you're comparing apples to oranges

1) why do you need all that tech and battery charger for browsing in restaurant

2) lets say you have all that tech with you, so with 14'' full backpack is 20lbs, but the moment you have 16" and backpack is 21.3lbs that weight become unbearable to the point you cannot take it anymore, am I right?
LOL when I was frequently flying could be easily over 40lbs in the backpack between two notebooks, phones, cables, chargers, batteries and sometimes with a messenger bag with another 20lbs.

Totally good point as the extra 1.3lbs could probably be saved elsewhere. I would pack and repack to balance the weight versus the airlines/country's restrictions to attempt to keep the weight down...

Key was a good backpack not worrying about the weight as it had to go with me one way or the other. You either opt for your own redundancy or roll the dice. Either way clients are not interested and just want the job done. Your computer goes down you can expect 24 hours leeway at best...

I must say the 16 seems worth its weight however. It is not that heavy.. and nothing is nicer. In coffee shops here PLENTY of people have 15-16" in fact, it seems like the majority - I think the sweet combo is 16" + 12.9" iPad for travel + PC if needed.

When I travelled more, I used to carry a lot of gear, maybe not 40lbs worth, but a lot. I had a really good backpack and it held everything nicely, but at some point lugging that around, even just in airports, got old.

Every lbs does count, and I worked at shaving every pound I could. I found for my personal experience I could do without for a number of things. Do I really need a tablet, and laptop? Do I really need battery backups, or a large camera with a number of lenses? I'm more of a minimalist now and while my traveling has decreased I still carry that mentality.

Yep, its large and in the scheme of things heavy. Not heavy that I cannot lift it, but heavy and large enough that traveling with the 16" is not as enjoyable as something smaller.

I did that, and there's a lot of positives to going with the 14" but I'll give you one large negative - Screen size. I find myself with my old weak eyes struggling with the smaller screen. I've had to boost the scaling, and this is why I buy 15" laptops.

Food for thought, how often is the laptop in your bag as move to location to location? If its not that much, then keep it, if you're a travel warrior and are at airports, coffee shops, or commuting into work, then the 14" would be a better option

If Apple would release a 15" MacBook Air that would be an immediate buy for me. The Air now is too small and I want to the screen real estate. I think it would be a massive hit for Apple if they released one as I know there are others that feel the same.

If you need the lightness, then choose the 14'. If you need the bigger screen, get the 16'.

The screen size of the 16' was the deciding factor for me. Sometimes I do not have an external monitor connected, or I need a second screen without two on the desk. The added memory bandwidth wasn't something I thought I needed before I used it. It is fast! It also reminds me about the 17' powerhouses of the past, those had some really long lives as 'luggable desktops'.

The weight of the 16" is 4.7lbs while the 14" is 3.5lbs.

The 16" is perfect for home but not good for taking to starbucks.

Really man. I got the M2 MBA and the 16” M1 Max and there is hardly any weight difference between the two.

MacRumors people really need to hit the gym.

But I suggest to get the M2 MBA model for Starbucks because you don’t want to pay the insane repair cost if you spill coffee over your 16” MBP.

The M1 12.9 iPad Pro and M2 MBA are my computers for places like Starbucks because they are cheap to repair basically, but it is not due to weight.

TBH same, with me it was a factor of redundancy. I was always looking to drop the weight as you said it gets old.

LOL, same.

This is why I opted for the 14" MBP. I didn't think the screen size was terribly different then my 15" (spoiler - it is). I felt the 16" MBP was just too big for the travels I was planning this year. On paper my 15" Razer isn't bad, the laptop isn't terribly heavy - unless you factor in the massive power brick, which of course you need to include.

I smell BS

And its not a matter of strength, I bet I could easily beat you in almost any physical activity. I just dont like the feeling of it, especially when its sitting on my stomach when sitting on the couch.

I personally don't like the MBA, it feels too cheap especially next to a MBP but I would buy a 15" MBA just for the portability and screen size.

Seems I already beat you at carrying something lightweight as a 16” MBP and that is despite me being an endurance athlete.

