The iphone is such an iconic product and for years it was always exciting when a new phone came out. Sure some years weren’t as interesting as others but it mostly always felt like a good upgrade even if you did it every year.

But now, all it seems to be every year is better camera, faster processor and (sometimes) better battery life. The last time a truly exciting thing happened IMO was the all screen design with the X. I have an iphone 12 but I’m not really sure what it does that my XS didn’t do (yeah i know there are things but i mean for my personal circumstances). It all just feels the same. I upgrade every 2-3 years on average, maybe i just need to hold on for them for longer.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Absolutely disagree. If you're looking to big changes, really think about it. In the history of the iPhone, the major changes were:

1) The introduction of the AppStore
2) The evolution of the (screen) size and split in different sizes in the lineup
3) The introduction of TouchID
4) The introduction of the edge to edge screen and FaceID

Everything else, when you really think about it, is just a succession of small steps of improvement in hardware technology. Better screen quality year after year, better speaker quality, better battery life, better camera quality, better speeds and power, etc.

So... no, the iPhone isn't boring. Or maybe it is for you, but this has nothing to do with the iPhone 12.

How can you say that "it mostly always felt like a good upgrade even if you did it every year" when the only big difference between the iPhone 6 and the 6s is just more power and a better camera? The only difference between the 6s and the 7 is a new haptic Home button, more power and the removal of the jack? What are the differences between the 7 and the 8?! What are the differences between the X and the XS? What are the differences between the 11 Pro and the 12 Pro? Or, going back, what are the differences between the 4 and the 4s ?

The point is: big evolutions come every 3 or 4 years and as various people already said, the smartphone industry is currently pretty mature. Every year between this 3/4 years cycle you only get improvements.

I'm sorry but your statement is a non sense. It's just the result of YOU wanting more and more tech. That's what chinese and japanese smartphone makers are good at.

The App Store was introduced in iPhone OS. 2 which was supported on the original iPhone in 2008.

Okay. You might be right, I wasn’t aware that the first generation iPhones supported iOS 2. We never had the first edition available in Europe (where I’m from), so... you’re right about the iPhone, but the correct date when referring to a ‘smartphone' should then be 2008, not 2007 :)

You upgrade every 2 to 3 years and don't see 'major' changes?

I don't think I'll ever get bored with the iPhone. Every year those little improvements add up to something better than the year before. I've never felt that the new iPhone I bought was worse than the one I got last year.

Hehehe. Personally, I wasn’t into iPhones at all until the X. For me the iPhone 12 Mini is all that and more in a smaller form factor. I love it. The battery isn’t nearly as bad as some make it out to be either. For my use, connected to the Apple Watch, the battery is practically the same as my X. Considering a high end phone packed into such a small, high quality package, a full day’s use is good enough for me. I’ve seen almost every tech magazine call it the best 'small phone' of the year... Android phones may seem more exiting on paper, but try using one for 6 months or so... they don’t compare at all, imo.

I've come to appreciate "boring". To me it means stable and consistent. Is it cool to have a phone with tons of crazy features? Of course, and I fell for the glitz with other OEMs several times in the past few years. But what would always happen is I'd use the flashy features for a few days then either forget about them or turn them off after they started getting in the way of other things. I'd rather have incremental upgrades that a plenty of time & testing was put into along with refinement of core features instead of gimmicks that just bloat everything up and add more points of failure.

Yes it didn’t launch everywhere at once and they focussed on the bigger markets first.

I having a hard time motivating myself to buy a new iPhone. I would like the iP 12 mini, but just don't want that crappy iP SE battery life that I got now again...

There was no iOS 2 as Apple called it iPhone OS until June 2010, rebranding it as iOS when they released iOS 4 for the iPhone and iPad. Again Potato potato on the 2007 iPhone being a smartphone.

Have been saying same thing for while. Apple should not have a yearly update should be sporadic and every 2-3 years when the technology really changes.

It’s all about preference. If you’re not happy with iPhone, there are plenty of other phone manufacturers that may have something you’re looking for. That’s the beauty of choice - I, personally, like iPhone better compared to Android and this is coming from a girl who’s been with Android for 8 years before going back to iPhone. No one is forcing anyone to get the iPhone. You make that decision yourself. You’re not happy with it? Buy something else!
