Hello. I have recently bought an iPhone 4s, used. I was hoping if I should jailbreak it because I don't want to buy any apps, too expensive.. If I could afford to buy apps I would've bought a new one. So the only thing that restricts me from jailbreaking is bricking. So I wanted to ask you all, what are the odds that I'm going to brick my phone to death that it wouldn't ever turn on (that's what I'm affraid of, as I don't have any apple store near me and warranty is expired I guess, as I bought it without any documentation. So, is there any change that I could brick my iPhone by simply jailbreaking it or installing apps? I have heard a few times that after you intall an app phone stays normal for a day and then bricks, they take it to apple store and they replace it, but I cannot do that, so if I brick my iPhone, will I be able to restore it? Some tell that you cannot brick iPhone 4s to death, some say that it's very easy to brick it. iOS version 5.1.1 and I don't think to update it as I have heard bad opinions about 6.1, plus gevey card for 6.1 is rather expensive. What jailbreak should I use and please give me a guide. Also, will it be safe to do jailbreak with a fake iPhone cable, chineese one for a dollar I think. Thanks.

So you are asking for jailbreak advice because you want to steal apps that cost money? Do you have an example? Sounds like charging the phone is going to put you over budget on your electric bill. You might want to sell the phone and get a pre-paid phone.

It is very hard to really brick an iphone, mainly because of the software design by apple which protects you from bricking. Ofcourse a hardware fault can brick it. You might get stuck in a boot loop, but the jailbreak nowadays lets you start uo in safe mode easily so you can remove the odd tweak casuing a problem.

Jailbreaking is safe as long as you don't random start installing apps and tweaks without checking if it is compatible with your ios version.

Most tweaks and apps for 5.1.1 are very stable.
iOS 6.1.2 is the latest version and is just as good as 5.1.1, i would recommend upgrading to 6.1.2 and than jailbreak it.

If you want to stay on 5.1.1 redsn0w 09.15b3 is your jailbreak tool.
For 6.1.2 use evasi0n tool.

Yeah, but that's not that I'm asking. :(

Quoted from OP:

Sounds like you can't afford paid apps? Now I'm not sure how you were able to afford an iPhone (used or not) if you can't afford $0.99, but I'm not one to judge- the solution is to simply use some of the hundreds of thousands of free apps available, not to steal them.

I got your point and that was not exactly what I wanted to say, I didn't mean to say stealing apps, just nevermind me. I wanted to say that there are custom apps..
Anyways, is there a way to preserve baseband version 2.0.12? I heard that it's possible to preserve i4 baseband, what about i4s?

And is there a way to unlock the newest version without R-Sim, gevey or x-sim. Also, which is better, R-SIM, Gevey or X-Sim?

No unlocks for the 4S anyway and i doubt there will be another unlock method as it is now illegal in the USA to unlock.

You can try an IMEI unlock online for the carrier it is tied to.

Err.. I'm not from USA, I'm from Lithuania and IMEI unlock is very expensive service in here, I would pay 1/3 of the whole phone cost for unlocking it. I prefer using gevey or r-sim..

cost do indeed vary, some country (including USA) are cheap and some are expensive.

so stay on 5.1.1 and jailbreak with redsn0w

Yeah, is it able to unlock it without gevey if I use 5.1.1. Also, I got stuck on 95% charge, I got restarted the phone, it said 98, then I restarted and it was 94% Restarted it once more, it's now stuck on 99%, is there anything I can do about it?

Dont worry so much about the battery percentage indicator wether its up or down 1-2%.
Let the iphone completelly discharge till it shuts off then charge fully overnight.
See if that calibrates the battery.

Yeah man, hook me up with FREE APPS! I just got this $650 toy and $2,000 cellular contract, but I'm far too poor to pay a developer 99¢ for his hard work!!!

I got this device so I can rip off those who make using this device worthwhile!

is it worth updating it to 6.1.2? I'm now on 5.1.1 and the battery is fine, holds me a day or so. I have heard that battery life sucks on 6.1.2 is this right? If it is, I'll rather stay on 5.1.1.
Also, if I do factory reset and my phone is jailbroken, will it brick or will ir remove my jailbreak, also, will it stay on 5.1.1 or will it update to 6.1.2? Is there a way to hide that there's a notification for an apple update in the settings?

I'm running 6.1.2 and it seems fine, but my battery life has always been pretty consistent at 1 day. I've noticed that I may have taken a little hit since jailbreaking, but I have also been using my phone more, so that is most likely the culprit.

If you try to do a factory reset, it will remove your jailbreak and probably cause other issues. The best way to update to 6.1.2 is put your phone in DFU mode and use iTunes to install a fresh copy of iOS.

I don't know. A lot of people says that 5.1.1 was better at battery life, I'll probably stay with it. Now the question is, I don't know if the phone is jailbroken, how can I factory restore it without harming it?

How exactly are you unsure if it is jailbroken? Does it have Cydia or any tweaks installed?

No, nothing at all, I bought the phone used. I noticed that there are all emails showing up through search and approximately 1,2gb is wasted out of 13,6, also I found some links about jailbreaking both on youtube app and safari, so I don't know, maybe it was jailbroken and cydia app was hidden or something, as I had iphone 4 with deleted cydia, but jailbroken.

If you click the erase all content on the phone settings/general/reset then your phone will be stuck on the apple screen and you will need to restore it to the latest firmware.

How can I erase all data completely without updating it to 6.1.2 which freaks me out because of rumors about it's battery life.
