Jailbreak community dead?

Guys, what has happened to the jailbreak community?

A few years back, we used to have new tweaks coming out on an almost daily basis. But now hardly a thing!

Simple tweaks such as having the phone app start on a specific tab are not being updated. Have people given up?

And the great tweaks such as Lockinfo are now more

There was a series of jailbreaks for iOS 9. And there are jailbreaks for iOS 10 up to 10.2 I believe.

There is always a natural lull in things when you get to the later point versions of an iOS before a new one launches. Most people are comfortable using what they have already.

Once iOS 11 officially launches there will be more activity.

But in any case, there's been more iOS 10 launches of tweaks in the last couple of weeks than there has in some time.

And what I meant was, there don't seem to be as many tweaks as there were on the good old days. Even some of the old useful tweaks aren't being updated for ios 10. To me this seems as though the developers of those tweaks don't seem it's worth the time or the effort (probably for understandable reasons such as family and work comes before spending/wasting time updating tweaks which only a few will use).

Maybe because all jailbreakers moved to Android now that Android phones are better.

And what I meant was, there don't seem to be as many tweaks as there were on the good old days. Even some of the old useful tweaks aren't being updated for ios 10. To me this seems as though the developers of those tweaks don't seem it's worth the time or the effort (probably for understandable reasons such as family and work comes before spending/wasting time updating tweaks which only a few will use).

I think, probably a lot of development has dropped off because either Apple has implemented certain things that no longer make those tweaks relevant or there is less incentive for developers now then there was back then.

In the old days jailbreaking was done by young and wild wizzkids, most of them have now grown up and have moved on in life. Meanwhile Apple implemented more and more sophisticated hurdles.

Combine that with a very lucrative 0day market ranging from corporate to government interest.

Indeed Android is now a viable alternative to Apple, for business reasons I was forced to go to Android myself (Apple go dual-SIM!!!).

There have been some major updates without a jailbreak, let alone a new untethered (public) jailbreak.
Maybe a new one will show up after the iPhone 8 release, but chances are slim I would say.

Regarding the Android/Apple discussion, personally I still like Apple beter as it is more a mature platform whereas Android is more a teenage-like platform.

I tend to agree, iPhone 7 did not bring anything new, Apple watch failed miserably and the last 2 Macbook refreshes where a gimmick (touchbar) and some speed enhancements which are 1 year behind on the competition.

Although I hate Microsoft, their surface book pro is a good crossover between a tablet and a PC.
Apple does not want to go to touchscreens; eats further in the iPad sales.

All in all Apple stopped designing and is now just selling, it is the death of every tech company in the long run.

If anything drives me to Android early next year it won't be because I can't jailbreak. It will be because Apple failed to change the design of the new iPhone or failed to un-fuglify it.

I'm hoping Apple changes it, keeps it in my price range and someone releases a untethered jailbreak.

The Apple Watch has not been a failure, in fact it is leading the market in smartwatches. It has made a colossal splash in a market not really well defined or filled out yet at all.

While I agree that with desktop/laptop hardware, Apple isn't making huge strides in a clear direction, their mobile platform is jumping ahead leaps and bounds in usability.

I am in the same boat. There was talk about a CGM being added to the Apple Watch and I am excited about that. Around here, its hard to find a person NOT wearing an Apple Watch, but that might just be my area.

I think there are several factors contributing to the decline:

• Apple had exponentially ramped up security over the last few years. Jailbreaks are increasingly hard to come by, and have started to rely on things like certificates that the user has to renew periodically. This means jailbreaking is both more difficult and has to be managed more than in the past. You are also much more likely to be stuck on a jailbreakable firmware for long periods of time than in the past.
• Apple has consistently added features. In the old days, jailbreaking was the only way to get basic features like tethering or quick settings toggles. Today, stock iOS has enough features for most people. I’ve found this to be true myself. The last time I was jailbroken was on iOS 8. I did install a few minor tweaks, but spent most of my time themeing my phone. While fun, it ate up a lot of time and didn’t really add anything to the user experience. There just wasn’t much that I wanted from my phone that stock iOS didn’t already provide. Combine that with regular, easy updates on stock firmware and you get an incentive to not jailbreak that is probably good enough for most people.
• The iPhone and it’s users have grown up. This is not in any way to imply that people who jailbreak are childish. But I think that @TriJetHero has a good point here. When the iPhone first came out, I was in college. I had plenty of time to mess with my device, especially since the added features I gained were so numerous in the early version of iOS. Ten years later, I am at a different point in my life. I have a job, am about to get married, and have other hobbies. I just don’t have the time to spend constantly tinkering and managing my phone.

