Is it true that if you go in for an iPad battery replacement, Apple takes your iPad and gives you a refurbished one?

Pretty much. They don't really do battery replacements on iPads because it requires them to soften glue and take things apart, so they'll recycle/refurbish/trash the old one and give you a "white box" model. The thing that's always a mystery to me is how they decide if you'll pay or not, and if so, how much that will be.

I've had them charge me less than $100 for a battery replacement, I've had them claim I needed to pay for a whole new iPad, I've had them just swap it out no charge, it just kind of depends. You never seem to get the same story. But I do know that they don't bother with taking your original iPad apart, and you can rest assured that the refurb you'll get is in good shape. Maybe even better shape than your current one.

I believe the company line for the last few years is that you get battery replacements if you have AppleCare+ and you pay for a replacement out of warranty or without AppleCare+.

They will agree to swap your iPad only if your battery health is below 80%.

You can check that (indirectly) by checking your iPad analytics data here.

So if I understand this right you can take your iPad and do a battery replacement if it shows under 80% battery health according to Apple.
Then the refurbished must be at 100%?
Just thinking if you brought your iPad for battery replacement, I wouldn’t be satisfied with 90-95% battery health.
So if the refurbished is at 100% then it have to be almost new?
Is this right or am I missing something?

And another question related to this topic . . . . does Apple transfer the data from old to replacement iPad as part of the exchange process? I mean is that done at the store when the handoff occurs, or must I wipe the old unit and restore from backup on the replacement?

It seems that you need to enable (or not disable) “Share iPad Analytics” for those reports to be available.

What about an iPad Air 2? Would they swap mine for a refurbished model for the £129 battery replacement fee?

iPad air 2 is too old for battery service, even the more recent 9.7 pro is no longer serviced

Batteries in Apple refurbished equipment are always new.
Battery replacement is part of the refurbishing process.

A new iPad is not at 100%, it's generally around 106% in my experience.
After my battery service the replacement device was at 104%, which means it's new.

It’s still listed on the Apple site as £129 (as is the 9.7 pro)
