Prior to Apollo shutting down, not only did I waive my right to a refund, but I also used the opportunity to slip him a couple more donations.

He took the time and effort to build a functional YouTube app for the Vision Pro at a time when the parent company (and many other developers) wouldn’t. He was there for each and every Vision Pro user at a time when many a developer was content to play out their petty little rebellion and neglect said platform.

You want to encourage and reward this sort of behaviour.

To every member here who has purchased his app, I call on each and every one of you to continue to support him financially in his future endeavours. $5 is practically couch change in this day and age.

Heck, give the man a medal!
I swear almost ever post you write I find myself nodding in agreement.

Christian plugged a hole missing in the Vision Pro lineup AND charged a reasonable amount for it. Some people here are ridiculous.

Right? Just Breathtaking. Steve Huffman comes into the MacRumors comments getting all salty.

A well deserved shutdown.

I recommend everyone filing for a refund before time runs out. I suspect Christian knew this was going to get shutdown so he did a quick cash grab, hoping people will just not notice as time goes on.

Christian has done nothing but ride the success of other companies and complains when other companies want to control their own service. If Christian doesn't like it, he should build his own service instead of abusing others.

Good riddance...
It would make sense if Google had made their own native Youtube client. But they haven't.

Apollo was operating within the terms of Reddit’s API before they changed it and demanded compliance from all third party app developers in an unrealistic/unreasonable amount of time.

And if I ran a service where a third party app improved the experience so much that its popularity began to stave off my ad revenue, I would look INWARD to see how I can make my user experience better, not change the cost of my API from $0 to $1M a year and double down on intrusive ads. But that’s just me.

I pay for YouTube premium, and Juno screens ads as per the user’s YouTube settings.

Christian is stealing nothing. If anything, he is increasing usage of YouTube on a platform where even the parent company can’t be bothered to release an app for it.

Unless your idea of “stealing” entails the user paying a monthly fee for YouTube premium and then not being able to do anything with it.

As for Reddit, when Apollo died, so did my usage of said site (including visiting it on my laptop). And maybe the CEO of Reddit doesn’t care for my patronage. Either way, it’s their loss, not mine.

It’s the classic take your ball and go home move. That way they can still play victim and squash out anyone trying to fill the void. Coming from the same entity that routinely unsubscribes people from channels they don’t want succeeding it is not entirely surprising.

He’s stealing platform customers away from eventual Google AR products.
That’s like someone that leaves their blinker on while driving down the freeway right? Surely they will eventually make a left turn into the retaining wall! Let’s just be patient while that timeline reaches zero

Since when can Reddit not change their policies?

Reddit can demand $1m from all developers if they wanted to. Your choice is to pay or to shut it down.

If it's unreasonable amount of time, remove from the App Store until you can work it out.

Remember this the next time you complain about more ads on Youtube.

Oh hell naw

I don’t see any ads though? What’s the point here Steve?

hope that helps.

I guess none of that matters for premium subscribers lol

He did reach a little close to the sun with the logo, but to be fair, there was a video player for Vision Pro called Cinemax. It's since changed its name to Cineplex and is actually quite good - the theatre environment is on par with the one in Apple TV.

There's a whole cottage industry of unofficial apps trying to monetize services that aren't native to the platform. I've used Juno. My biggest complaint is that the Metal FX Upscaler for VR YouTube videos runs at like 7fps. Makes you wonder how much emphasis there is on product quality as opposed to App Store conversion.

Given the opportunity to make the user experience worse, Google will take it 11 times out of 10.
Google’s in the process of nerfing Waze to make it as bad as Google Maps. Rather than adding on-device routing to Maps for CarPlay & Android Auto, they removed it from Waze last year. The end result is more-difficult & dangerous to use vehicle display routing instead. That moved it of reach for some people, and anyone with a jog-dial interface now plays hell trying to use it.

Their beta program is worthless as well. They don’t really care about resolving most issues, or implement tester suggestions. Everything is now driven by marketing wonks who don’t actually use either product.

This is precisely the sort of thinking that led to Google crippling Google maps for iOS, which in turn led to Apple developing their own mapping service, thus booting Google maps as the preinstalled default on what could have been over a billion active iOS devices by now.

In the end, the only loser was Google themselves who lost out on all the user data. And probably why Google is willing to pay Apple $20 billion to keep Google search the default in safari. I like to think that part of this decision was due to the “trauma” Google execs still suffer from said misstep.

Google’s revenue comes from people using their services, not how many people are on their android platform. If I were Google, I would see to it that my services (and apps) are optimised for as many platforms as possible, because that’s what results in the maximum amount of revenue.

Intentionally crippling their offerings on Apple hardware benefits nobody save for Apple haters and / or android fanboys with an axe to grind.

When did anyone say Reddit can’t change their policies? My last post was in response to your continued claim that Christian is only riding the success of other companies. He simply used the API Reddit provided, within the terms of its use. He charged for his application because developing the app cost his time.

Your defense of these anti-user/pro-profit multi-billion dollar corporations is admirable. Maybe you should take a page from Christian’s book and charge them for all the time you spend defending their crappy decisions that make use of their products worse. But hey, when you have the market cornered and the next best thing is no where close to a threat, screw the users. Those investors need to see growth!!!

Reddit certainly has the right to.

Which is why I said that I didn’t (and still don’t) blame Christian Selig for shutting down his Apollo app when he did. I paid for lifetime access, I still tipped from time to time, it gave me years of a great user experience for Reddit, and rarely has there been a developer that engendered such trust and support from me.

May he continue to prosper. 🙂
