But if you can build a box yourself? You can save gobs if money over the Mac Pro. Gobs. Or become a male prostitute as one poster suggested.

You don't save gobs (When I was young, I loved building systems - nowadays, my time is valuable)- you save a little bit, but I'd rather pay someone else to do all of the testing and deal with any hiccups.

Go with an AMD based system and you will get better performance for a lot less money. The Epyc CPUs are very interesting.

Well, see if you don’t need a kabillion cores and 128 GB of RAM? You just want a high end i7 and 32GB of RAM? With a Radeon 580? I saved gobs. I think it was around $1500 at the time.

As far as time, mine is as well. I have put one afternoon into the beast, and for the last 15 months it has worked perfectly. I even upgrade both OSes on it multiple times.

I'm a business owner. I run an online business that requires mac software. And the the iMac 5k is the perfect machine for me. I loved the announcement today, because if I was a different kind of business owner, it would be the right tool for my job. As it stands, I can get everything I need for far less. People have lost touch with what they actually need the specs for. If you're into gaming get a windows machine. A lot of pro sumer mac users will get by fine now with either an iMac, a mac mini specced up or a MacBook pro. But I know people in editing houses and what not and this machine is perfect for them, as well as very high end photographers who want that monitor. that all being said, the $1,000 for the stand is stupid. But I'd get it vesa mounted anyway lol

**** them and the high horse they rode in on.

$5,000 computer for the masses?

$6,000 monitor???

$999 for an aluminum stand???

My damn iPhone is already $1,000.

F them !!!!! Out of touch dumbasses!!!!

You have no idea how much does HP Z8 G4 costs with same specs.

I’m happy they created a computer for Bill Gates but I’m still left with no solution to stay as a Mac user. I need an expandable desktop that can cut 4K raw that will run Catalina. Shame on Apple, Tim Cook is a terrible CEO.

If you can’t pay for it, don’t think you really need it.

If I have a problem with an HP or Dell, they send a technician to my location. Apple doesn't do that.

You don't have to build a box yourself - there are a number of companies that build workstations. I can get a 24 core box with 128Gb of ram along with a faster 1Tb NMVe boot drive as well as the workstation version of that 580 for about 25% less - I'd also get the exact same support I would get from Apple - if it breaks, I ship it back to them.

I can't comment on the display, because that level of detail isn't needed for what I do.

they built you a hackintosh that they support thru os upgrades? Share.

The new Mac Pro is actually very competitively priced when compared to Z Workstations and other Pro machines. Yes, you could build a PC for cheaper, but professionals rarely do that. They go with workstations that have support behind them. So if you look at it that way, Apple is now the cheapest option for that type of pro workstation. Especially with the monitor. I've been in the market for a pro HDR reference display for DolbyVision grading, and the only ones on the market until today have cost around $50,000.

So before you start ripping on Apple for this Mac Pro, put things into perspective! Apple is seriously undercutting their competitors, and giving us a less expensive option that's arguably much, much better. Just because it wasn't designed for you doesn't mean it's not what real professionals want. This is exactly what we wanted!
The 5,1 stacked up well against the Z600 / Z800. This one doesn't. At lunch I did a quick comparison with the Z6. No, it's not an EXACT comparison, but in 3 minutes I had a comparable Z6 box in the $3400 range, prior to HP's discounts / coupons. Throw in the fact that an HP tech will be onsite the same day (next morning at the latest) if something goes wrong, and no, I don't believe the 7,1 is undercutting the competition.

If you can live with Dell's crap cases (cheap plastic exterior and messy cabling), no doubt you could configure a Precision workstation for even less. The 7,1 is overpriced, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a downward price adjustment before launch.

Maybe they need to have another round table for the enthusiasts.

Glad it's rackable, though! I'll be deploying lots of those.

Is the 7,1 CPU user inter-changeable as in the 5,1 ( not that I can afford that upgrade . .. . . ?

Does the z6 have 8 pcie slots?

You have no idea how much does HP Z8 G4 costs with same specs.
And you are intentionally ignoring how much better the Z8 is than this new cheese grater. HP doesn't even have a single socket Xeon-W workstation - and it is so intellectually dishonest to compare the dual socket Z8 to the MP7,1.

Does the z6 have 8 pcie slots?
Does the MP7,1 have full PCIe bandwidth, or does it use switches?

you were wrong in just about everything you said there.

A: Not a computer for the masses. it is a Mac "PRO" for "Professionals" you can by a camera for the MASSES for $300 a Professional Camera will cost you about $2K+

B: Most people don't need a Reference grade Calibrated grading monitor. Don't buy one. Hook it to a Small 4K TV with Dolby vision. Will run you a couple Hundred and you will be much happier.

D: No that tis for the Pro stand. There is the regular base that it comes with or the Pro FANCY base. You are more than welcome to get a VESA arm or stand and use that for about $100 on Amazon.

IF you could in theory even get close to these specs from a vendor like DELL it would be WAY more money. When you compare apples to apple "no pun intended" Apple is actually pretty damn ceap when it comes to their workstation class hardware. They always have been. Back in 2008 when I started my company we bought MacPros to run windows on cause the exact same specs from DELL or HP were about 3-5 hundred more than Apple.

if you are the Masses or even prosumer buy a decked out 5K iMac with the i9 it is a great machine.

Don't be an ignorant. You just need to use only one CPU. Do you even aware the price of Intel Xeon Gold 6144 which has similar spec with Mac Pro 2019 8 cores?

Dunno, I went to HP and tried to configure a Z8 G4 with comparable specs to he base MP, came up to $9000. It’s funny when people look at the pro workstation (especially completely custom stuff) and expect it to be priced as a gaming box.

If OP wants something for the masses, they should look at the iMac. For more d-range high performance computing, iMac Pro is great. The new MP is high-end enterprise.

That’s great and all but there is no real desktop solution for myself. It’s really sad. Shame on Apple. I’ll have to go to hackintosh.

There is no ”regular” base, it comes without a base

I'm just trying to process that Apple is planning to sell a $5000 display, and unless you *separately* buy a VESA mount and arm, or a $1000 stand, you'd have to— what?— LEAN it against the back wall at your desk and hope it doesn't SLIDE down flat on your desk and snap the connector off?? I like the hardware introduced today, but the cost is just insane. Cue the next person to say, "you're not the target market for this product." (Yeah, okay, but there are plenty of us that would like an expandable system like what was introduced today in the "traditional" Mac Pro price range.)

The iMac is just a novelty and doesn’t work fir my needs and besides I just bought a nice LG monitor.

Joined today. Great indicator. While I think the price is too high (and the stand price is absolutely bonkers), this is a good pro machine. I think the Prosumer desktop is the Mac Mini now. I would like to see a $2,499 to $3,000 version that is more prosumer oriented, but that is unlikely.

That would be the bee’s knees. Unfortunately you will be told that you are not the target market.
