I have sent my first POI correction to Apple Maps last month. It was corrected within 2 weeks and I live in Switzerland. I was actually amazed about their speed. Previously my corrections were ignored.

Sounds promising, as the error I was talking about is 12 km South-East of Geneva centre in France. I have now resubmitted it again, so let’s see if your speed record holds.

We had a restaurant just open last week near my home...I about had a heart attack when I saw it as a POI. Said it was tied to Yelp though....I think...

Everyone that advocates Apple Maps over Google Maps, do you rely on Apple Maps when you need to be somewhere at a specific time? I find that Apple Maps never has an accurate ETA when the route is first entered. With Google Maps it already accounts for delays with delays, traffic, accidents etc.

Does anyone else notice this? I'd love to use Apple Maps exclusively but don't find it as reliable as Google Maps when it comes to efficient routing and accurate ETAs.

Yes I use Apple Maps regularly and have had no problem with the ETA. In fact --- I have had increasing problems with Google Maps giving incorrect directions.

In fact Apple maps has been able to proactively give me alternative directions when traffic gets bad on my usual roots.

I am not too bothered with Waze or Apple following my driving patterns either, but I would really like the maps to be as accurate as possible when I drive. At the moment Apple falls well behind both Google & Waze in this respect. Apple’s POI database is, again, pathetic. The fact that you have had your corrections taken care of quickly might have something to do with the fact that you are based in the US and me - in France. However, it is not like Google & Waze were French companies either, yet somehow they manage to get it together.

I would really like Apple Maps to succeed and use them as my primary navigation tool, but they are not ready yet.

The funny thing is in Washington DC and NOVA are google maps have had an increasing number of innnacurate directions. I am not sure if this is a localized issue. However, I live in Loudoun County and there is a lot of new home and road construction. Apple Maps has consistently been more accurate than Google Maps. My wife is a Google nut and she now uses Apple maps in lieu of Google maps. She also likes Waze but not because its more accurate but she does like the warning for cops or road emergencies. However, Waze is a battery hog.

Lol @ messaging. Come back to us when they can focus on making ONE app that isn't vapourware and eliminate the redundant ones they have. (I think it's 5 now?)

iMessage kills Google text messaging app. Mail is a push. I used to use Gmail but now use Apple Mail and haven't noticed a lack for anything.

Google maps used to kill Apple Maps but that has been changing a lot and the current version is comparable in accuracy and the UI and functions integrate with the rest of my Apple stuff.

Apple collects data too even if they don't admit it. Google maps will never be outdone because they know how to create gps maps unlike Apple

Can you elaborate on that? I think Apple has put an entire unit to support maps and hence that is why we have seen an increase in its accuracy and functionality. I know Apple uses Tom Tom as foundational data but they have been updating that with their own cars, drones, and data updates.

The moment Apple Maps is as accurate for me as Waze, I will happily switch over, as I actually prefer AM routing algorithm to that of Waze. However, in my case Waze & Google have more accurate road layout than Apple, and this is way more important than anything else, imo. They can go wrong with ETAs, route me around a tree, etc., but I want the navigation tool to have solid maps. Reliable road emergencies reports are also super important. Why can’t we just say: “Hey Siri, there is an accident here!” and it would instantly get sent through the entire Apple mapping system? No need to even touch the phone. The battery in a car is not a problem, as we can easily charge it up on the go.

I drive with Apple maps and the biggest reason I use it is for the ETA. I’ve found it to be accurate (generally within a minute for me). I often use it even when I know where I’m driving just to check my arrival time.
Indeed- much more accurate than my cars built in navigation.

Where are you? I’m assuming not in the US?

I use Garmin for directions, but when I was in st thomas it was useless, waze was the way to go there. Walking directions work well on apple maps when I'm using my watch.

That's a brilliant idea.

Apple, hire this guy! :)

Yeah...I like that idea as well...or the option to simply add a one touch “police” symbol or “car on shoulder” symbol that can be on the screen...maybe in place of speed limit.

Quick touch when you pass...always wanted this in Waze. I wouldn’t mind taking up a small area on the side of the map for a quick button for the alert(s) of my choice.

No no no, first, they should provide all their existing features to rest of the world :p

Unfortunetly, Google owns Waze now, so not sure you can avoid them getting your location now or in the future.

Use Waze while out of the US and there’s a reason they call it Waze because it will take you a different way every time. Great in the US. Horrible elsewhere. At least for me. Then again at least it can be used outside of the US.

Can you elaborate a bit? I had never driven in the US, so cannot compare, but used Waze in many places in Europe and it worked very well. The only area in which Apple maps outsmarts Waze is in its routing suggestions, with Maps usually offering simpler = less hassly routes, while Waze tends taking you strange places just to get you to the end destination one minute faster. However, right now Waze offers unparalleled accuracy of both traffic conditions and current road layouts due to its croud sourcing nature.

I used google maps for awhile when it came out and enjoyed it for what it was. Then I tried google maps and was shocked at how good it was and haven't used Apple maps since. Are there any reasons to switch back to Apple maps when the big update comes?

I see if I open Apple maps now on my phone I still can't arrange my favorite locations or have folders for them. That seems so basic to have. I hope this has changed

You used google maps and then tried google maps? What does that mean?

The key is in his/her phrasing:

a) “I used Google Maps for a while when it came out and enjoyed it for what it was.” - this bit probably refers to when the Google Maps app initially came out for iOS.

b) “Then [later on] I tried Google Maps and was shocked at how good it was” [has developed further compared to the original Google Maps app]

This is how I understood it.

I'm not convinced Apple Maps is as good as Waze, or will reach that point by iOS 11.

