This surely complicates things.

If you're considering upgrading to a newer iPhone in the next few months, make sure it's the 15 Pro (Max) and not the regular 15. Otherwise you'll miss out on a lot of new AI features in iOS 18...
Guess I’m keeping my 12 Pro Max. 😂

This is great news for people who don't care about all this AI nonsense - it means sooner rather than later they'll have to drop prices for the iPhone 15/15 Plus.
The prices will not drop they will just stop being sold in typical apple fashion.

Will likely be able to get some solid deals on places like eBay/Swappa however.

Why can't Apple release a stripped down Apple Intelligence Lite for the iPhone 14 Pro/15? Just include the improved Siri, ChatGPT and the notification summarization? I don't care for the Genmoji or any other features.

Here’s what I think about it: I think Apple Intelligence is very RAM hungry. While the M1 To M3 chips have less powerful neural engines than the A17 Pro, they can still use Apple AI because they have a minimum of 8GB of RAM. The older iPhones don’t have 8GB of RAM, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. RAM is clearly the bottleneck here. Older Intel-based Macs have the RAM, but they lack the smarts, so obviously they can’t run it

An interesting point was made by an analyst on France24. Apple will only be releasing this to about 10% of its user base within the next year or two. They cannot handle more because they don’t have the server power to deal with so many additional queries (even just the ones sent off-phone for privacy-filtered ChatGPT). And the processors needed for a lot of that are so sought after that they are allocated years in advance.

iPhone 14 Pros only have 6GB RAM, so that's almost certainly the unforeseeable limitation that makes on-device AI impossible. On-device AI uses a heap of RAM.

Apple probably regrets not putting the extra 2GB In them now.
Why would Apple have regrets? There a business this AI Feature will be a super cycle for upgraders they gonna sell millions as always. I will be buying more apple 🍎 stock . You folks with Apple 14’s and Older it’s time to upgrade it’s time 😂🤣

What is the difference in hardware that restricts this to the 15 Pro and means it couldn't be used on 13 Pro and 14 Pro? Or is this just Apple withholding it? Not that I need AI particularly anymore than I am able to use it now, but curious on this.

Well they sold me on staying with Apple. I was bound for Android and waiting on the Samsung unpacked event. The AI and the way they implemented it is exactly what I need for my work/home life. I guess i will see what the new phones look like and offer. My birthday is in September so it works out.

Samsung and GooglePixel did exactly the Same skipping s22, a55 and Pixel 8, 7 out of new ai features and others Like Xiaomi or Honor will follow. So what?
In the past very often older devices got the lastest iOS but Not the complete set of new Features.
Nobody was crying.
Now These people who are saying how much they dislike the new AI are the ones who are shooting most against Apple - funny isńt it?

It's also about how much I paid for a device. If it's 500 bucks and it's not fully supported after 2 years it might be fine. If it was 2000 bucks+ as it was for my 14M I expect more.

Based on some of the comments here, this AI nonsense seems to be the holy grail for many people.

Sad time ahead.

Just because you paid a ridiculous amount of money for your phone means it has to support every new feature that comes in the next few years until you upgrade?

It remembers me on people decades ago who Are saying „Internet is only for Freaks , it will Never become Mainstream“… 😂

Siri will get so much better with AI!

May be this Video from Androids Point of view might be helpfull for you.

It simply means I expect more from a device I pay a premium price for. If something is cheap my expectations are less.

Because the on device NPU / Neural Engine doesn't have enough capacity and the phone doesn't have enough RAM to do it.

iPhone 14 Pro -> 17 TOPS + 6Gb RAM

iPhone 15 Pro -> 35 TOPS + 8Gb RAM

My worry is the amount of battery using this crap will consume.

A16's NPU is much faster than the one of the M1. A lot can be done via cloud e.g. image generation.
Edit: IP14P was underpowered with 6GB RAM. Especially for the premium price it should have gotten 8GB.

Apple M1 -> 11 TOPS and runs RAM hungry MacOS.

Time does not stand still. WHO knows whats comes in 2-3 years?
i Admitt that is not satisfying.

But for Samsung s23 or Pixel 7 Pro user it isn‘t so much different.

For example the Support of Android and new functions,
7 Pro User will get their latest update in 2026, 8 Pro User in 2031.

Great for new buyers today, Bad for Eyeryone Else.

Thats the way it goes…

AI might be usable, but it will not be the fastest and the most satisfying experience.
But more ram will compensate this more Than an 14p could do…

"That's the way it goes..." it also changes how I speak to others about apple products. There were times I spoke enthusiastically about those and recommended apple to friends. This changed. A friend was gonna buy a new computer and asked me about a Mac. I told her it might make sense if the apple eco system is important for her and if she is willing to pay a lot of money for a non upgradable machine which might be obsolete soon with future OS releases. She bought a windows machine.

Fine.
I know a lot of people who Are saying the opposite, Never again Windows with such a bunch of Problems and unsecurities and its old Look.

I am using Both and I always buy Macs with more than enough ram and hd-space, so I Never had needs of an Upgrade during the First 5-6 years ( I am no gamer!).

If you need a new CPU, m for Intel for example, you have to buy new Mac.
But selling an old Mac is easy, selling an old windows Pc a financial desaster.

And my i7 13700 Board will not take a new CPU,too, lunar CPU this Fall for example,
i cant Upgrade Like I cant with the 2018 Mac,
I have to buy a new Win-PC when i wish to have new CPU-features.

The only advantgarde would be buying a new graphics Card - but as a no gamer no Point for me.
And Gamers Are not buying Macs…

RAM seems to be the main factor, 15 Pro/15 Pro Max have 8GB RAM, M series Macs and M series iPads also all have a minimum of 8GB RAM.

The standard iPhone 15/15 Plus, 14 Pro/14 Pro Max and down all have less than 8GB RAM and hence they are left out.
