It's amazing... I absolutely love it. I couldn't be happier.

However, I am having some major issues with the software updates and I could use any help you guys have to offer! Here's my situation:

This morning when I got it, one of the first things I did was attempt to run a software update after I connected to my internet. I'm on dial-up at home. After seeing there was a total of 200 MB worth of stuff that I needed to install and update, I cancelled it very quickly after I began it so I could go to a friend's and use their internet connection. Before I left the house, I tried opening iTunes and it prompt me for a software update installment. I just exited the program.

When I got to my friend's, the software update check ran very fast and I began my downloading process all over. Everything was going at lightning speed and then it just randomly slowed down. It started saying that it was going to take up to 6 hours to finish. I was really confused... and I obviously did not want to wait 6 hours, so I cancelled it to hope that the internet connection would pick back up.

The connection continued going on and off from bad to good. Some pages on the actual internet in Safari would load quickly then it would slow down again. I've tried restarting the software update NUMEROUS times and the the thing it needs to run through to figure out if there's anything to install or update will not move AT ALL. Like I said, I've tried this numerous times. The internet connection seems to be okay now, as I am writing this and loading MacRumors.

I just tried opening iTunes, and this time it did not prompt me for an update.

I don't know what to do at this point... or if trying to get a better connection somewhere else will help.

Please help me!

Hmm...maybe you should restart and then go back to your friend's house and let the download finish no matter what. Also, you might want to convince your parents to get basic DSL. It's usually only 5 or 10 dollars more than dial-up-very worth it (and needed too) in today's world!

^ Not everyone can get DSL. Where I live, I only have one option for internet and it's really REALLY crappy dial up. It really sucks, but when you live in a rural area, it happens.

Thanks for the reply, CalBoy. I called Apple's tech support line and the guy I talked to talked me through some things to see if there was anything wrong with the computer itself. It happened to be the connection afterall, and I found a better one later on and finish the update very successfully within an hour. :) I've also been working off of battery for almost two hours now, and I'm down to 57% and an estimate of 2 hours and 45 minutes remaining. Is that normal, good, bad?

I can't explain to any of you how much I'm enjoying my new laptop. It's a whole different experience and I can't wait to get used to everything. There's still so much I want to do... like customizing/modding it a little bit, adding widgets, playing with iTunes... I could go on!

Thanks for all of the help everyone. :)

Oh, and one more thing. I had a 160GB hard drive put in, and it says I have 130GB left. Is that alright?

Oh, and also... about the internet @ home situation... like Eve, I live in a very rural area so the option of getting DSL isn't very likely. However, we do have the ability to get some sort of high speed out there now and a lot of our town uses it. It's not the best, but 8 times faster than what we have now. After getting my MacBook in today, my dad called the company up and they will be installing on Monday. :D

Hard drive space: sounds about right
Battery: sounds about right. Macbooks are great on battery. You should be able to get 4 hours easily. Thats what I get on my iBook.

Good to hear. Frankly, I hadn't considered the fact that rural areas have fewer internet options. I guess I've been spoiled as a Bay Area native:D

katielb, congrats on your macbook! I just switched about 2 weeks ago and beside a few bumps here and there, it's been fantastic! :D
