Is there any reason to switch to iOS 11 Apple maps?

I used google maps for awhile when it came out and enjoyed it for what it was. Then I tried google maps and was shocked at how good it was and haven't used Apple maps since. Are there any reasons to switch back to Apple maps when the big update comes?

I see if I open Apple maps now on my phone I still can't arrange my favorite locations or have folders for them. That seems so basic to have. I hope this has changed

Is there something I'm missing or like...how do you organize your favorite places?
 
Everyone that advocates Apple Maps over Google Maps, do you rely on Apple Maps when you need to be somewhere at a specific time? I find that Apple Maps never has an accurate ETA when the route is first entered. With Google Maps it already accounts for delays with delays, traffic, accidents etc.

Does anyone else notice this? I'd love to use Apple Maps exclusively but don't find it as reliable as Google Maps when it comes to efficient routing and accurate ETAs.

I drive with Apple maps and the biggest reason I use it is for the ETA. I’ve found it to be accurate (generally within a minute for me). I often use it even when I know where I’m driving just to check my arrival time.

I have used Apple Maps in iOS 9, then switched to Waze in iOS 10 (tried Google maps too) and still use Waze now. Between Google & Waze, I think the latter's UI is more convenient for driving and I do not want to actively feed Google with my whereabouts. Will be curious to see how AM change in the final release of iOS 11, though.

Unfortunetly, Google owns Waze now, so not sure you can avoid them getting your location now or in the future.

I am aware of that, yet if I want to use bookmarks, etc., Google will want my email address for sinking, etc. Waze has an option to have an account too, but for now you can still remain as an anonymous Wazer without sacrificing much of the app's functionality.

Agreed. I'm shocked at how accurate the ETA is.

To the OP, CarPlay is the reason I use apple maps. It's the best it's ever been in IOS 11

I think it's depends on how much iOS devices in that area. On the other hand , Google use location from android device to calculate ETA so they have much more data than Apple does.

Apple collects data too even if they don't admit it. Google maps will never be outdone because they know how to create gps maps unlike Apple
 
It shows the info in a much better way than Google Maps if you're using public transportation.

What’s the advantage of CarPlay + Apple Maps? I don’t use maps often but when I have to I prefer Waze as it allows real time 3rd person perspective even while not using navigation.

Well, of course they do, with opt out, but it's not their revenue source.
Google earns money with your data, it's simply how their business is build up.
You're their main product! :D

And for the same reason I don't use WhatsApp, Facebook, Google Stuff, etc.

The day Apple goes the privacy invasive Google route, I move to something else, or give that smart* devices completely up. Anyway, I better pass on a few features, than make myself naked to Google.

For right now Apple maps is the only maps that works with CarPlay. CarPlay and Android Auto (Android's equivalent) are interface protocols that allow your car stereo to display information from your phone. I have CarPlay in my truck (aftermarket head unit), it basically makes the touch screen a "display" unit that you can physically control your phone. I have the initial CarPlay, the newest allows wireless connection, mine I have to connect via lightning cable.

You can trick your carplay by opening up apps that are not CarPlay ready, they will run in the background (I do this with SiriusXM), they will not display on the screen, but the audio will play. This will allow someone to run apple maps AND waze/google maps for accident/police info.

I am very happy with Apple maps + Carplay. I haven't looked back at google maps since iOS 9. If I didn't have a CarPlay head unit, I am sure I would still be using google maps. So, I got forced to switch, but I have no complaints since.

Damn...I was wondering about that.

Had rental cars over the past couple of weeks with CarPlay and like the interface and seeing maps on the screen...but trying to access other apps while driving was a chore. I didn't even think of having Waze run in the background on the phone. I still enjoy it for police notifications.
 
Personally, the integration between Apple Maps, Calendar, Mail and Messages is enough for me to use it. An email or message with text in it looking like a meeting with an address gives you the option to create a calendar item with a location that ultimately sends it to Maps with a time to leave, etc. It all works very nicely.

It's still baffling to me why Apple has not acquired the company when it was for sale...The users share interesting data about the roads and the roads are organically updated by a sprawling community of "Wazers". Hell, they could have left it as a separate company, just sucking all the drive and map data into Maps...It's a shame :/

They already were sucking that data into Apple Maps...even after Google purchased them...I only have noticed Waze missing from the latest build.

Ignorance is Bliss.

Seriously. I primarily use Apple Maps and I'm mostly fine with it. But whenever I'm with a friend that uses Google Maps and we both are looking for info then their experience is infinitely better. Directions are more optimized. Information is abundant. Routes are more accurate. Sidetracking stops works. And the overall experience is better. Sadly, "It Just Works... for them".

iOS11 Maps really hasn't improved much. Theres better destination info and now theres lane guides, but other than that then its still playing catch up to a 2015 version of Google Maps. That said, I use Siri so I'm sticking with Apple Maps and following them right off that cliff.
