I did last year and lets just say I am going back to iphone. I have a S7 Edge and it is not great. My list:

Good
1) . The screen is very nice looking and the Edge is pretty nice as well. However that is where it ends.

Bad
1)The battery life in real usage is crap compared to my wife's iphone. My battery is below 50% before 11AM
2) iMessage is so much better than what the Galaxy has.
3) Music app is complete garbage compared to iphone.
4) I love how easy it is to use itunes to transfer video to the device.
5) Most people I know have an iphone but of course I can't facetime them.
6) I fly American AIrlines a lot. Hit the home button on the iphone and on the opening screen you have a shortcut to your boarding pass. I have to go in and open the app each time on Samsung.
7) Calendar app is worlds better than what the Samsung has with integration to icloud.
8) Voicemail is a complete and separate icon so if I want to check messages I don't go to the phone app but go to the visual voicemail app.
9) Internet constantly hangs and you get the wait message or close app message.
10) Funny that someone mentioned that it isn't laggy. It wasn't in the beginning. Is all the time now and I am up to date on updates.

I'll be going back to Apple next month

Because android has lower quality apps, just look how Snapchat runs on android compared to iOS. Too many subpar apps on android + no iMessage=android sucks
I still have my iPad mini I could use with my MacBook Pro for iMessage.

These are all the same reasons I return the Note 8 this week after having it 2 days.

ive had iPhones since 2008 and was looking forward to the x model but some things are pushing me to try android for a year to see what it's like.
First the pricing. I have a 7+ 128 and I would only get the 999 version which is 64 gig which I feel like Apple did intentionally for people knowing they'd will go the 150$ more 256 version which doesn't sit with me well.
The notch with video and games just seems odd to me. It's a huge deal to me if there's a notch with games. Movies. Etc... it's not refined in the os "yet".
I'm ok with face id but why make you swipe up. Another thing to do. At least give the option.
Is now a good time to try a note for a year and ride this out? I'm sure next year pricing and storage plans plus the apps updated for the notch video/games will be a better experience.
Only issue is I have an Apple watch too. Possibly would work with an android phone considering it has its own cell connection?
Also, upgrade time window if released in November then next year you won't be eligible fil November missing the normal September window. I feel like Apple is throwing so many negatives towards its loyal people.
Kinda torn here
Try it.

Damn good write up, I believe it’s helped me make my decision!!
where's this from?
[doublepost=1505263373][/doublepost]
I'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote in another thread about the Note 8...

"I've only bought Apple phones up to this point, starting with the 3g, the 4, the 5, and now the 7+. The thing is, the 7+ is just boring, and it's not because of the hardware, it's because iOS largely looks and feels the same as it always has. Moving around in my iPhone 5 started slowing down, and things like typing wasn't as quick, but all my apps still ran just as well on the 5 as they do on my 7+. Basically, it made me actually ask "why the hell did I just pay $1000 for the 7+"?

What's new about the iPhone 8? Bezel-less screen, OLED, and wireless charging. Things that Samsung have already had, and in the case of OLED, Samsung has had it for a very long time. For the software, iOS will again feel the same with a few new features, but most of the interesting features are only for iPad. Whereas Android is so customizable with how you phone looks and feels it's crazy. Seriously, just check out homescreen setups on youtube to see how you can truly make your phone look different from every other phone, whereas that isn't the case with iOS.

Also, true multitasking is a big deal for me, having youtube on while surfing the internet is awesome, and something you can't do with iOS. Not to mention all of the other features of android, including the additional features that Samsung has added (multi-tasking is much more powerful on Samsung phones). For those who are still under the impression that Samsung phones are a lag fest because of their software, that's not the case anymore so you can drop that narrative. I've seen plenty of S8's and S8+'s run smooth as butter, with maybe a hiccup every once in a blue moon. My iPhone 7+ has a hiccup once every blue moon as well. From all reports, the UI on the Note 8 has been even further optimized to eliminate those hiccups. So again, you can stop spreading the lagfest narrative of 3 years ago.

