After spending so much time reading through the negative crap that seems to pervade a lot of the posts here I am happy to report that my new SR MBP Glossy 2.4 GHz is absolutely perfect.
I have none of the yellow tinting problems (just what is normal when viewed from an angle).
The backlighting is even, white, and very bright. (on max, I'm currently running about 2/3rds max) No light bleeding at the edges.
No dead or stuck pixels
Very quiet operation, iStat reports that the fans idle at just under 2000 rpm when doing basic surfing. (can't hear them! I'm amazed at how quiet they are)
The temperature when idle or doing basic surfing, email, etc. seems to hover under 50 C.
The keyboard keys are all even, and the key backlighting works great, and very even in the distribution of the light.
The HDD can't be heard at all.
The DVD drive has a different startup sound (when waking from sleep) then my PB G4 has, but it is not louder or harsher, merely different.
The sleep function is damn near instantaneous, the sleep indicator light comes on immediately upon shutting the lid and the apple logo goes out about a second later which corresponds to when the sleep indicator starts to pulse.
The magsafe connector generates no heat, and has a very firm magnetic grasp.
The power supply module gets warm during operation but does not appear any different than my older unit, kind of warm to the touch but not overly.
The cables on the power supply are of much better quality than my PB G4 power supply cables, the magsafe cable is quiet supple.
The sound is great, and the audio level is great, much louder than my PB. Crystal clear sound, no hiss evident - and I am monitoring the playback through AKG 271 headphones which are meant for studio work. (they are incredibly sensitive). One interesting thing that I've noticed is that the stereo image of the sound when played over the internal speakers has a much better separation than the PB did.
I have not at this point loaded in my DAW software. I'll post back with how it runs compared to the PB sometime next week after I have a small recording session to edit.
Everything seems to run very smoothly and much faster than my PB. (no real surprise considering the raw horsepower difference)
All of the current Software Updates have been downloaded, no issues to report there.
The initial boot and configuration was painless, no problems with network connection, or syncing. (The process took around 50 minutes including the software updates)
The fit and finish are all superb, no problems with warping of the lid, the trackpad button is solid
I'm sure there are more positives lurking under the hood, but right now those are the big ones.
This machine is absolutely amazing! This is now my 8th Mac since my first Apple IIc (which still runs!)
A very Happy Sopranino
(let's hear from other happy owners!)
