I bought the same thing, and opted for the iPhone 8+ over the iPhone X. This year, I got an iPhone XS Max and realized just how wrong I was. FaceID is fast, secure and reliable. TouchID is NOT easier, faster nor is it "more secure". Time to embrace the new technology.

Lets have a test, place your phone on a table facing downward, and we unlock it at the same time picking it up. Guess who will always unlock their phone faster? As soon as I touch the home button reaching for my phone it will be unlocked, yours wont even unlock until you've already lifted it up to your face. Also please check out the tests done on youtube!

Now try it lying under a glass table looking up at the phone. See I can make up rigged test as well.

That test doesn't make sense and is not real world applicable. Even when you do unlock your phone, there is absolutely nothing you can do with it because you wont be able to touch it you will just see a home screen. My scenario is one that happens many times throughout the day. By the time someone reaches for their iphone their finger would have already touched the home button and unlocked the phone easily. As I said please check the videos on youtube and comparisons.

Pointless.....Touch ID is over. Finito, kaput. If you are that pressed for time, set phone to never sleep automatically or turn ID off.

Your test doesn’t make sense either. Leave it face up, look at time you save not turning it over.

I hate Touch ID now on my iPad. It actually annoys me. Can’t wait for new iPad Pro with facial ID and same swipe gestures. If given choice would not go back to home button. My failure rate was much higher with Touch ID. Wet fingers, oils, etc. And Face ID on XS Max is faster than on my X. So happy with that. I could speed up even more if I turned attention off.

I can honestly say I think less about unlocking now with Face ID than I did with Touch ID. Which I liked at the time.

To each there own, but won’t be long there won’t be any units with home button. Apple doesn’t care about some YouTube videos.

How’s your test any real world situation?! First of all - precondition for your test is to keep the phone face down. I’d assume majority keeps their phone on the table with the screen facing up so that they know if there are any notifications or even just to look at the time.

Secondly- you have to pick up the phone to use it and the minute you pick it up, Face ID will unlock the phone, so in terms of practical usage, it’s still not behind Touch ID.

Apple generally never admits when something is completely deleted, they just usually remove a feature or products and not always with an explanation behind it. The 3.5 mm Jack was a major deletion for the iPhone, which they did elaborate on during the keynote and post interviews. But most times, Apple is fairly secretive and private when it comes to removing various features. That type of behavior has always been prevalent not just with the iPhone, but throughout the entire product line when they remove various hardware or features.

I agree. I’m just saying it wasn’t explicitly deleted, as eyoung seemed to be saying it was.

Eh..I can see it returning in some form. Not to replace FaceID. I realize that ship has sailed far, far away from port by now.

But I can see it being embedded into the screen or at the back of the phone as a secondary way to log in and/or use Apple Pay.

I hope so. It is more convenient for me to use TouchID for Apple Pay purchases as the register than using FaceID.

I don't mind either touch id or face id. I just know touch id is faster and some people prefer it over face id. I personally would not like to use face id. I wish they gave us an option on the future phones to use touch or face id. Or had touch id embedded into the screen. I like having options. Thats the thing about iphones, we have no options or say, its either their way or no way.

That's why God gave us Android.

I 100% agree with you. I did the same thing! Returned my Xs and bought an iPhone 8.

Missed Touch ID a lot of I like the “simplicity” of it for only $600. My old $1200 iPhone Xs does the SAME thing as my new current iPhone 8 for half the price...plus I feel like I spent my money wisely too.

It’s a no brainer

My 6 can miraculously send texts, email, and browse the web. Oh and take pics and those occasional voice calls too!

I wonder what will come after FaceID?
I guess something along the lines of Touch ID, as in... when you pick up the phone no matter where on the device you pick it up and hold it, it knows it’s you through repeated learning of your hand prints, not necessarily just your finger prints.

Edit. And hopefully the return of the flat edged iPhones :p

Actually, that’s a valid question. What would be the next for a biometric security (when and if) Face ID is replaced years Ahead. And truthfully, I can’t begin to think what it would be, even though i’m sure there will be some other solution or alternative, that likely will still involve the camera in some form I believe.

Imbedded RF tag at birth along with proximity sensor in phone. Linked to heart rate Apple Watch monitor to check if you still alive prior to unlocking.

Who does that tho? Face ID probably doesn’t even work under a glass table either. And I own an iPhone X and I hate Face ID. I’ve had the phone about 11 months now. Now I’m just waiting to see what the galaxy s10 brings. Hoping for an indisplay finger sensor

The way apple is going they will probably be dead, before the “next security feature”

Touch ID will come back in an enhanced form. FaceID seems good (I don't have an FaceID device), but I can't see how it is a good solution for all Apple devices. For example, while FaceID is an excellent fit for the Mac (screen will always be facing you when unlocking), there are certain use cases where it is not such a good fit for iPhone and iPad (e.g. iPhone in pocket, iPad lying on surface etc).

Of course, Apple won't want to simply copy the fingerprint under display feature of the Android manufacturers so I think we will get a 3rd gen Touch ID (or maybe even rebranded) where the system not only takes a fingerprint, but also imagages the pattern of veins inside the finger (as unique as a fingerprint and prevents spoofing with 'dead' fingerprints) via an NIR light source. This would provide an additional biometric security feature with stronger protection than fingerprint alone and would allow people to secure devices with very secure means - a 3D face map, a fingerprint and a vein pattern.

This isn't going to appear overnight, but probably sometime after 2020 it will start to appear.