Then there's the S-Pen. I used to be one of those types who thought it was just a gimmick, and simply replaced your finger with a pen, and only really helpful if you're an artist. That's actually what Apple would like you to think if you go back to when Steve Jobs was knocking it on stage. Then I realized how much I'd use it as an engineer. I'm always brainstorming new concepts and sketching out ideas to quickly see if they have merit, drawing free body diagrams, or even circuit schematics. I'd always find myself looking for a piece of paper and pen when I had an idea pop into my head only to see that there was nothing around. That's all solved with the S-Pen, especially since it's so quick that you can just write with the screen off and not have to go unlock the phone, open an app, and then start typing (like you would with an iPhone).

That's not it though, like I said, the pen doesn't simply replace your finger, it makes a lot of common tasks more efficient. Something simple like copying text, just hold the button on the pen and drag the across the text. With my iPhone, half the time I first try to select something, it doesn't get the right letter, then I have to spread the corners of the selecting tool to my start and end points of what I want selected. Sounds simple, but the Pen takes a tiny pain in the a** and makes it super convenient, add all of those tiny pain in the a**'s over the course of two years and that's a lot of time and headaches saved.

What about other things? As someone who travels and encounters websites in foreign languages, just hover the pen over the sentence you want translated and it does it then and there. Otherwise, you have to go through that tiny pain in the a** of selecting and copying the text, minimize the app, find and open google translate, then paste to finally see the translation. One step instead of 5-6 steps.

That's not even mentioning the easy creation of gifs, writing things on screenshots, etc... Basically, if you learn everything about the S-Pen and use all of the features it provides, it's a game changer. If you don't, at the very least it makes common tasks that everyone does at some point that much more convenient/faster.

Oh, and about cost. Yes, the note 8 unlocked goes for $930. The thing is, Samsung will let me trade my 5 year old iphone 5 in for $200. Now I'm only paying $730, good luck getting that type of deal from Apple. For pre-ordering, I also got a 128GB SD card and a fast wireless charger for free (worth ~$180). Even if you don't have any old phone to trade in, you are getting way more bang for your buck with the Note 8. Then, of course, 2 months down the road Samsung will be offering plenty of deals so you can get it for less, whereas the iPhone 8 will be just as expensive as it always was all the way up to the day the iPhone 9 is announced.

With all of that being said, for me, it's pretty obvious that the Note 8 is the way to go, and it's not even close."

I wrote this days ago, and after the unveiling of the X, my thoughts haven't changed at all.
I like to add that I realized that working with osx and android can happen. There are ways to transfer files...send files...and use cloud based service...it's all good. I regretted buying apple watch though...

When was the last time you tried an Android device? That might have been the case a few years ago but that is certainty not the case now. I will agree that the lack of an iMessage counterpart does suck. Google has something that is very close in the form of Google Allo but for some reason is reluctant to add basic functionality like SMS support to truly making it an iMessage competitor.

I switched to Android about a year ago after a few small back and forth cycles and can honestly say I do not miss IOS. There are some things though that I wish would come to android.

1) iMessage competitor
2) Apple Watch support (seriously Apple, you could sell a ton more watches if you made this a reality...)

I used to be embedded in the Apple ecosystem but I now find Google Play services just as useful if not more so. Those two things are the only things I miss from Apple.

Android does have a ton of poor quality apps, riddled with ads and do same thing as 20 of its copy cats. It's a war zone in the Google Play Store because it has so many apps. And quality control is none existent.

Have you seen IOS apps lately? Full of adds as well and there are some pretty crappy IOS apps out there as well... The point I am trying to make is that your staple apps are all there and are on par if not better then their IOS counterparts. Of course there will be a far greater number of apps and number of crappier apps on google play due to the less restrictions on app developers.... Just don't download them? For every crappy app I have found on google play there is a much better alternative app right next to it.

Quality control and the fact that I have to waist half a day just to find a quality app is another reason I'm not going back to Android.

The only great thing I can think of that makes Android far superior than iOS, is the black market of paid apps that can be downloaded for free.

That is certainty a valid point, but far from a knock on Android in my opinion. More options is always better in my opinion. Just depends on what everyone prefers.

