After spending so much time reading through the negative crap that seems to pervade a lot of the posts here I am happy to report that my new SR MBP Glossy 2.4 GHz is absolutely perfect.

I have none of the yellow tinting problems (just what is normal when viewed from an angle).

The backlighting is even, white, and very bright. (on max, I'm currently running about 2/3rds max) No light bleeding at the edges.

No dead or stuck pixels

Very quiet operation, iStat reports that the fans idle at just under 2000 rpm when doing basic surfing. (can't hear them! I'm amazed at how quiet they are)

The temperature when idle or doing basic surfing, email, etc. seems to hover under 50 C.

The keyboard keys are all even, and the key backlighting works great, and very even in the distribution of the light.

The HDD can't be heard at all.

The DVD drive has a different startup sound (when waking from sleep) then my PB G4 has, but it is not louder or harsher, merely different.

The sleep function is damn near instantaneous, the sleep indicator light comes on immediately upon shutting the lid and the apple logo goes out about a second later which corresponds to when the sleep indicator starts to pulse.

The magsafe connector generates no heat, and has a very firm magnetic grasp.

The power supply module gets warm during operation but does not appear any different than my older unit, kind of warm to the touch but not overly.

The cables on the power supply are of much better quality than my PB G4 power supply cables, the magsafe cable is quiet supple.

The sound is great, and the audio level is great, much louder than my PB. Crystal clear sound, no hiss evident - and I am monitoring the playback through AKG 271 headphones which are meant for studio work. (they are incredibly sensitive). One interesting thing that I've noticed is that the stereo image of the sound when played over the internal speakers has a much better separation than the PB did.

I have not at this point loaded in my DAW software. I'll post back with how it runs compared to the PB sometime next week after I have a small recording session to edit.

Everything seems to run very smoothly and much faster than my PB. (no real surprise considering the raw horsepower difference)

All of the current Software Updates have been downloaded, no issues to report there.

The initial boot and configuration was painless, no problems with network connection, or syncing. (The process took around 50 minutes including the software updates)

The fit and finish are all superb, no problems with warping of the lid, the trackpad button is solid

I'm sure there are more positives lurking under the hood, but right now those are the big ones.

This machine is absolutely amazing! This is now my 8th Mac since my first Apple IIc (which still runs!)

A very Happy Sopranino :D

(let's hear from other happy owners!)

Just shows that there are perfect MacBook Pros out there, just not many people post about them. I'm happy with my MacBook Pro, I have not had that many problems with it.

have you looked at that test image with the 2 boxes top and bottom from the yellow/gradient thread(page14 i think)? do both white boxes look exactly the same?

If it's not visible during normal usage, then what's the point in testing for it with the boxes?

Congratulations on the immaculate MBP!

Which DAW software are you using on the machine?

I'm currently using Pro Tools with a single core 2.6 Athlon 4000+. I'm wondering what the best way to benchmark between my PC and a MBP would be. I guess running the same mix on both computers and checking the CPU usage :p

It definitely sounds like it was worth the delays!

Hello Jamie.

I have been using Motu's Digital Performer since version 3 came out. Wonderful DAW. As I do a lot of audio wave form editing I have found that DP has the depth and richness in this area to accomplish what I need. Pro Tools is a fantastic DAW as well, I've had an opportunity to work with some very good sound engineers who use Pro Tools and I have to say that they can make that package dance.

I have not yet loaded DP on my new machine. (That project may get accomplished tonight if I can stay awake)

I have also had the privilege of working on a friends system who has Ableton (5?) running. That program is very well put together, unfortunately it is a bit light in the audio editing side for my purposes.

And I have also downloaded, compiled and installed Ardour (An OSS DAW project) Ardour has a lot of great ideas in it but is not at a stage where I would consider using it for a serious recording session.

A little background on myself:

I am primarily a classical vocalist and a vocal teacher. I initially got into recording as a way to study my own voice and techniques and I eventually moved into providing recording facilities for my students to use. This has led to recording live classical ensembles and recitals. (It even manages to provide a bit of money!)

How about yourself?

I got my SR 2.2 a couple weeks ago now, and my experience is exactly the same as the OP. No issues so far at all. :)

As for protools.

Benchmark using as many plug-in's as you can :)

Congratulations for owning the only perfect MBP on the face of the Earth! :)

It is definitely nice, however the kudos go to Apple for their design work. The only Apple that I had (have) that ever gave me any issues was my old PB G4, and at that it was almost into year four when one of the memory slots quit which reduced my memory down to 512 Mb. (That also prompted this purchase) Beyond that one failure, ALL of the other Apples that I've owned have worked flawlessly.

my MBP is perfect. its a C1D but i have no problems aswell.

congratulations, you sure have been reading a lot here, cauz u know where all the errors are with the computer. more people need to post threads like this because many people are getting negative and getting bad ideas on these forums. the laptops arent bad, theyr excellent!!! i doubt under 2% of the laptops made by apple are defective. thats a pretty good ratio by me.

It's so nice to see threads like these as opposed to those "HALP MY <Insert random Apple Product Name here> SUCKS!!! APPLE SUCKS!!!". I too am extremely happy with my MBP though my friend keeps telling me I have the grainy screen issue, I haven't been able to conclusively prove or disprove him. To me, the screen looks fine :D

Anyways, glad for you! Welcome to the perfect machine's club

I did spend a fair amount of time reading up on the latest generation of MBP both before placing my order and while waiting for it to arrive. You are very correct in your statement about people getting bad ideas because of the negative postings. Although I don't have any data supporting a 2% or less defect rate I suspect that you are quite right.

Happy Computing

Nah to me it sounds like you have the 'moany friends' issue. Unfortunetly they are not covered by Apple care.

This machine is absolutely amazing!

A most refreshing review ... enjoy it for years to come. Nothing would please me more than to post a similar glowing assessment once my purchase has been made. Truthfully, I hope for 80 percent of what you described.

I am also happy to report my MPB 17" GLS HD is perfect, i received it yesterday, give it a good looking over and all is well. there is a small delay between closing the lid and it going to sleep, im not sure if it happens every time but its something i picked up on. Is this an issue? and is there a patch?

How long is the delay? If it is within a couple of seconds then no problems. If you are going out to 10 seconds or so then your system is going into 'Safe-Sleep' mode where the computer writes out the system state to disc before going to sleep. (Here again the 10 seconds would be normal for that operation)

I'll take this opportunity to pipe up about my previous-generation MBP. It too is perfect. It *did* have a fault with the DVD drive a couple of months after I got it, but getting it replaced was no hassle (plus they changed it for a different brand of drive which will hopefully not be susceptible to the same issue).
