It's very nice ... but I have to admit ... It's waaaaaayyyyyyyy tooooooo heavy.

What in the world is making it so heavy over my 2016 MB Pro 15.4" ????

I might have to return it and get the lame 14 inch. :(

Your 16” MacBook Pro weighs 0.68 lbs more than the 2016 machine. More than likely, it’s all battery. The 2016 MBP had a 76 watt hour battery, and the 2021 MBP has a 99.6 watt hour battery.

The weight of the 16" is 4.7lbs while the 14" is 3.5lbs.

The 16" is perfect for home but not good for taking to starbucks.

Meh… the 14 inch isn’t that lame, and you CAN take it to Starbucks😉 ☕️💻

Yep, its large and in the scheme of things heavy. Not heavy that I cannot lift it, but heavy and large enough that traveling with the 16" is not as enjoyable as something smaller.

I did that, and there's a lot of positives to going with the 14" but I'll give you one large negative - Screen size. I find myself with my old weak eyes struggling with the smaller screen. I've had to boost the scaling, and this is why I buy 15" laptops.

Food for thought, how often is the laptop in your bag as move to location to location? If its not that much, then keep it, if you're a travel warrior and are at airports, coffee shops, or commuting into work, then the 14" would be a better option

I think the 14 screen size is the best for traveling with , it's also the smallest size I would buy due to my aging eyes ...15.6 and larger begin to feel bulky lugging them around alot .

I was traveling a lot more this year and as such the 14" made more sense, but things change and I don't need a smaller form factor. I'm trying to see if I can justify the 16". I'll have to sell the 14" which I'll do, but I need to get off the snide

The weight of the 16" is 4.7lbs while the 14" is 3.5lbs.

The 16" is perfect for home but not good for taking to starbucks.

You do realize here that you were complaining about the weight of the 16" compared to the 15" from 2016, and found out that it was barely .6 pounds heavier, then you compare it to the 14", which further defeats your rant on the weight.

But if you're looking for portability, then everyone has already had that conversation ad infinitum in various threads about it here. If you want portability, go for the 14", but there are so gives and takes with the 14" outside of just screen size (fan noise under load is a common example). That has been argued as well. That said, the 16" is portable; I've taken it on a few flights with me (though I don't pull it out on flights), and have had little problem with it. But if I'm going to Starbucks to do work on my Mac, there is no difference between someone doing that work at home and doing it out, outside of getting coffee and sharing WiFi with everyone else there.

Weight is negligible for what you're getting; I came from a mid-2011 13" MBA, which is .54lbs lighter than the 16" M1 Pro MBP, so I was expecting it to be heavier, because it is a Pro. But if weight is an issue, return it and get the 14". Just be aware of what you are compromising by doing it, especially if you go with any Pro Max configuration.

I just got the 16. Honestly I was hoping that it would be big and heavy. it is really portable and looking at this screen I could not live with a 14 just because of weight savings. I have a good backpack that I use daily and go to classes with. I can work with two word documents side by side and not feel strained, it's just so much better.

However if one is the kind of person that uses the computer for 15/30 minutes and then moves all day long I would maybe consider the 14. But boy, I installed Ventura, all apps, zoom calls, Safari 12 tabs, VSC, Keynote and I haven't noticed the fans kicking, always at 0rpm. Maybe it's defective? 😂 No, I don't do video or image processing in any way.

I saw a video on Youtube of someone using it for video. Bought the 16, regretted the size, switched to 14 and then BAM! back to 16. You can't beat this screen size and trackpad. In the end computers are for working, and in this regard it just rocks.

My 2c.

I got the 16' earlier this year after many years of 13' MBPs. Yes, the laptop is bigger, heavier, but THAT SCREEN ... WOW. That performance without a whisper of fan noise? WOW. Best computing device I've used in my life (I played on a KayPro as a kid).

I use a 13' MBP now and it just seems like I'm using something too tiny.

Remember, grass is always greener on the other side. I've kept my 16' MBP now since April and I don't regret it. I could never give up that screen space. I could look at that screen forever.

My wife loves her 14' MBP. She doesn't work at home like me and finds the portability amazing. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous. That is also a great laptop.

4.7 pounds is too heavy.

🙄

Unless it's dangling from a body piercing, I'd love to hear a reasonable explanation as to how 4.7 lbs of anything is objectively too heavy to carry - especially in a backpack - while something 3.5 lbs is not. (weights as per apple.com)

Good grief, an extra 1.2 lbs can be the result of some indulgent holiday dining.

After carrying all varieties of (vastly inferior) laptops in the late 90s and all through the 2000s, I can say that 4.7 lbs is not too heavy for any laptop in a briefcase or backpack, especially for what it is, outside of a severely unhealthy physical state.

I fear for this future of this generation.

im 47 years old

Im trying to get used to it, I think 4lbs is the cutoff for weight for any laptop, also the 16" is much thicker than my 2016 15" so it might be part of the issue. My 15" feels like a paperweight, my 16" feels like a 5lb dumbbell.

It's heavy.

When I was at my last job, people used to ask me what to get for their laptop. They're not hardcore developers or anything, and so I usually would suggest a light ultrabook. On more than one occasion they'd listen to their teenage sons and get a big laptop with a huge screen and lots of POWAAA. Cuz, their sons would say, what's an extra pound or two? Well, invariably within a year or two, they'd buy a light ultrabook... because 5 lbs is too heavy.

I guess the good news is their sons would get that laptop for their bedrooms as a hand-me-down. Curiously though, it never was a daughter. Always a son that would be the one recommending the huge laptops.

I'm a year older than you. This isn't heavy, especially if it is barely .5lbs heavier than a MBA. I have a HP ProBook that I have to use for work, and it is heavier than the 16" MBA.

numbers are actually different than real world experience. ill go back to best buy and feel the 14"

if its too small then I'll just keep the 16"

it is what it is

And I’m a fair bit older than that. SFW. 4.7 lbs is still not heavy, especially - as I’ve stated - in a backpack, like one might wear to get that coffee shop computing accomplished. And no one has yet explained how 4.7 lbs is arbitrarily heavy while 3.5 isn’t.

I suppose then, the concern shouldn’t be limited to a generation, but more to a lifestyle in which some measure of enjoyment is so so sensitive to effort.

When I was shopping for laptops (ultimately got the iPad Pro) I was torn between the 14 and 16. But I was only looking at the sale prices online. So I figured time to actually see these things in person. I was leaning into the 16 because I figured, as most do, what’s an extra few lbs. 3 seconds holding the 16 and I knew it was wrong for me. I felt like I MUST be tied to a desk to use it. Essentially it would feel like a portable iMac, and that just isn’t feasible. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a beautiful machine. But I knew right then and there a 14 would be better because I tend to take these things out to coffee shops etc. The 16 would simply be an “at home only“ machine. Which I always found ironic for a laptop.

I have a 16" and use it for when I need to work away from the office.

The screen is incredible, so is the sound system but if I had to take it with me every day it would be too heavy and I'd go with the 14" or maybe the MB Air.

Edit: I forgot to mention the battery life of the 16" is phenomenal.

Get the 14!

I hope they maintain this thermal envelope for the 16, it’s the first apple computer that I really like and I’ve used them since 2008. Good battery, doesn’t sound like an overheated jet engine when you do my work on it.

get 14, and if you cannot bear that super extreme difference in weight, get some dumbells and workout a bit, because its not normal that such a small difference in weight is causing you that kind of problems
