I decided to get over my paranoia and here I am with a dead machine :p

What if I ask them to move this screen into the iMac I had at first? That was otherwise perfect. Should not take them longer than 15 minutes to do that!

If they've still got that machine in the store that's actually a great idea and I assure you it IS no more than a 15 minute job for them.

When I sent my 24" iMac in for gradient issues they just replaced the LCD panel itself. It took them a few minutes to do it and then it was on its way back to me. Unfortunately for me, I'm not geographically close to an Apple Store so I have to send mine in to the service center in Tokyo every time. I'm told here in Japan they don't do such work in the stores anyway and even if I did bring the machine in they'd send it from there to the service center.

Best of luck, Fiddler.

Hi!

Latest news. They were not going to exchange the screen. They said every reject had to go back to Apple as is. They were very reluctant to repair the DOA one, even if I liked the screen very much.

They allowed me to try another machine, and I agreed to get a refund if I was still unhappy with that one.

I was sceptical at first because the latest models left in the store were the week 48 ones. But I checked it and found it to be very good. I am now working with it and touch wood it's all going well. Is it completely "perfect"? No. If you spend time testing and staring you might see a small patch of tinge in the right hand corner, but not worse than the tinge my eyes create themselves in other places. Actually this screen was superior to all other iMacs in the store that I looked at. It is more than good enough for me to work with, and I have not seen a better screen (except for maybe the iMac #2 that went DOA on me).

I am finding out that every LCD screen I look at turns slightly Yellow to my eyes eventually. Also it seems patches develop that actually move around when my eyes move around the screen.

OMG.... actually everything around me has a yellow tinge now. Nothing is white :-( The white of the screen has set the white balance of my eyes to perceive all other whites as yellow.

Time to see the doctor....

Fiddler, hook up an external monitor (hopefully you have a good one) next to the iMac. It's so obvious to see it this way. No tricks nothing.

I find it disappointing that you cannot keep that iMac #2 (Why can't you just repair that one?)

Why?? If Fiddler is satisfied with the machine he has now then leave him be.

Yes, I do agree on that. It is not a difficult procedure to swap panels.

Well, to be honest, as amazing as nr2 seemed in the shop, I never tried it at home, so I could not be as obsessing over it as I now have been over this one.

No, I don't have a good external monitor. Have been living with laptop screens for more than 10 years. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Haha the screen is whiter than anything in my house (walls, furniture etc.) :D

Am happy and ready to set this baby up. Clean install and new start :)

I hope the screens become so good and reliable that everyone can start ordering these babies.

I did not mention, but my matte 15" MacBook Pro (mid 2007) screen, sitting next to the iMac, which I liked till now looks like utter crap... yellow all over compared to the iMac. Cost me just as much....

^ that's good to hear. I had the opposite experience (though my 2009 MBP has a glossy LED screen). The 27" iMac looks horrifyingly disgusting in comparison.

Eating my words... :-(

Tinge is getting worse... Week 48 definitely avoid.

Will keep it and see how it develops. Just working with it, it's great... a pleasure... a fantastic screen, but right lower area has different gradient. More than when I started it up first. Manager of shop said it goes away in a week or so. Not really buying that... Still 100x better than my laptop screen. What am I worried about?

Counted dead isight pixels more precisely.... 21... No time for more exchanges coming week. Will wait till last possible refund day and see how it is... Or at a certain point have screen and iSight replaced under apple care?

I hate this.

About #2... It just seems wrong to have a 2 week repair cycle on a totally new machine.

If your only concern are the iSight dead pixels, well I wouldn't really consider that as grounds for return. After all, it's a cheap little webcam! Not exactly a $500 DSLR (which BTW, experience hot pixels). :)

However, if the more developed tinge is bothering you, then by all means replace it.

Yea. Get your point. But if you use the cheap webcam a lot, it can get a bit disturbing (not for me obviously ;-) . My MacBook Pro has 0 dead pixels in iSight. The other iMacs had 2, 11 and 16 dead pixels. I think it sucks.

BTW. For me at this moment, in the morning having started up after sleep, it seems the tinge is less. It seems to get worse as it is on for a long time.

Guess another reason to get a life :p

Have all of the i7s you have tried so far been assembled in Shanghai, Fiddler? My week 47 is Shanghai. I think most are. I checked the iSight on mine as well and there's not a single dead pixel. I also wonder if some of these problems (aside from the yellow tinge) could be related to how they are handled in shipping.

By the way, this is off the topic but... I am a violinist and teacher as well. :)

Well, this one was assembled in China. And they have all been i5's

I really have stopped worrying. I showed my discontent to Apple by opening 4 boxes in total and rejecting 3.... Modern day heroism..

I might get the iSight fixed one day. Heck, I might get another exchange for all I know. Now I need to work and get this out of my head. There are more important things. And the computer works perfectly. I will calibrate soon, that should be interesting.

What coincidence. Violin teaching is a lot of fun isn't it!
