"Anyone" is such a broad, blanket statement.

Seems like this formerly, friendly thread, is becoming a bit toxic.

But then again, I don't expect anything different on MacRumors.
Look I’ll explain what I meant, I feel some products apple releases are not worth it because as it’s new the older one comes at a cheaper price, I always like the latest and greatest but look at m2 iPad Pro it wasn’t worth it as it was the same as the m1 no one needed the m2 so with the m2 being released it means you can get a better deal on the older one. Same with MacBooks I have the M1 Max MacBook Pro and the new one had nothing I would want or need and I doubt anyone needed the extra power you wouldn’t even notice it so why not get the older one at a cheaper price. If it had something huge then I understand but it’s the same machine with a new chip

I'm happy, you're happy, with your machine.

I'm also happy with mine.

Everyone's a winner, right?

Agree it's pretty toxic with all the "you should have bought" comments. Buy whatever makes you happy 👍 - it's your money, not theirs. People get strangely jealous at what they think are "overpriced" purchases.

M2 is a great chip regardless, can't go wrong with it.
Absolute truth.

Thank you for balancing out the thread.

Wishing you well.

Yes I have the same sentiment, still holding on to my M1 iPad Pro, but still, if someone wants to buy it, why not? I think it's fine - as long as you're buying within your means.

But sometimes it’s good to listen to others that are trying to help. I know you wanna justify your machine and price but if you could or saved a lot of money and got the same machine I would go for the M1 Max but it’s cool you enjoy your m2 chip

See, I'm still happy with my 2018 iPad Pro, and feel none of the M series Pros offer me anything.

However, I wouldn't jab at anyone who buys a newer device.

I'd be happy for them.

Seems like you and I are on the same wavelengths.

I'm in a similar place; trying to work out which to keep.

I have a M1 Air 16/512 which I have been happy with, but need to buy a new home machine and thought I would convert the Air into a mostly-static desktop computer connected via HDMI to a single monitor. So I just bought a UK refurb M1Pro 14" 16/512 to try out.

But after using it all-day today in the office and on trains I am struggling to justify it, and might return the 14". I probably go into the office once per week, work from home the rest, and have a M1 Mini 16/256 for normal home office work.

I mainly use Office automation with lots of Teams and Sharepoint, Office Docs, some Docker, K8S, Git and basic dev tools.

Pros;
- screen is amazing, so much better than air (notch is not noticeable)
- smaller bezels are nicer to look at
- camera for video calls looks better, but not loads better
- in-built HDMI port is so useful
- speakers are great

Cons;
- battery life seems to be draining a lot faster, but I think it can get to 14 hours if I keep the display at 50% (just shows how the battery/M1 combo and the efficiency cores on the Air are truly amazing)
- don't need the additional ports, don't intend to use the SD slot
- height (wrists) aren't great, I miss the slim front of the laptop of the Air
- a little heavier but not that much more
- I don't like the 'chunky' old laptop style look

It is a tough call but I am thinking of returning it based on battery performance and this height at the front of the machine - the Air is just nicer to work on.....but the screen on this thing is lovely. Can I justify keeping it for some ad-hoc work at home, evenings and one day in the office a week? Need to give it a few more days I think.

What do you think? Should I go consider the M2 Air.....but the price for the same spec as this 14" is only £10 more on UK Refurb!
Interesting the above 2 cons I have in RED are the reason's I returned the 14". If you go with the 2019 16" it would be about the same thickness as the M1 MBA I believe. Why Apple keeps going with thicker, thinner, beveled non beveled. You have winning designs STICK with them.

I think it's a simple case of you can't please all of the people, all of the time.

Did you get 512GB or 1TB? I hear the 2 NAND 512GB is slower than last year's model with same amount of storage.
'
I have the 2021 MBP16" with 1TB

You are all crazy acting like the 16 inch macbook is a brick lol. Antone who has lived through the older laptop days will tell you the 16 is a breeze to carry around and <2 lbs differnece isnt noticable for 90% of the people. My old eyes need the bigger screen!!

this has been the case with most macbooks in recent years. my 2015 intel air kept them off unless under load. my m1 pro mbp same deal. they turn on even less on the m1 though
I used TG pro to check the fan speeds on the intel MBA. I set the fan to auto(so that macOS at the wheel) and the fans get to 0 rpm when idle.

Exactly some people waste money, the new MacBooks are not worth it for anyone
I would disagree. There is a small subset of people that can benefit from getting an M2 Pro/Max. But overall, your statement is pretty much true especially now with the discounts you can get on the M1 Pro/Max.

I’m not always a fan of this guy but here’s a fantastic video that very well mimics my thoughts on this exact topic: <snip>

Key paragraphs from the video:

<snip> since these MacBook Pros came out, I've seen a lot of people gatekeeping the new MacBooks, saying, oh well, if you are a YouTuber, you don't need any of that stuff. You can just edit all your videos on an M one Mac mini. That's all you need.

And those types of arguments just really get under my skin because they don't really make a whole lot of sense. Like who are you to say that one type of pro is better or deserving of hardware that is superior to another type of pro? A common thing that I see in my comments from Internet haters all the time is people saying, oh well, why do you Luke, care so much about performance? You're just a YouTuber, you can just edit in 1080p. It doesn't matter what the content looks like, everyone's watching it in 720 or 1080 anyway.

But couldn't you say the same thing about Hollywood movie directors? I mean, they're shooting multimillion dollar productions on hundred thousand dollars cameras shooting in four K, six K, eight k, and then half the time the the movie ends up getting compressed and streamed over Netflix in 1080p. So just because you don't think that a certain task needs a certain level of hardware or quality, doesn't necessarily mean that it can’t be justified. You know, maybe you just want these new MacBook Pros specifically because you want a Pro motion mini LED display, you want a new design and you want to look cool.

That is totally fine, guys. I feel like people spend so much energy trying to tell other people what they need to do that it kind ofloses any sort of purpose. So when it comes to picking a MacBook Pro, I I think it's really important not to discount, just pure desire.

I just got my 16" M2 Max today, with 32gb memory and 2tb SSD. I upgraded from a mid-2018 15" i7 and can definitely see the speed difference. I also am a disk hog, so to go from a 500 gb to a 2tb drive makes me very happy. Moving everything over from my Time Machine backups was a snap.

While the 16" is definitely bigger and heavier than the 15" is, I don't think it's going to be that much of an extra burden.

The appliance like behavior of Macs makes upgrading them often unwarranted. I keep my Intel 2015 Broadwell 13 in MBP on my night stand and I am typing this post from it. Its still super fast and works great for casual web browsing. My M1 MBP sitting on my desk would do the same everyday casual tasks. For me, I don't see myself buying another MacBook Pro until Microsoft natively supports Windows on Apple Silicon.

I think the new M2 MacBook Pros are pretty nice machines and if you want it and can afford it, buy it!

For me, it's been fun reading about them, but I'll stick with my M1 Max 14-inch MBP. It's been a phenomenal machine for me since I got it in November 2021 and was a huge upgrade over my 2016 13-inch non-touchbar MBP. Usually I keep my main MBP for about 5 years, so I unless this thing breaks or no longer handles my workflow before then, I'll look into upgrading around 2026.

I don’t even know what the weight differences are, between the three models. All I know is that the 16” Pro is much heavier than the M2 Air.
yes they are heavier! I was really happy to get the 16 M1 Pro, until I got an external 4K screen. Now I consider the 16" too heavy to lug around. Initially the 16" was the only screen, which is great, wouldn't want to go any smaller, but now with an external screen the 16" feels unnecessary. But each time I do lug it around it's great to have more screen estate. Hm.....
