Having used the Max for a full month, I've given it a try. I had hoped to be used to it by now, or to have found a way to use my phone so it doesn't get in the way, but it does.

For the record, I don't have a defective unit - the phone works brilliantly, and in every other way I couldn't be happier with my XS Max. But Face ID seriously sucks. It's not as quick or as efficient as Touch ID, and I couldn't care less about how much more secure it is.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

I got iPhone X last year after having iPhone 7, I bought into the hype but I didn't like face ID. It wouldn't work half the time, I couldn't even unlock it while laying in bed, you literally have to stare at it right infront of your face. After using it for 8 months i got the iPhone 8 Plus and sold the X, Nothing beats touch ID. I've been tempted for the XS Max but im sure ill end up hating face ID again. I'm probably going to keep the 8 Plus at least another year.

Maybe my face is easy to ID, but it hasn't failed once on the XS Max or XR.

TouchID would fail randomly (first gen was bad, 2nd gen was better), and when you have to reposition your finger and try again it takes longer than FaceID.

I was worried about moving to Face ID, but it’s been working very well. I briefly had the X last year and wasn’t impressed with it, but the new system seems much improved. Also I’m glad it works with my sunglasses since this was my biggest worry.

I think Face ID is great, it’s even better on
The max.

No surprise there op looks like you made your mind up a long time ago.

Just more of the same.

Works just fine for me. Sure it does fail every now and then but not often enough for it to be an annoyance.

I loved TouchID and like FaceID even more.

You can switch off attention. Mine worked great in bed or at angles, even mounted in the car, what I did was register 2 angles of my face one higher and lower. Seems to have done the trick at any angle low or high..

Works fine here, it’s not noticible as “it just works” and phone unlocks without having to do anything really, I prefer this over Touch ID any day.

Adam.

And getting into apps that need a sign on is one less action. In the car is the most benift since mine is mounted at pointed at me and you don’t have to move ur hand in a weird position to put on Touch ID.

Most of these Face ID haters don’t like change or already hated the idea so didn’t fully get on board while trying it.
I don’t like to take home fat girls from the bar but I still do...:D

The only time it fails for me is if I forget to look at it, which I prefer. Or if I’ve suddenly covered my mouth etc. Other than that it’s a breeze to use and super quick. The desk thing is awkward I agree. But hey it’s no biggie to tap in your passcode or lift up the phone. I’m just hoping they can add landscape identification to the iPhone.

I never disliked Face ID which I never on iPhone X but I like Touch ID too so I started using iPhone 8. But after a while I felt it requires less effort unlocking iPhone. It’s like automatic, I pick up the iPhone and it’s unlocked I don’t need to do anything except swiping up. So I am into Face ID more after iPhone 8 again.

What amazes me, is that these threads are still still having this discussion almost a year later that ‘Face ID still sucks’ or ‘touch ID was better’. Either you choose to accept Apples future with Face ID as there biometric security option (or) use an older model iPhone that uses touch ID or choose entire product different altogether.

For more of a practical answer outside a tech forum, I have never heard anyone complain about Face ID in the slightest.

Wouldn’t go back for a second. TouchID wasn’t reliable for me during the winter months when I suffer from dry skin.

FaceID works flawlessly for me. It’s failed twice since I’ve had it (September 21st) - once when I was in the middle of a gigantic yawn and once when I had my hand over my mouth. It’s a background process that I don’t even need to think about. The only time I know it’s there is when it reveals the content of my notifications on the lock screen for my eyes only. It’s the fastest, simplest and most reliable authentication method on a mobile device to date.

If it’s not working like that for you, something IS wrong. Either the device, the setup or user obsessional determination to find flaws and hate it.

Really, I love how you presume to know what people who don't agree with your stance are all about, you must run the most amazing counselling practice or be a top behavioural psychologist, or have developed the first provable case of telepathy! Personally I love change and new things when they improve my life, phones don't improve my personal life they aid it at best, now a cure for my Osteoporosis from Apple via a electronic implant full on nanobots, hell I would embrace that change or even a exoskeleton enabling me to walk again. I revel in useful new things, but Touch ID worked fine for me nearly 100% of the time, since getting my XS I detest face ID at times, it seems to not like my silver spiky hair and silver goatee, and wont read my face laying in bed, and as to bright sunlight, well that never stopped my thumb, but it sure can bring Touch ID to its knees, and no my phone isn't faulty its been checked.

So yes its a good phone, not a game game changer in my life. However for myself face ID is really pain in the a*** but please don't presume to know anything about my personality type okay. Now do you fancy a hand down from that high horse? Sorry I cant help with that just yet, I'm still awaiting for my solar powered exoskeleton with a skin like membrane that can move my legs and a VR attachment for my glasses so I can monitor how far I can walk on one charge, and a port in my neck/head so when plugged in my muscles can directly apply signals from my brain to the suit to make it move without cumbersome controllers. I love new gadgets and technology that will one day bring about real meaningful change... Oh and nice touch on body shaming people

I have always liked touch ID and I declined to purchase the iPhone X since the first year of Face ID might be problematic or at least not as good as touch ID. Now that I have the iPhone XS, I have changed my attitude towards this new technology. It works fast and thus far there are no hiccups. I still like touch ID and would not mind having both on the phone, but I find no issues with Face ID at all.

TouchID feels "broken" to me everytime i have to use it on my iPad or Macbook.

I feel like it's breaking my flow, while FaceID just happens. Especially when using Apps with FaceID/TouchID lock.

Coming from an android guy who was always anti apple, I’ve recently switched and got an iPhone Xs and I was skeptical about Face ID but I find it really works well, fast, easy and reliable

Annoys the hell out of me when I use my wife's iPhone 7 or my iPad Pro and stare stupidly at the screen until I realise it's not going to authenticate. Particularly annoying with the iPad as I vary my use between portrait and landscape which involves fumbling for the home button (needless to say I've ordered the new iPad Pro). So, in my opinion and compared to FaceID, TouchID sucks but I appreciate other people's point of view - though I don't feel the need to create another thread about it.

When the X came out I saw the future. No more fingerprint scanner and I was not happy. Never had a single issue with it. Pretty much thought that my 7+ would be my last iPhone. Went back to Android a few months ago and missed the performance and stability of iOS. So figured I'd give this face ID a shot. Picked up an XR. It as really impressed me. Only had a few times it didn't work. But the fact that it works in the dark, when my appearance is a little different (hat, sunglasses, etc) and I can't fool it even if I try has sold me. Works flawlessly with apps that I previously used the fingerprint scanner.

Was skeptical about FaceID.

But after 2 days loved it and wouldn’t want to go back.

Especially getting securely into Apps is much easier to me than with TouchID.

Only time it reliable doesn’t work is with sunglasses with raindrops on the glasses. But TouchID didn’t work either with wet fingers.

I experience way less fails with FaceID than I had with TouchID.

I've only had my XS Max for a full day now and this feature is probably the most amazing thing to me to ever come to the iPhone. It works every time no matter what I'm wearing from glasses to a hat on my head. It's not failed me once. Apple did an excellent job with this!
