As a student I lugged around a 17” PowerBook then a 17” MacBook Pro. It was fine. I have a 14” M1 pro now and it is no problem to lug around. It was hard for me to even notice the air in a backpack at all. If I were you I would go M1 Pro. It’s a really sweet machine and the HDMI port is useful to have. Also the super-bright 120 hz screen is sweet too.

Ya, it always confuses me when people warn students against the MacBook Pro because of the weight. Maybe the 16” but the 14” is way lighter than any MacBook Pro I had in college. You’re not gonna notice 0.8 lbs in your backpack.

Hell the iBook I had in high school was almost double what my 14” MBP is.

I just purchased the base 14 M2 Pro. It’s awesome and the battery seems to be better than the MBA M2 thus far 98% and I’ve just finished setup. Coming from the 16/1TB M2 MBA. I like them both however the screen size of the pro and speakers are definitely an advantage.
Better battery than mba m2? Wew you have me excited

The 16 inch is a big, beautiful beast. If I used a laptop as a desktop replacement that would be my pick. The screen is large enough that I don't feel like I always need an external monitor. I could work comfortably off the screen alone.
But man, it's a bear to lug around, which is why I bought an M2 Air to haul with me when I go places to write (taco joints and such.) Love the Air. Love the MBP. Thanks for messing my head up, Apple!

Speakers are much better.

Screen is huge.

No "tappy" keys, like the volume up key on my MBA.

It's just a beautiful device; I do love my MBA also, though.

Going to have my MBP at my place, and my MBA at my nan's.

Both lovely machines, so I'm not knocking any of them.

What are you currently using, if you don't mind me asking?
that actually is a perfect combo.

Apple says that 13in air can stand up for 15 hours of web browsing, 14in pro is 12 hours.
MacBook Air is supposed to have Better battery life.
Does your MacBook Pro last longer than expected?(maybe because there are 4 efficiency cores and each efficiency core got more powerful compared to M1 Pro/Max)

I haven't had it long enough to know yet. However, I received it yesterday around 13:00, after a full charge I started to set it up and I'm on 89% battery.

Is it the entry level 16-inch (M2 Pro, 16GB memory and 512GB storage)? If yes, can you perform a Blackmagic disk speed test and post the result?
I got the 16GB 1TB machine.

I've never used Blackmagic, but I'll try now for you.

It just kept going, so I think it runs on a loop?

Was getting numbers just higher than these, but stopped it as I didn't think it was going to end.

Hope this helps.

I'm curious - why not the M2 Pro Mac Mini? Is it for the convenience of all-in-one i.e. speakers / keyboard / display / trackpad?
Yes, I like all-in-ones.

I also think that laptops just have more character, if that makes any sense?

My first Mac was an iMac, which was a lovely machine. However, as it got older I just saw it as this hunk of a machine, taking up space.

I like laptops, and this one is stunning.

Can you confirm that Apple is turning off the fans when there is no load? They have this under overview online: Thanks to the efficiency of Apple silicon, the fans don’t even have to turn on for most of your daily tasks. And for heavier workflows, the advanced thermal systems move air at low fan speeds.
this has been the case with most macbooks in recent years. my 2015 intel air kept them off unless under load. my m1 pro mbp same deal. they turn on even less on the m1 though

The mystery is only with the 512GB configuration, it looks like the storage speed is only about 3GB/s (half of the speed than the 1TB and more storage). Thanks anyway

I think only a fool would but a one year+ old machine, when a new one has just been launched.

I'm happy with what I have bought.
But what if that fool is watching every penny he has and realizes that the 1+ year old M1 16" Pro is every bit as good (and pretty much exactly the same) as this year's M2 Pro AND $400 cheaper. They're on sale everywhere these days, and a much better value in my opinion. All of the sudden, the fool is the one who spent too much $$ on a new model that does exactly the same thing as last year's model.

Exactly some people waste money, the new MacBooks are not worth it for anyone

If any of you are "worried" about saving money, I truly believe that Apple isn't the brand for you.

I got student discount, so saved over £200 on my machine, anyway.

I believe the best time to buy a product, is when it has just been launched. That way, you get (in my opinion) the best value for your money.

Maybe using the term "fool" was a bit harsh, so I recant that. However, my stance remains.

Whatever makes you happy, right?