I have been looking at the Pixel 2 for the past two months and once that is released I am making my decision on what ecosystem I want. I've noticed lately that I have been using Google services more and more even though everything I have is Apple. The only phone after today's announcement I want is of course the X but as others have said, its still iOS. I think im ready for something new to try and if I hate it, guess Ill just switch back in two years.

Pick up a Note 8. It costs you nothing (other than time) to try it out.

But, given the fact that you’ve been straight iPhone since 2007 and you have other Apple devices, I give you about a week before you return it. That’s about as long as I went on my three excursions into android.

Absolutely it's a great time to ditch stale boring LOCKED DOWN iOS. The iPhone X, yeah finally catching up to Android stuff they've had for years. And all for only $1,200 LOL

- Pixel XL line is hands the #1 best Android line, no question the smoothest, and gets updated immediately direct from Google.
- OnePlus 5 for $489 is a great cheaper alternative, running a stock Android type OS. Not a true flagship with all the bells and whistles but for the the price is a super nice phone.
- LG V30 would be next choice for a skinned UI
- Samsung, I'd pass on that.

Is it for sure you can't use the new Apple Watch without an iPhone?
I really hate how Apple priced the 64-256 making the 128gig people pushed into compromising or spending more money which they hope. Doesn't sit with me well at all
[doublepost=1505260623][/doublepost]
MacBook Pro (new model), iPad mini, Apple Watch, numerous cables and stands over house made for Apple stuff. It won't be easy....

That would make it not worth it to me and I'm pretty much all Google all the time

Given the current price of the S8+ compared to the iPhone X, yeah, now is probably the best time to give android a shot.

Apple is going to crazy town with pricing for the iPhone

Rubin’s Essential smartphone with 128gb storage is $699 just to give you some info on the cost versus what you would have to pay for that with an iPhone.

My opinion for trying Android coming from the Fischer Price phone, i mean iPhone;

- Pixel XL 2 would be top choice, it's gets announced early Oct. for sale end of Oct.
- Pixel XL if you want a phone right now this week, good deals found on Craigslist and Swappa
- LG V30 should be out early October
- OnePlus 5 is a Pixel type phone on the cheap, not a true flagship, but still a good phone.

That's it, I would stay away from Lagwiz Samsung phones, especially for your first Android ever or first Android in years, you want a smooth experience and truly only the Pixel line will give you that the best.

To add to the above - Motorola makes some very respectable devices at the low price points. This makes them an attractive option to buy outright to give Android a test drive. Those devices are also not significantly hampered by extras like a different launcher (such as on a Samsung) to cause lag or extra battery drain. So, for someone just wanting to try Android, look at Motorola, they're very close to stock and relatively inexpensive.

I've considered trying an Android phone. The latest iterations of the iPhone are great and the price can be justified, but they offer a lot more than I need. A mid-range Android phone would do me well. However, when I start looking seriously into them, I determine that getting an iPhone a couple of years old will do as well for a similar price and keep my devices (iPad Pro and rMBP) working together seamlessly.

As a Android user myself and a guardian of many iphones in my household, My response to this:

1)S7 is last year. The S8/Note 8 is this year

2)Android phone batteries will never be as long lasting as iphone. Not only do Iphones not do true multi tasking, but they don't come with Googles battery sucking apps fully loaded. Also, that usage is high. I suspect a dodgy app or bad reset. ( android does benefit from a bit of periodic maintenance). Reset your phone and disable the google apps you wouldt use if it was an iphone and you will see a marked improvement.

2) Not to those without IOS

3) Samsung music is ok but its not an itunes replacement. GPM is googles itunes equivelent and is fantastic. You should make your itunes comparison to something as relevent in the android space.

4)in the external environment, Itunes is an utter heap of *********. The Phone player might be ok, but good god, the itunes/Computer mechanism needs to die.

5) See point 2

6) That's an app issue. I use the (android) app widget for boarding passes. works a treat.

7) Disagree. The Samsung calendar is great imho. not sure what icloud has to do with anything. All calender's are sync'd immediately

8)You need to learn about speed dial/favorites

9) Never had that.

10) see point 2.

Personally, it reads like you just miss the iphone.

Gs8+ is smooth , haven't notice an lag and I came from 7 plus. I probably be back next year when apple releases a bigger version of iPhone 10
