The white spot turned up on my 10.5 just under a month after the warranty ended. Apple wouldn’t do anything. When I went to trade it in with my carrier for the 2018 12.9 - otherwise spotless - rather than the £350 they should have given me, I ended up getting a third of that because of a ”screen defect”.

It’s widespread, it should be a scandal. I would strongly advise against people buying the 2017 model because it will go wrong, and resellers know about it (but Apple don’t, apparently...)

Got a good deal on my 10.5 three weeks ago. 64gb was £40 cheaper than a new Air 3. No issues so far. Brand new device manufactured Sep 2018. I will get A/C though to be safe. Love the device. Screen is amazing and pencil with it is great. Would have preferred 256gb but I have 50gb of iCloud storage. Only used 19gb on the device so far. Good luck with yours.

Don't buy this trash.

Apple admitted to me this is a widespread problem (and they won't fix my iPad Pro despite telling me they screwed up).

I bought a used 10.5 a year ago and so far I have not had this problem. I feel bad for the people who have had to deal with it.

Yes there are problems - mine has whitespots right above the home button.. need to bring it to apple and cash in on my apple care. I would not reccomend the 10.5 to anyone... the display is seriously terrible after almost a year.

I got my first 10.5 exchanged after a month because of incredibly noticeable yellow tinting down one side. The replacement worked well until just after warranty, when I noticed the classic white spot above the home button. Brought it into the local Apple store and it was replaced with no issues. I used it happily for another year until I upgraded to the 11”. My parents still use my old 10.5 now and there’s no white spot.

No white spot issues here. I am dubious about how “common” the white spot issue is. The bending issue on the 2018 ones is probably more “common”.

Bought my Pro 10.5 used and no white spot either. I'm quite curious what conditions cause it to develop. Heat perhaps?

For what it's worth, I use my iPad primarily to read - often in the dark. No CPU/GPU heavy activities and brightness is frequently at 0-15% plus reduced white point at night time. Maybe that's why my iPad hasn't been affected thus far.

While I mainly use my 2018 12.9 these days, I've used my 10.5 heavily over the last 2+ years, almost exclusively at 100% brightness and don't have the white spot issue. It's not clear that usage patterns come into play with the problem. I have no doubt that Apple engineering could say what's causing it but they have chosen to be silent on it.

My use case is pretty similar. I do use it during the day but it’s for very light duties such as web browsing, videos and social media. Nothing intensive. I also like to have my devices at low brightness levels.

My 2017 12.9 had 2 bright spots on the left of the screen shortly after 2 years of use. The issue is definitely widespread.

The white spot happens because the screen is de-laminating in that spot and there is a light leakage. People speculate its something to do with the keyboard connector as Apple shifted it to the back on the 2018 Pros and there are no issues there but on the 10.5 and the Air 3 with the side connector the issue rears its ugly head after a year or so.

I picked up mine a few months after launch. 3-4 months of usage later, I started getting multiple white dots at the edges of the screen. Took it in and got it replaced, although the 'Genius' hinted with a smirk that it was due to the iPad being slightly bent from use, but he'll ignore that for now and gave me a replacement.

Well, I got a new case for the replaced model and used it more carefully. Fast forward 8 months and now out of warranty, there is a big fat patch above the home button. It's definitely some kind of design flaw, but Apple probably would not acknowledge it.

The thing is, it's only noticeable at high brightness when viewing white pages such as Safari, Settings etc. Most of the time and now with the dark mode, I don't really notice it much. But, yeah, resale value is probably screwed up. Thanks, Apple!

It is trash though. The white spot makes the display worse than Amazon’s $100 tablets.

I love the hyperbole on this forum. A tiny bright spot on a white background is certainly not taking away the display resolution, wide color gamut, promotion, etc. The Fire tablets are still garbage compared to this even with a tiny bright spot. (that isn't even noticeable on a non-white background)

Bought a 10.5 pro December 2018. White spot appeared now above the home button. I have the Smart Keyboard too. Maybe the continuous pressure from its weight causes this? There is a “suction cup” temporary fix that seems to reduce the issue, so seems pressure related.
No idea if Apple still has replacement units left... will try to replace it anyhow.

By the way, I use this for photo editing due to its great color gamut etc... so kind of a problem with a white spot!

I have the white spot, big and clearly visible on white on pages (invisible on dark backgrounds). It's a widespread issue on the 10.5. It's annoying but doesn't make me hate my 10.5, it's still the ipad I use most and I have 7.... Still it makes me love it less...
It's like having a girlfriend/boyfriend who is otherwise amazing in every respect but has a big stain in her/his face. What do you do? You learn to live with it, you wish it was not there and try to forget it, but it's there