But if it makes you feel better, I will let you believe you will beat me easily at anything.

You haven't beat anybody at anything, and since when is lugging a heavy laptop around a sign of masculinity?

You're the one who is struggling with the lightweight 16" MBP?

And I have given you a free gold model in internet olympics, by confirming you easily beat me at anything which you have been saying publicly. What else do you want so that you can be happy?

You’d lost me way back at “lame14””... but “cheap MBA?” now you’re flying your true colors. Sounds like Little Lord Fontleroy needs a personal trainer to lift that big heavy “laptop”.

I absolutely love the M2 MBA. I do think Apple hit it out of the park. I love the design, the colors, and what it has to offer. I've said this multiple times, had I waited on buying my MBP or Apple released the MBA sooner, I'd probably would have gotten that over the MBP. Don't get me wrong, the 14" MBP is one of the best laptops I ever bought.

I agree the 14" is anything but lame, you get nearly the same performance, a little less battery and a little less cooling head room and of course a smaller display, but overall, it more then makes up for it with the size.

I go back and forth on 16" vs. 14" due to my eyes, but I mostly come to the conclusion that I have such a great computer, so that spending 2,500+ just for more screen real estate doesn't make much financial sense - particularly in this day and age

I contemplated long and hard before choosing the 16" and for my use case I don't regret my decision at all. It's really not that heavy, especially when you consider the power and pleasure it provides. If I were just working in my home studio hooked up to large monitors or travelling all the time and doing work that didn't demand staring at complex FCPX or Premiere Pro timelines with 19 audio tracks and 10 video tracks, I would probably opt for the 14" as it would give me all the power I'd need. It's a superb laptop. (But I'd definitely miss the larger screen and amazing sound when watching movies in bed...)

Why do people bring their Macbooks to the coffee shop? Really curious. Typing from a lame 14" from my couch.
This is question I have too. As someone who has had an iPad and used one as a primary device from 2018-2021.... I'm shocked by how many people bring full on MacBooks (big ones too) to coffee shops to do all their work. Even today I see coffee shops full of laptops left and right.

I don't speak with distain but pure interest only. I could never work on my laptop in a coffee shop. I'd be worried about theft and the glare would be difficult. Distraction would be insane. lol. I'd much rather use my iPad or my iPhone in a coffee shop if I had to do something.

Re: Thread recently.
As a MBP 16' owner, the MBA 2 looks ... really ... REALLY really tempting especially since my MBP 16' is hooked up clamshell to a dock, 2 external drives, a 4k monitor, and several external accessories (card readers, etc). (Got rid of my iPad Pro to justify the 16' MBP). lol.

Tried the iPad doesn't work for me so a Mac it is. Don't generally use them in a coffee shop/bar etc. but if the needs must a 13" MBP or M1/M2 Air is generally fine. 15" - 17" notebooks take up too much landscape IMO.

Theft is a non-issue as similar to an iPad you're not likely to leave a notebook unattended unless it's a very safe space. To me it's just a choice as an iPP and a smaller formfactor Mac are probably not vastly different in size and weight.

TBH I'm on the opposite side of the fence; why use an IOS device when I can use a Mac? I'd really like a 12" rMB with M1 with a couple more ports

Both 14" & 16" MBP's cracking notebooks, equally I don't need the performance currently and prefer the portability and outrageous battery life of the M1 13" MBP :)

IMHO that's the smart move, taking a bath on the 14" makes no sense unless you've got money to burn or have serious eyesight related issues.

Think all comes down to wants and needs, I've always been on the conservative side of HW/SW yet I've never felt left behind or the notebook lacking for the task. Gonna be straight lot is bragging rights; bigger faster and the industry plays if not preys on that.

Want a larger display, plug one in, or maybe Apple will finally answer the customer with a 15" MBA. Apple might just do so given the escalating prices of the Mac outside the US. Apple I am confident is acutely aware of the situation and potential drop-off in sales and will seek solutions.

Basically, coffee shop is a place with table and chair like any other place.
