I will be highly irritated if one day I'll have to hover directly over my ipad or lift it up to make sure my face is directly in front of it in a specific distance away from it before I'm able to unlock it.

Seems like the general consensus that Face ID is going to be the only future for iPhones. :)
That's because Apple has said it is.

People want to deny it, to grasp at any straws that might hint that there will be a return. But Apple has declared FaceID as the future. What else is there to argue about when the source itself has said it's dead?

You might as well hope that the headphone jack returns or that Apple puts floppy disk drives back in Macintosh systems. Or any other thing that Apple has removed and buried.

In-screen fingerprint sensor will be commonplace in 2019 and after.
Source?

WRT the 3.5mm jack. I very rarely use this. I don't tend to listen to music at work since I like to be aware of what is going on. I DO have a noise cancelling headset, so I used that with dongle on my recent long plane trip, though I also used the headset to listen to the movies on the plane.

I'm coming from the 7+ to the XS Max and I'm pretty amazed with how the phone unlocks, in complete darkness (some small things amaze me ). When I want to use my 7, I have to "search" for the home button or do some sort of two-hand hold to place my thumb or hold the phone some sort of way to register that "100%" touch. With the face ID, I just simply look at the phone and the little lock symbol turns to unlock.. pretty cool.

I don't think they'll hold onto a more taxing and tedious touch ID. I believe it's a thing of the past.

I really wish not.
I’ve got my XS Max since yesterday, but still I can’t imagine going back to Touch ID, seriously people.
When I still had my 8 Plus, and I happened to read comments like mine, I was a bit incredulous but it just took a few moments, let’s say 10 minutes while setting the phone, to understand the comfort and fluidity that have been achieved with the implementation of the Face ID.

I’m using the Xs. I’ve never used an X though. So maybe Face ID wasn’t as good on the X?

Actually, Face ID was very good on the 2017 iPhone X. But It was variable for some, especially unlocking for certain angles. Remember, if Face ID fails to recognize you, but the match quality is higher than a certain threshold and you immediately follow the failure by entering your passcode, Face ID takes another capture, augments its enrolled Face ID ‘new’ data with the calculated representation through the machine learning process.

Can’t wait to see what the galaxy s10 brings. I’ll be upgrading to that from my X most likely if it has the indisplay finger print sensor. I hate Face ID. And I’ve had my X since late November of last year.

Be prepared to pay iPhone X’s and X’s max prices for the s10.

No idea what Samsung will ultimately do but given the failures that were the s9 and now the note 9 I don’t see the s10 as being the phone some here are hoping it to be.

Touch ID will make a come back like cassette tapes & eight track tapes.

It’s over, we’ve moved on.

Don’t be the guy with an 8 track player or still holding a phone the size of a shoe .

They did explicitly say Face ID is the future, but they never explicitly said Touch ID is dead. Everyone seemed to have glossed over this, but Federighi in one of his interviews added a caveat that there are cases in which multiple forms of biometrics makes sense.

To make a return, I think it would need to be a Gen 3 that is at least as secure (1-in-1,000,000) as FaceID. They'd look like fools if they introduced a security feature that is less secure than what we have today.

I recall that interview. And it caught my attention. Touch ID needs an improvement to be a viable alternative to Face ID. And if they combine them (must pass both Touch and Face ID), they'd need to be way better than today. Near perfect.

Short answer is NO.

Like m0sher said in post #44, “it’s over, we’ve moved on”.

Same goes for 30 pin connector, music jack, 72 pixel per inch screens, owner replaceable batteries, hard push button keyboards, Star Trek style flip phone, the Newton, carriers counting phone call minutes, subsidized phone cost, kids growing up not knowing about hand held computing devices, people interacting with person sitting next to them verbally instead of texting.

Apple generally never admits when something is completely deleted, they just usually remove a feature or products and not always with an explanation behind it. The 3.5 mm Jack was a major deletion for the iPhone, which they did elaborate on during the keynote and post interviews. But most times, Apple is fairly secretive and private when it comes to removing various features. That type of behavior has always been prevalent not just with the iPhone, but throughout the entire product line when they remove various hardware or features.

Touch id is far superior, faster and easier than face ID will ever be. This is one of the reasons I will not upgrade past an iphone 8. The lack of a headphone jack also turned me away from updating phones.

I thought the same thing, and opted for the iPhone 8+ over the iPhone X. This year, I got an iPhone XS Max and realized just how wrong I was. FaceID is fast, secure and reliable. TouchID is NOT easier, faster nor is it "more secure". Time to embrace the new technology.
