I don't Think we're going to see this until iOS 11. I'm guessing we'll see a change in design again that should allow for more information on the homescreen and lock screen. Maybe OLED will be what enables this change.

How much time do you spend staring at your home screen that it really bothers you that much?

A lot. A comparison would be Android, with widgets installed I could see and scroll through all my emails, text messages, google voice messages, see a live feed of my baby cam, calendar entries, and much more with a SINGLE glance at my home screen. Now please don't let this become an android versus iOS debate, I'm simply putting up a comparison and replying to your question as to how much I spend staring at my home screen. A small bit of this functionality can be represented in Apple's widgets, but nowhere nearly as functional, but my hope is that Apple keeps on improving this.

As for positioning app icons, I would highly welcome this in the absence of having widgets on the home screen. In my opinion a home screen cluttered up with similar looking icons is close to useless. If I could just place my most used 4 or 5 apps on the bottom row, above the dock, with some space between them and the ones above, I'd be happy.

I miss things from jailbreak like 5 icon dock, and the dock which let you swipe for multiple docks. Cool stuff, I hope Apple considers using them. I feel like the dock is underused and needs some love.

I miss my five-column home screen and my five-icon dock. It's just too bad that Infinidock doesn't work well in landscape mode on the Plus models.

I MISS MISS MISS Infinidock so much!!! I don't think it's worked properly in years though, at least the last time I used it in iOS9 it wasn't working well. I'm assuming it's still abandoned? Not that it matters much since we don't have JB anyhow.

I agree, it makes no sense to keep it this way. iOS 10 brought several 3D Touch interactions to the home screen and it definitely allows the user to spend more time on the home screen than within apps. I have not used a 3D Touch iPhone much, but does it work satisfactorily on every part of the screen? I can imagine that it becomes quite awkward to use it comfortably on icons that are out of reach, particularly with one-handed use. I have arranged my home screen in such a way that apps I won’t use as often are positioned at the top, because they are the hardest to get to.

I know you'll never understand it, some folks cannot see beyond their own desires, but this is cosmetic.. nothing more. And, one-handed use? That was why Apple implemented Reachability.

Seriously? How can you not see this as anything other than a cosmetic change? Reachability requires two taps and takes a split-second to activate. A conveniently placed icon is better. Reachability it is also meant for taps only, you cannot use tap & hold while in that mode. Try moving or deleting an app from Reachability. It isn’t possible.

Probably because he/she can't see past his/her own desires to want this to be purely cosmetic

I feel bad that iPads have so much wasted real estate on their home screens. Another column for icons would work well for those devices.

Like I said, some folks cannot see beyond their own desires and will never understand.

actually a great idea - I'd put it priority 5,000,000,000 on this list of important changes
