Ok. I fully punted and am returning the M1 MBA and M1 Mini I have been trialing.

I’m having too much Bluetooth weirdness, as others have reported here and there, and a bunch of “not waking my monitor from sleep” that is annoying as hell.

No other Mac, Hack or PC I have has ever had issues with this (the monitor been around here for a decade).

I love the performance and the roadmap of where these Apple will go, but I’m not ready to have issues like these. Way too annoying and constant.

The MBA is great in its own, but I need to dock it all the time and thus these issues are showstoppers.

So close. Just not yet ready for prime time, for me anyhow.

I have zero issues with Magic Mouse 2, AirPods, and Dell U3818DW. Everything works as expected with M1.
That's all modern hardware. I think the OP might be having trouble with some older stuff. From personal experience I know it can be a PITA. I try to match up my older stuff with other older stuff to avoid some issues like this.

great to hear!
Wish I’d been so lucky.

I really really really was into these in terms of performance but I can’t have niggling issues

Do you have a magic trackpad?
That was where most of my Bluetooth issues were - very odd.

I thought maybe it was Big Sur but now I’m not so sure because my hackintosh on Big Sur with the same magic trackpad has no issues at all

All of your issues could easily be caused by Big Sur and therefore nothing to do with M1 stuff.
Give it a chance.
Oh no, you can't because then you can't send them back.

Perhaps time to upgrade? Sometimes retro hardware doesn't play well with modern computers.

This is still a really nice Dell monitor that has no issues with anything else I’ve ever plugged into it.

That said, I would consider upgrading if Apple would make a nice first party display below the XDR. I really want that 5k panel on its own.

Well you gave them a shot and that's what matters. They definitely aren't perfect machines...no system is and these, like all Apple devices and like all electronics, have quirks and annoyances. Hopefully the Bluetooth issues will be addressed with this next Big Sur update, as preliminary feedback sounds really promising.

I wish they would do that too! The XDR is too high end for me. If the Bluetooth issues are with the mini move it closer. The mini has short Bluetooth range. I have an Intel mini so I know.

I do have to say on the M1 MacBooks specifically…

We did a FaceTime call for Christmas.....and oh my God Apple upgrade that damn camera on the front.

That was truly horrific.

One silver lining here is hopefully a big hardware update is coming with maybe the 14 inch model because that 720p front camera has got to die in a fire.

Buy a webcam. Even if they upgrade to 1080P it's still going to suck compared to a real 4K webcam. You can't fit a decent webcam in a thin lid.

I am not paying a premium to Apple and then still having to upgrade things that they should’ve upgraded themselves.

Let’s hold these guys to a higher standard than that please

You bought it knowing the specs. That's like buying a car with a four cylinder engine then returning it because it doesn't have a V-8. Did you have a question with your OP or you just felt the need to let us know you were returning your Apple products? I don't work for Apple or have stock with them so you can buy and return a MacBook every day and it won't hurt my feelings ?

If completely shutting down that hackintosh while trying to use those M1s doesn't fix your issues w/BT, it will be a surprise.

That was not it for me.

My Hack was never once even connected to power (or anything else) while I’ve been testing.
The Mini had taken the physical spot in my desk setup of the Hack and the the Hack was completely removed

(including the nvme Hack boot drive which had been placed in enclosure for data access on the Mini)

What are you getting at though?
I’m interested to hear more of what you may have discovered?

Install 11.2 Beta 1 and your Bluetooth issues should be gone.

thx. Good to hear.

For now I’m going to return and just keep an eye on things.
I don’t want to get back into this until both of the issues I’ve had are confirmed gone.

Its a simple update mate , give it a go ..... you can always return it anyway ..... , so you can actually confirm right now if the problems are gone :) , if not for yourself then do it for society!

Good points, but I'm just not interested in rolling down the beta hole.
Hopefully it's fixed in the final release of the next version.

Not that anyone cares, but my current plan is to wait and grab a preowned M1 Mini base model at some point (have already seen some open-box ones at Best Buy locally for $560-ish for example).

Hopefully by then more software issues will have been fixed.

Ultimately if I'm going to be having any issues/niggles and somewhat "testing for Apple" here, I'd prefer to not have much money on the table while doing it.

The money isn't a primary thing at all - please don't think that - I just feel better about keeping around something to test and see "how it goes" if it was pretty darn cheap to begin with.

I'm also holding out hope that 2021 will finally bring a "non Pro" XDR-ish 5k display from Apple...that perhaps could serve as a great dock/connector to peripherals for an M1/M2 MacBook and/or an M-powered Mini.

Sorry to hear you’ve had so many problems with your Bluetooth, it’s a shame it’s ruining what should be a good experience. But you’re right, you definitely shouldn’t have to put up with it.

So far, on the Bluetooth front, I’ve only used a Magic Keyboard 2, Magic Trackpad 2, Satechi keyboard, Panasonic HiFi, Nimbus game pad and an Xbox One controller with mine. Fortunately I’ve not encountered any issues yet, but those are all fairly recent devices, I’ve yet to try any of my older Bluetooth devices. Time will tell when/if I get around to those.

I hope that if and when you decide to jump back on the Apple Silicon bandwagon, you have a much better experience.

Same here. Base M1 mini with Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad 2, Audioengine HD3 speakers, and ASUS MX34VQ curved ultrawide monitor (3440x1440 @ 100Hz). Everything works perfectly.

All that is using Bluetooth? Other than the monitor I mean