Just my two cent. The cost-benefit simply isn’t there for me any more and I suspect that to be the case for many users and probably more than a few developers. It probably also doesn’t help that there are many quality android phone options as well these days.

I'm just going to argue these two points as they are not reflective of my thinking or situation. I think you're probably correct in MOST cases as you clearly identified, but as often happens, I'm the odd man out.

Point one.

Yes, Apple has added features. But I think that they are appreciated more by those who weren't really inclined to go beyond theming. That is, Apple can add these features and by and large most users are happy with them.

I'm not. There is no way you can tell me that Apple's Quick Reply holds any kind of a candle to BiteSMS. You can't tell me Nightshift is better than f.lux. You can't tell me that a promised 'Dark Mode' is better than Eclipse. In short, Apple implements features it steals from jailbreaks in a half-assed manner. It's acceptable to a large group of it's customers because they have never jailbroken or the ones that have didn't as I said earlier go much beyond theming. In short, and to be blunt - you don't know any better.

As another point - you still can't make a phone call from the lockscreen. Something Callbar still provides under iOS 9 and iOS 10.

Point two.

Lots of people have lives. I do as well. I am married and I have one kid starting high school and one starting fourth grade. I have a full time job. My wife is in school studying to be a teacher. I have hobbies that involve large amounts of time.

I find the time to jailbreak and mess around with things because it's something I want to do. Others place less importance on this than I do and I totally get that. I've always been one to place more importance on certain things others think are either foolish or childish. Roleplaying games for instance. My wife long ago accepted that she wouldn't see me for a few hours on the weekend because I'm playing Dungeons & Dragons or some similar game.

I refuse to abandon those things I like. It doesn't mean I am giving away time with my family or not doing those things expected of me as an employee, father or husband. But I make the time for this stuff because I like it.

As long as things get done…the paper gets out, there is food on the table, the kids/wife are happy…no one cares.

Now, am I normal? Probably not. But I've never been accused of being normal my entire life so I'm used to it by now.

Nah, both devices are still jailbroken on 8.1 and 9.0.2. Sorry.

As usual, nothing in the newer versions of iOS that appeal much to me to want to sacrifice my jailbreak over.

@eyoungren already mentioned that it is a baren market so it is easy to lead, that still leaves it at a failure, which is rare for Apple.

Apple watch has limited functionality and appears to be more a 'must' have for 'Apple-ites' than a global success and game-changer like the iPhone was.
There is a reason Apple still declines to publish actual sales numbers and instead buries it in the wearables heap.

I looked at it, did not like the esthetics (which is personal and non-objective) but also did not see any benefit in features.
I do own and daily wear a smart-watch, just not an iWatch.

To get back on topic, in april Pangu's tethered-JB for 10.3.1 would be released within a week, meanwhile we are at 10.3.3 and no new JB.

It is fair to say the JB-game has slowed to near-death, which is a shame but still true.

It does go to show that people are still passionate about Jailbreaking. But what I meant was the flow of new tweaks and updating of old tweaks has slowed down.

I'm not sure how long this latest Yalu jailbreak has been live for, but after the initial fanfare and hopes of old tweaks being released for Yalu things never really got going. And I fear the same will go for ios11 jailbreak IF it happens. Yes there will be new tweaks for the new features, but I'm not so sure if a lot of the older tweaks will be updated for ios 11 jailbreak.

Unfortunately, jailbreaking is dead. I'm holding onto dear life on my iPad mini ios 8 jailbreak and I've given up on my iPhone 7. If one gets released, I'll be stoked. However, I won't be waiting at the edge of my seat for every iOS update like during the golden years of jailbreaking.
