for web surfing, reading Kindle Books, email, media consumption (YouTube, Xfinity, Netflix, my own stored movies), storing technical PDF manuals (Civil Engineering) in iBooks, that I use as references. I also use it for light note taking at meetings along with a thin membrane Logitech keyboard (it works well for that). My Minis have all been wi-fi only models that I link to my phone's wireless hotspot when away from home or work. For those types of uses there is nothing better for me than the Mini.

If I played games on the iPad or needed the faster processing power, or wanted the pencil, I would go with a full-size iPad or an iPad Pro. However, almost all of my actual work production and games I do play are done on my office PC or my personal PC laptop. I don't see using an iPad for those tasks, in my case. I still need PC's in my life.

I am not speaking for anybody else. Everybody's needs and uses are different. I am only saying that the Mini fits that niche nicely and meets my needs, and I recently upgraded to the Mini 4 in fear that it might be the last one that Apple sells.

Its still viable in my opinion but the biggest shortcoming is the A8. Even though it has 2gb of ram, its still a chip from an iPhone 6, which is a beefed up A7 essentially. They should really put an A9 in it at this point.

No at this point it needs a A10 but we know that won't happen. Apple needs to just refresh the iPad Pro and Mini to have a fresh lineup.
