would you suggest me update it to 6.1.2? Some people are saying that it improved their battery life and some say that it even got worse. What does this depend on?

You heard wrong, no problems with battery life on 6.1.2

If Cydia is not installed most probably it isn't jailbroken.
Than you can do the erase all settings and content.

You will have a clean phone.

On a 4S I think you will be fine with 6.1.2. It has plenty of horsepower to run 6.1.2 and battery life averages different for everyone. Not everyone has battery issues like you heard and most I know are happy with their 4S on the latest firmware.

Oh and which runs better and achieves better performance on i4s, 5.1.1 or 6.1.2?

You can add me to the "happy with their 4S on the latest firmware" group! :)

My opinion, use 6.1.2. 5.1.1 was one of the most stable jailbreaks ever and for me, 6.1.2 is shaping up to be about the same except you get the added bonus of being on the latest firmware. Outside of the NCSettings issue (which is EASILY fixed by installing version 1.6.2) and the winterboard issue, everything is great. No complaints at all. But then again, I don't use winterboard. Maybe that's a deal breaker for you. Having said that, I'm confident an update will be released soon to fix winterboard. On top of that, apple will release the next firmware soon so you need to make a decision. Once it comes out and the window closes you won't be able to install and jailbreak 6.1.2. On the flip side, with 5.1.1 you have the ability to re-restore and re-jailbreak whenever you want (assuming you meet the necessary requirements). Good luck!

So you're telling me to upgrade? How about gaming performance? Is there any difference?

I would suggest you do so. Make sure you upgrade via iTunes and not OTA because there's a chance a tool will come out which will allow re-restores. Not definite but its possible. I feel like my phone has better performance on 6.1.2. Safari is noticeably snappier and overall a much better experience. I hardly ever close backgrounded apps and I have never used any tool to free memory. My battery is as good, maybe slightly better than, iOS 5.1.1. Backgrounded apps open a bit faster too. But I have a rigid routine whenever I restore. It has never failed me and might contribute to why I rarely have jailbreak related issues. Everyone's mileage will vary of course but there are so many variables its hard to say with confidence what your experience will be. Im just giving you mine. Others might be the complete opposite.

What is it with the million questions dude? You act like you're buying a house. Its just a firmware update.
If you want do it, if not dont.

Lol plus there's just no telling what someone will do during the backup and restore process nor can you factor in what that person will do once they upgrade. ie installing anything and everything, pirated software, "tweaking" files in iFile, theming without winterboard, etc etc. It's so hard to answer these types of questions because the outcome could be any of a million different scenarios.

yeah, but when you update it, you can't go back even if you don't like it, but i'll give it a try.

True, but once the current iOS and associated jailbreak is relatively stable for users (such as 6.1.2 and evasi0n 1.5 is now), there's little reason NOT to be running the latest iOS, with the exception if its an older generation iPhone that might be a little underpowered.

But as has been mentioned already, an iPhone 4S has more than enough horsepower to run iOS6 features.

Well said. From my personal experience, the 4S feels more powerful and faster on iOS 6.1.2 than 5.1.1 felt. Don't you think Apple wants to make their products better so therefore its unlikely they'll make the first major iOS upgrade bog down a device that's only 1 device removed from the current gen?

Right, so I updated it, and restored to factory settings. Now it asks me to activate it, however the phone is blocked and I don't have o2 SIM to activate it. How can I activate the other way? iPhone 4s 6.1.2.

This didn't work for me. 112 answered and asked me twice if there's anyone on the phone. is there anything i can do to activate it, also will o2 card activate it if the phone is blocked?

I haven't had a phone with a sim card, but if you explain whats wrong I can try to help.

I don't quite know what you mean by "activate"

Sounds to me like OP wants to put stolen apps on a stolen phone. If you are asking about gaming performance and jailbreaking, then it's likely you are looking to steal game apps. People who help him are just helping to make theft of apps and devices easier and more acceptable.

Since the device wasn't wiped when you "bought it," the right thing to do is figure out who the owner is and return it. That's my advice for your problem.

IF IT IS STOLEN PLEASE DO RETURN IT!

Though, I wouldn't jump to conclusions like that. They're from another country, and very well could have bought the phone from a person they know, a site like craigslist (maybe the seller didn't know how to wipe the phone?) ect. I know most people in the U.S and usually the U.K will reset a phone before selling it. It is also possible they bought it, and the person selling it stole it, in which case I'd try and return it then too.

Although they DID ask about pirated apps (which is SOOO EASY to figure out just by googling it), which I wont mention here since I like to try and support people who develop apps so that I can have more, I'd like to at least know the whole story before just shutting someone down and refusing to help them.

OP, I think providing:

How did you came to getting the phone:
What iOS is it on now:
What carrier do you have?:
Is it Jailbroken (I think you said you reset it?):

Usually, if you plug a phone into your computer, go to itunes, hit restore *AS NEW* it'll reset the phone, regardless of jailbreak/apps. It'll delete EVERYTHING (photos, numbers, texts, apps)

or, in the phone itself you can go to:
settings
general
reset

and this will put the phone back to default and delete everything.

From there, you can re-jailbreak if you want to.

I don't know about unlocking a phone (to use a *example* verison phone with a sprint carrier ect) so I can't help with that at all. I think telling us a bit about how you got it/what you want to do might put people at ease regarding helping you :)

2 thousand questions before and you never said anything about the phone being locked and you not having a sim to activate it after you update:D You always need to activate after a restore.
Only option would be to find or buy an 02 sim in order to activate it.
