Other Is Touch ID ever coming back for future iPhones?

I had an iPhone X for 2+ months and still having a hard time adjusting to Face ID. When it works well, the experience is great. You don't even feel like any security mechanism in place. But for the 5-10% of the time that it does not work, it is a frustrating experience. It feels like I am doing a lot of hard work gaining access to my own phone. I understand I might belong to the minority that hates the Face ID since iPhone X devices are selling so well. Anyway, I couldn't take it anymore so I sold it last week and bought an iPhone 8 (my previous phone was a iPhone 6+). I did not go for an iPhone 8+ because I got used to the form factor of iPhone X. My only concern is that in future are we destined to only use FACE ID for all iPhones.

Note: I am also perfectly fine with all other new gestures used on iPhone X. I kind of like it but the unlocking mechanism via the face is just so annoying.
 
I’d say there is a small chance that Apple would release a new “budget” iPhone with Touch ID in the next year or two, but I’d say most likely the 8 series will be the last iPhones with Touch ID.

I do think it will make a return being embedded into the display. Apple doesn't seem like it will be discontinuing touchID on MacBook's any time soon.

That will be really sad to know. In my one week with iPhone 8, I really can appreciate the responsiveness of the Touch ID. Almost 100% success rate. Face ID sometimes feel like I am trying to hack into own phone when it fails. :(

I believe I read that somewhere as well but seems like it is going to be a challenge to do that. and if it is successful, likely it will not be going to be cheap.
 
Apple’s technology roadmap is more or less transparent and predictable, as it’s based on the companies and technologies that they purchase. They bought a company behind Touch ID back in the day. The same way they acquired the company responsible for Face ID. There were zero suggestions that Apple got any other companies responsible for in-glass biometric solutions. They don’t even need it since Face ID is pretty much advanced and they can only improve it from here. Apple is ahead of the competition with their Face ID (3D vs 2D) and they will continue to differentiate themselves in this area. Some other phone vendors have started implementing in-glass biometric solutions and Apple doesn’t need to play catch-up there.

I guess if Touch ID is going to be phased out in future, I can hope Face ID will get more reliable to the extent we should not feel its presence in using the phone.

Totally. They have already improved it in the Xs, as it works faster. I think in future we’ll see less dependence on angles and position (portrait vs landscape).

That's great. Personally i have not tried a Xs so I am not sure how much better is the experience but that is a positive sign forward. In the meantime, I will hold on to my iPhone 8 for another year or two before giving Face ID a try again (probably that is my only option by then). :)
 
Apple is not really a company that resorts back to something once they remove a feature. Tim Cook said ‘Face ID is the future’, which I would expect at least for the next five years Where Face ID will expand to other products, obviously with the iPad and Mac. Could Apple possibly re-introduce a different biometric security feature in the foreseeable future? Yes. But I expect it will be many years from now.

Not to derail the thread, but For example, the 3.5 mm Jack, Apple likely will never bring that back because of the AirPods and they truly believe that the future of wireless is here. (Apple also mentioned the 3.5 Jack was antiquated and taking up valuable space for newer aged iPhones.)

Agree that Face ID is here to stay, just that i wonder if Apple will introduce an alternative option. Of course, that needs to be done without introducing the bezel..

I don’t think that’s going to happen.

I suspect apple will migrate Face ID to the remainder of their product lines by next year.
Perhaps a new monitor with Face ID or a redesigned MacBook Pro with the new 10nm intel processor.

Who knows?

But Touch ID, that’s deprecated technology, along with headphone jacks and floppy drives.

I’m waiting to see if the rumoured removal of 3D Touch has any relation to bringing back under-screen Touch ID - apparently the 3D Touch tech was one of the big issues with implementing a behind the screen solution and I don’t really see any other reason they’d remove 3D Touch just as it’s finally available all across the lineup.
 
I doubt it. Face ID is already better in a lot of ways. There were situations it wouldn’t work as well with my X, but I’ve seen a major improvement on my Max. Version 2 will be even better.

I 100% agree with you. I did the same thing! Returned my Xs and bought an iPhone 8.

Missed Touch ID a lot of I like the “simplicity” of it for only $600. My old $1200 iPhone Xs does the SAME thing as my new current iPhone 8 for half the price...plus I feel like I spent my money wisely too.

It’s a no brainer

In-screen fingerprint sensor will be commonplace in 2019 and after.
