Wow. A 6G iPod :)

This would be my first Apple product believe it or not.

I have always found problems with previous iPods that pushed me into not buying one, then suddenly I "need" one :\

What I want:
-Touchscreen Widescreen
-Good memory
-Coverflow
-Some WiFi capability

Ok...basically everything I've read in the rumors, lol

Get an iPhone.

Guys, be realistic. Apple isn't going to put a multi-touch screen, 30GB HDD, WiFi, and coverflow into a small package of shoot yourself in the foot.

I think the touchscreen is very unlikely.

well, if this ipod does have internet, more capacities than 8 GB, and has the same touch screen style as an iphone, i will be very disapointed in apple because i bought my iphone thinking it would always be the only product with all these special features. just having it have one special feature (phone) doesnt make it very special.

somehow i dont feel too sorry for you. can you believe some people dont want to spend money every month on a phone contract? especially since they have a phone already?????

I still can't see how removing the click wheel and putting multi-touch on an iPod is shooting themselves in the foot. How can you compared a cell phone, that lets you listen to music and browse the internet with a dedicated music player with at least 4x the storage?

iPods are much easier to sell due to their lack of contract required. Besides, they aren't competing with themselves. If you buy either or, they make money.

1) apple have spent millions developing multitouch. Really, lots and lots of money. From what I've seen, it makes for an amazing interface. They have to have plans for all that R&D other than their new uncertain product.
2) Multitouch it's just the interface, no one has bought the iPhone purely for the interface, it's been bought for the whole package, phone combined with iPod, combined with internet, wrapped up by apple with a nice slick interface.

3) IT'S JUST AN INTERFACE, WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CORE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE DEVICE

4) current ipods don't detract from iPhone sales, why would they? But they've both got video and music and photos built in? Yet they still don't compete with each other? But how could this be?

5) The iPod is now old and in dire need of updating, yet it is still whooping all the competition. But it wont for much longer without a serious revision. Oh look, they happen to have this multitouch technology laying around, they've already developed and paid for it. Should they just leave it alone, or use it.

6) With multitouch, iPod will drive iPhone sales. Millions of people own an iPod, a very small few own an iPhone. When people try out their new multitouch iPod, they will think "wow, this is really nice, maybe I'll take a look at that iPhone"

7) apple tv shows us that apple is looking more towards the content driven hardware sales. They need to have a credible portable video player, to get people to buy more content; when people have more content, they will look more seriously at apple tv. Therefore multitouch large sceen iPod will also drive apple tv sales. The only way to get a credible video player is to make that screen larger, but they need to keep the current unti size the same to keep it portable. A screen taking up the entire front of the unit is the only way to go, discounting a flip open player, which just aint going to happen. The only way to make the video full size is to have touchscreen controls. Or put them on the side or back. I think we can rule out the side option. The back is possible, but I think too many people would have issue with controlling it.

ERGO MULTITOUCH IPODS ON THE 5TH FTW

On this "WIFI iPod eating into iPhone" debate, just a few observations:

1. Of all the technology companies I have ever observed or worked with directly, Apple has been the sole one to never be afraid of launching new products at the "expense" of existing ones. IF you look at other technology companies that have crashed over the years, every one of them fail because of this misguided fear. Vendors never control a marketplace (for long) --- ultimately the buyer does and buyers are not stupid. They know when they are being manipulated and ultimately the vendor trying to do so pays the price..

2. WIFI iPod (with browser like iPhone) would be an internet convenience feature and not a PC replacement.

3. Many people cannot get an iPhone either because AT&T is not available (or does not provide reliable/quality coverage) where they are, or they are still locked into 2-year contracts to other providers, or no provider at all exists (many countries around the world). And, this potential marketplace globally (don't think US only here) is huge --- significantly larger than someone who might choose to but a WIFI iPod instead of an iPhone. iPhone service/availability is not global or pervasive and will not be for quite some time. WIFI internet is though. What better way to tap this marketplace and provide a platform for these users to move up to an iPhone later than with a WIFI iPod (iPhone without the phone).

4. The issue for Apple is profit. If the cost/pricing is right and the profit margin on a WIFI iPod and iPhone of similar capacities is the same, there is no erosion here. And the "upside" for profit by tapping the market outlined above in #3 is huge.

Just my two-cents...for what it's worth...

i already had a phone also. i had to cancel my contract.

i didnt buy the iphone only for a phone. i actually probably would have bought it if it didnt have a phone. it doesnt matter that much anyway, as im saving for this newpod anyway but it just seems silly to me that apple would launch a phoneless iphone

See that is too much of a hassle for me just to get a product (termination feess and then new contract etc). I have noticed I treat my ipod with so much more care than my phone.

So I am in the market that would NEVER consider an iphone (well at the moment) but am always on the lookout for music devices. So in that sense, Apple would not be losing an iphone sale but would gain an ipod sale.

May just be me though

What seems silly to me is that people buy an iPhone, lock themselves into a 2 year monthly phone bill JUST to have a touch wide screen/iPod/Internet Communicator with very limited space!

Even more sillier is to then complain that Apple would be crazy to use same feature set in larger capacity on an iPod with out the phone part on a larger storage device! Especially since iPod put Apple back on track when they were on the brink of a not so bright future.

Seems to me the foremost reason one would buy an iPhone is cause they need a phone and that the iPhone has such a Great interface based on OSX. Then there's the additional feature set. But to me the Phone is the main reason one buys and iPhone.

A multi-touch iPod won't hurt Apple, even if it has wifi. It might hurt iPhone sales, yes, but it is doubtful that it would do that. Apple is in the game for profit. If they feel like they can make more money by putting this on the market than they would by leaving it out, they will release it. I mean, come on. It's a business. I don't think that Apple really cares which one of their products you walk out the door with... they care about the money that you fork over to them before leaving.

Your right.... they don't care whether you buy an iPhone or an iPod... they really only care about the money... i mean they make million's each year... do you honetly think they care about the product you walk away with???

Some people think that if the iPod is very different from the iPhone (No WiFi etc.), some people will buy both the iPod and the iPhone, while if it has WiFi, those people would buy an iPod and not an iPhone, sticking to a cheaper phone :)

with ringos catalouge added im still think that well get the ipods, worldwide iphone release dates, and the beatles catalouge. come on beatles remasters...

Not that I don't have all their stuff, but I think its quite important that 128kbps is not the only option for the Beatles catalogue...

eek, look at that hand, not something apple would use on an ad

edit: the ad with the hand isnt there for me anymore?
