It’s all opinions. IMHO something is rotten at Apple. Often is. Take a look at their macOS releases and their stability. I could be wrong. I’ve been wrong many times before. I hope I am wrong and that this was a good move for them.
To be fair, they are maneuvering an unprecedented transition, during a global pandemic. Also the chip team and OS/software team are not the same thing. That being said, we simply have no idea why this man left or what his impact will be. We do know that there are several key players still at apple, like Srouji, who didn’t leave Apple even after he was offered the CEO position of Intel, and Sri who is a key player in all Apple silicon, among many others.

These articles saying this one dude is responsible for the apple silicon transition are exaggerated and dramatic. In reality no one person is responsible for this, and Apple has many engineers on their team who are all extremely smart and talented.

Aside from number of cores, perhaps the only thing substantially different in M1 from the A14 it's derived from is Unified Memory.
If the article said that, the writer is quite confused. A14 and M1 both use unified memory.

Saw this article. What’s really happening at Apple?

This kinda stuff happens all the time. Iirc people were sppoked when a bunch of ex-Apple people left to form Nuvia.

I’m gonna predict that you’re wrong. The biggest revolt at Apple is the wfh controversy and that seems like a relatively minor deal.

Besides, Apple makes sure that each team is highly compartmentalized for corporate espionage reasons. Their hardware team have been delivering hits, and while newer MacOS releases have been buggy at times, there haven’t been exoduses of their software teams.

In all honesty, Intel probably drove a truck full of money up to this guy’s door and dumped it on his lawn. Gelsinger’s M.O. seems to be to play really aggressively. And Apple doesn’t pay more than the average salary in general.

And I think we’re ignoring a big part of this, is he going to work on ARM or x86 processors?

Because if he has to try and make x86 processors that are as efficient as ASi, then he’s gonna have an uphill battle.

This can’t be good. Something is rotten.

Something smells like… money. Intel is throwing it.
