Why (rhetorical) do people bother to Jailbreak their devices?. I mean SERIOUSLY?. Apple design a lovely clean UI, with simple, attractive icons... and then some Failbreaker comes up with... THIS?!

I can totally understand wanting to unlock an iPhone to use another network, but Jailbreaking just opens the whole device up, in a way it is not supposed to be opened up, exposing it to lagginess, crashing, memory leaks, UI inconsistencies (looks and feels broken) and possibly a lot more I haven't thought of yet.

I once Jailbroke my iPod touch, to see what all the fuss was about... and was disappointed with all the inconsistencies, tbh. I even managed to get root access to iPhone OS terminal, and ERASE THE WHOLE OS!.

That's one person's phone, there are many many ways you can customise the iPhone to make it as you like it, and many apps that Apple won't allow in the App Store that some people need/want.

For example, as my 3GS is jailbroken, I can multitask, and I have a cool theme called Picnic which is actually quite nice.

Absolutely no lag and no decrease in battery life whatsoever (it has improved since 3.1.2, actually). Out of curiosity, when was it that you jailbroke your Touch? Was it a significant amount of time ago?

I personally do not like the inability to multitask on the iPhone. A great phone like this should be able to multitask. That is why I'm planning on jailbreaking my phone.

after you JB'd the first time, did you have to restore to get rid of any bugs or was there "no decrease in battery" instantly after the JB?

Nope. The only time I have ever restored was a few weeks ago when I jumped the gun and assumed that something was wrong with my phone when it suddenly dropped a bunch of calls in a row. It turns out it was an AT&T issue and it hasn't happened since.

Re-jailbreaking went very smoothly as well, though I did have to do a little hunting to find the missing code that allows one to SSH in using a GUI-based program. Dunno why blackra1n didn't include it, but they didn't.

My battery life was never really bad, but it's definitely gotten better since 3.1.2. I know that's not necessarily the experience a lot of people are having, though. Right now I've got an hour and 33 minutes of usage (conference calls and a tiny bit of email/Twitterrific usage) and 13 hours and 4 mins standby and I'm still at 74%.

Let me get this straight. You call it a fail because the screen looks messy to you. Type Apple Fanboy.

Am I going to argue that the screen looks nice and neat. Hell no. I think it looks messy but at the same time it provides a lot more information and choices. Some people like having the extra apps on one screen. It means less wasted space to look pretty.
Apple biggest flaw across the board is they choose form over function time and time again. This shows across the board in everything they make both in hardware and software. They go with looking pretty over over extra functionality and allowing users more chooses on how to customize for what they want to use to fit there needs and wants.

Make the default the pretty forum but give people choose to set up thinks but give people the choose to make changes on how they want to use it.

Couldn't agree more. I held off updating to 3.1.2 (was on 3.0.1) for a long time for that reason. However, now that I've gone through it again, I think it'll be a lot less of a hassle next time (not that I'm gonna jump all over the next update as soon as it's released).

Also, part of Apple's success is the ease of use of the iPhone with their beautiful UI. If it wasn't for Apple's brilliant iPhone UI, it wouldn't be as popular as it is. Apple usually knows what's best for it's customers... it's just something you're going to have to accept. At first I thought the default home screen is boring... then as I started theming, I came to the realization that I couldn't really make it look better... I always ended up making it look worse. I don't think Apple will ever let us put pictures behind our icons because it's very hard to find a picture that compliments the icons instead of making them lost in the background.

I do however think Apple could put some sort of status notifications in the status bar of the iPhone for stuff like new email messages, SMS messages or upcoming calendar events.

For the most part, jailbreaking is tiresome. It takes your mind off of actually using your iPhone and focused more on tinkering, fixing and customizing. That's what it was for me anyway. I was always trying out different things, tweaking things, making modifications, and then fixing stuff I would break by experimenting.

Jailbreaking is the iPhone equivalent of all the fiddling and twiddling assosciated with Linux. We all KNOW there are possible 1,001 ways to do things, but only a few of them are the right way, and then you have to narrow it down even further, and settle on a perfect balance of "HIG" (Apple Human Interface Guidelines).

Visual noise, added complexity, the constantly changing "way to jailbreak firmware X.X" which hardly ever stays consistent. Apple kit is designed to work intuitively, and (usually) flawlessly and without unnecessary intermediate or extranneous steps required.