There are a few things Google still schools Apple on, IMO:

- Maps
- Mail
- Messaging (across platforms, thanks to browser based messaging)

What does mail and messaging have to do with maps? Do you care that google mines all your interactions with them. Yes, they are evil.

I was going to try Apple maps on CarPlay, but then I put an identical address in Apple maps compared to google maps. The difference was that google maps was actually taking me to my destination and Apple maps wasn't even close. That was enough data to conclude that i won't be using Apple maps in the near future.

For those who want to be able to say - Hey Siri there is an accident here and have it appear to everyone. How many idiots will then say that when there isn't one. Unfortunately, there are many more idiots than we want and that feature would unfortunately be worthless. Same with people who want instant update to maps - people would report false stuff (like that business doesn't exist anymore) and the whole thing would be worse than out of date

I guess no idiots use Waze...

Really? Waze had the ability to crowd-report everything since the beginning. You can have a “freaky report” once in a while, but if it’s not backed up by the rest of the community it will waporise in 10 minutes. Besides, Waze allows you to mark off incorrect/no longer there stuff. Also, a falsely reported accident/situation will just make you more alert, which is a good thing, in a way.

And there is a score and reputation. If someone abuses the system his reports are treated in a less serious way and have less impact on the rest of the community.

I used Apple map regularly in the past 3 years and it is just fine. Being integrated with default apps do has its advantage. So far the only complain I have for the iOS 11 Map is the compass display.
Does any one turn on the compass display on it?? It is sooooooo... ugly and force me to turn off it immediately just for not seeing it.

Here is to say, I like the look of navigation mode in the iOS 6 Map best (I know many of you will laugh). If there weren't horrible POIs info at launch time, it would be a nice app. Actually, it was nice to see some of the visual elements of iOS 6 comes back in iOS 11.

After using iOS 11 for a few weeks, here are my thoughts on the latest iteration of Apple Maps.
  • Lane guidance is an overdue, but welcome, addition. It’s a little different from Google’s implementation in that it only provides lane guidance on highways and not on surface streets. I don’t know if that’s a huge loss as there aren’t too many surface streets around here that allow you to make a turn from more than the leftmost or rightmost lane. But, it is a difference between the two platforms. One thing I think Apple’s lane guidance does better is making sure you’re in the right position to safely exit before you get to the exit itself. On several occasions, I have had it tell me to “stay in the right lane” roughly 1-2 exits before my exit, thus making sure I don’t have to cut across several lanes of traffic. That’s something I don’t think Google maps does and is a nice touch.
  • The speed limit indicator is a great addition. I’ve generally found the speed limit information to be accurate and have been very pleasantly surprised at how quickly the indicator on the map updates after a speed limit changes. Generally it updates on the map within 1-2 seconds after I pass the speed limit sign. Every mapping app should have this standard. I do wish I could get an audio warning if I’m going more than 5 mph over the speed limit (the amount should be user configurable). Hopefully that will be added down the line.
  • I tried DND While Driving but don’t think I’ll be using it in its current form. It’s great that it automatically tells when I’m driving and silences notifications. But, it also prevents me from using my phone when I’m stopped at a light if I need to. The only way to get around it is to tell the phone I’m not driving, at which point DND shuts off, thus defeating the purpose. I want it to silence notification but still allow me to use the phone when I need to. Until that setting is added as an option (right now it’s all or nothing), I don’t think I’ll use it.
  • I don’t particularly care for the new Siri voice. I had been using the British accent voice on iOS 10 and quickly switched back to that after a few days on iOS 11. To me, it sounds more natural even though the new American voice is supposed to be using machine learning. The new voice sounds like a machine trying to sound like a person. There are pauses and different intonations, but they’re just placed in weird spots and the whole thing sounds robotic. I’ll give it another go when iOS 11 is released to the public in the fall to see if it has been further improved. Not that impressed right now though.
  • The lock screen implementation has been kind of bugged in the the last few betas, likely due to the fact that the lock screen has been replaced with this whole new Cover Sheet paradigm (don’t get me started). Generally, the screen doesn’t go back to sleep after a direction if the phone was locked. I’m hoping this is just a bug that will get ironed out in the beta process, as having the screen shut off was one of the best battery saving features of using Apple Maps over another app. Ending a route from the lock screen is also bugged right now, as it forces you to unlock the phone with Touch ID first. Hopefully these issues will get fixed before the public release.
  • Haven’t had the chance to try any indoor maps yet.
  • Apple Maps continues to suffer from the same issues it always has.
    • Searching for POIs within the app is still shockingly bad. I searched for a local business that I already knew basically where it was and it gave me a result 700 miles(!!!) away. Why would that be the top result over a local hit, or even an option at all, unless I specified another city in my search? If you know the actual address, the results are much better.
    • Routing is generally good. However, the road information tends to not be updated as often as Google’s maps. I also find the traffic data to be not quite as good. But, the differences are getting smaller every day and I find Apple Maps to be to the point where I trust it for daily use. Apple is also pretty responsive the few times I have reported issues to them, usually correcting them within a few days. Apple is clearly investing resources into improving their maps, at least in the US. I still keep Google maps on my phone, but I don’t use it often.
    • Options for adding stops mid route are still severely limited compared to Google maps. You still can’t search for a POI and are limited to the suggestions the app gives you.
Overall, I think Apple Maps is to the point where it’s fine for most people in the US. The features in the app are about on par with Google Maps now. Combine that with the deep integration Apple Maps has in iOS and watchOS, along with the fact that Apple doesn’t use your location history to sell ads, and you have a pretty compelling option. The maps themselves still aren’t quite as good as Google’s, but they’re getting better and better.