I am a MASSIVE Apple fan, and if you wish to mindlessly brand me as "fanboy" then quite honestly, go ahead - that is your issue, but Jailbreaking ruins the whole experience of coherency across the device.

Remember folks - this is my personal expression of MY opinion, and I am not expecting you to agree; to resort to the easy option of branding me "fanboy" is a cheap and lazy copout - I don't expect you to agree with me. If any of you are developers, you'll know all too well about memory warnings, [alloc[init]] and ram management - iPhone OS is optimised to ONLY run one app at a time, and this is why all those other "iPhone killer" phones based on Symbian etc, are so laggy and rubbish.

Exactly - JB is for tinkerers and Linux-esque experimenters. I take Apple's design very seriously - it costs them MEGA money, and many years of hard work, with design teams working round the clock. I very much doubt that this same attention to detail is evident in the evolution of JB'd apps and themes - they're just one person's idea of taste, and I doubt that PROPER psychological analytical interaction research, led to their creation.

If the Jailbreakers think they can make something better, then surely they'd be better suited applying to Apple's R&D dept.

I have (or should I say the iPod touch has) converted a friend who was ADAMANT he would never, EVER buy an iPhone, to the iPhone, within 48 hours!. He has wrangled his way through endless Nokias, Sony Ericcsons, and every other "iPhone killer" you could imagine. I remember him swearing in a rage of confusion at iTunes, and promising he would NEVER buy an Apple product because "They're a ripoff and sh*t".

I sold him my 3G iPod touch on Monday, and he came round to my house, and used my Mac mini to work out where he was going worng with iTunes... the look on his face when he saw Leopard UI and HOW easy it is to use, is worth MANY times more than the £100 loss I made selling him the iPod touch (because he is a friend who is broke, and I was in a tight spot, but this is not my point).

Suffice to say, said friend is now desparately looking to sell his SE "Satio", and researching the cheapest way to get hold of a 3GS. He also says he will most likely buy a Mac, at some point in the near future.

Apple obviously know their stuff - he has taken a COMPLETE U-turn within 24 hours, all due to simple, elegant & minimalist efficiency of design.

That's right - keep all the apps free, so the legitimate developers go out of business, and the quality of iPhone OS apps drops.
I suppose you'd have ALL the apps free, so the whole iPhone ecosystem becomes unbalanced, and Apple write it off?.

All of these Apps are offered by the developers themselves for free,
Calling jailbreaking a failbreaking is being ignorant to the fact of so many benefits.
I also forgot to mention QuickReply, where I don't need to stop what I am doing, close it, go into the messaging app to reply. I get a popup with the sms and an option to reply and continue on what I was working.

You said it: the home screen should be useful, just like it is on all the Androids
Having a bunch of icons it's useful at all if you need to click it to see the weather, or your next appointment.

hahahahahahahahahaha n**ga pleeeeease, Apple made more money on the iPhone they they did on anything else. Android 2.0 is very very very competitive with iPhone, I'm thinking of switching to a device that let's me do with it whatever I WANT, not whatever Steve wants me to do with it. As with anything else, I paid for the phone, it's mine, if I decide to switch to T-Mobile why am I not allowed??? AND Android's home screen is actually useful!

Jailbreaking allows people to extend the functionality of their iPhones in ways that Apple refuses to. It allows me to run streaming media in the background, it allows me to store and edit files on my iPhone. It allows me to access information about my phone that Apple would deny me. It allows me to play video formats the iPhone doesn't support. It allows me quickly to access my settings. It allows me to use my phone as a mobile terminal for remote system administration. None of these things has to do with spoiling the pretty interface that Apple has designed, nor do they in any way affect Apple's bottom line. They simply make my iPhone a more fully-functional and useful device.

I jailbroke my original iPhone in the summer of 07, which as I recall, was simply to allow me to add ringtones to it. Didn't touch my 3G, but jailbroke my 3GS just two weeks ago.

Only thing I changed was an SMS alert tone, and added Lockscreen Info. I like the new SMS tone and really enjoy the added info on the lockscreen. I'm not interested in themes (but many are!), but jailbreaking has been awesome to me. I've noticed no lag at all, but it's probably because I haven't messed with much.

For me, right now, this IS the perfect iPhone.
