And I can only hope that until September they've figured out how to fix this abomination.
Black Wallpaper users will not be happy, unfortunately neither will be anyone else. All in all, it seems they have forgotten what their goal should be, because this readability nightmare isn't it, and the low quality app icons don't help. The inconsistencies in the UI are glaring and, frankly, an ugly downgrade.
I understand how it might look great on a case free 16 Pro Max, but the great thing about the previous design is how it goes with every screen, every case and basically every environment.
I never imagined to be let down by Apple's redesign but here I am, typing this on my MacBook while restoring iOS 18 on my 15 Pro.

Edit: how can something so „clean“ be so unpolished?
Funny how this dude puts a beta 1 version on his device then b1tches about it. WTF does he expect? Man some people will complain about their wallets being to heavy. Durp!!

They need time and feedback. But I can’t imagine how 99% of iPad users think losing even the option of regular Split View (with easy space switching) and slide over is preferrable to the mess of windows we have now. It’s truly horrible on an 11 inch screen.

Once again the vocal minority online has ruined things for people. General window management is a messy disaster. DISASTER. Endless floating windows on an ipas screen and you can even really find anything, expose stinks, and you can even go to something like Mission Control to see multiple spaces.

I can’t believe Apple gave into those folks. It’s a mess.

this is the way to go

i feel they won't do it, but it would be nice if this design applied to all platforms. it's actually a bummer they didn't make the same OS for everyone
It's completely bewildering to me that they said they were going to unify all their platforms and now the gap between visionOS and iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS is stark.
visionOS is still one of the best UI's that I've ever seen and I really hope that they take notes throughout the beta and align it more to that.

Brah. If you aren't a developer and you just were too impatient to wait to experience iOS 26 in September like the rest of us, please don’t expect people to give you the time of day as you complain about an incomplete preview which isn't even totally available to the public.

You don’t have to use it though, do you? I use Split View all the time. If I can replicate that I’ll be happy.

you can see it in this video after 6 minute mark: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/219

develop focused video giving developers overview of final design

Missing in Dev Beta 1
-lower refraction of text
- button legibility on variable backgrounds
- No Color Bleeding in final design
- Button label changes color based on background
I watched from 6 minutes to end of video and agree with your comments. Based on what was shared in the video, looks like this specific beta has certain effects turned off. Assuming the finished product performs as described in that video I think it will look good. Especially that last line item, button contents changing color based on background. That will probably help a lot with the legibility issues in this particular beta version.

I’m looking forward to seeing how it gets refined as we get closer to September release date.

I don’t even see from his screenshots what is actually worthy of reverting iOS? I’ve been using it on all my devices since release yesterday. iOS. iPadOS. watchOS. macOS. All up to 26 now. Not a developer and understand the risk of being on Dev Beta 1. Honestly, other than my watch dying after about 4 hours on the new beta, I don’t have any complaints that give any a remote second thought at jumping on beta 1 on day 1. My watch I’ll just reset some settings and likely clear up battery issues. That’s normal. I usually expect that on my phone but it’s doing ok so far.

Seems a bit dramatic reaction for someone who should be used to unfinished products.

Oh and icons typically change EVERY update until they get to release candidates. So anything that seems unpolished or buggy, just wait. They said there are multiple layers to icons now. So that’s expected to be buggy at times. Especially this early. Take a deep breath.

Watching the developer session shared above you get the sense a lot of thought went into this. I’ve got to believe legibility issues will be fixed in future betas. I mean there’s no way the people at Apple who worked on this would say this is legible and should ship in the fall.

Just to add to this: I think there is a lot of revisionist history when it comes to iOS 7. I remember people being horrified by it when the first beta dropped. Now I’m seeing posts on Mastodon and Threads about how iOS 7 was fine at a foundational level (it just needed some refinement/reigning in) but iOS26 is fundamentally flawed from the ground up and refinement wont’t fix it. I find it especially amusing coming from someone like Marco Arment as I seem to remember him shipping an update to Overcast that was universally panned.

Completely agree. iOS 7 was a rough, rough beta, this is very smooth my comparison. Also people forget everything was originally in Helvetica Neue ultra light which wasn’t exactly the most readable.

Toning down the transparency a bit would help immensely. I think the design itself is solid and the next few months should bring the needed fine-tuning to help legibility.

lol so I am not allowed to comment on the bad execution of a radical design change in a forum dedicated to the products that design change will affect. And if I do it’s bitching about it? Got it.
If my initial comment triggers you this much you better stay off the web for a couple of days pal.

obvious question but you realise you installed DEVELOPER beta ONE dont you?

Apologies if you are a genuine developer whose intentions on downloading the software were for legitimate reasons to enable you earliest possible access to help your coding.

I can appreciate the issues with this new design as you point out - but perhaps cut it some slack on developer beta 1....

Do the icons look kind of low resolution to you too, or is it just me?

It feels like I'm looking at 240p screen, potato quality.
Yes they are, first party icons all look very low res. While „updated“ icons for third party apps have the new esthetic AND look as crisp as they did before. Kinda weird.

I know, and no, I am not a developer. I just wanted to come along for the ride until September, like I do every year, but this years first impression left me disappointed.
I understand that it’s a Dev Beta, you can’t just download it like any other update or PB.
Honestly I am just shocked how bad the first beta is because Apple knows there are people like me around, especially for something fundamental like a complete design overhaul, otherwise they wouldn’t allow non devs to register as devs without paying the annual developer fee.
They know commoners and layman will get there hands on this, which isn’t necessarily helped by articles and tutorials on how to get it like the one here on MR. They know people will sht on them if the first impression is bad. And yet they did what they did anyway.
Blame me, as one rando in an Apple forum, all you want.
The bad press is coming up regardless of this thread. And that’s entirely Apples fault.
They will have a lot of polishing to do until the PB next month.

I hope you don't rely too much on your devices and apps functioning properly.

I am happy to hear your experience is good. I personally felt like using a cheap Android skin.
I suppose if you like DB 1 you will be thrilled with the final release. Hopefully all the skeptics and people with complaints like me will be too. I certainly appreciate the mix up and am sure the finished product will be very nice, at least on very recent hardware.
Until then I can’t stand the cartoonish look it gave me on my home screen with a black wallpaper.
One thing I forgot about before upgrading this year was that banking apps don’t work. I am fortunate enough to be able to use PayPal instead of Apple Pay on my iPhone, which obviously also didn’t work anymore. Combined with the calendar app crashing instantly those two facts alone were quite the incentive to downgrade again.

Did I force you to open this thread or ready anything in it?
There are thousands of pointless threads on this forum, if you consider this one of them, good for you, who cares anyway?
All I’m saying is that the first impression stinks. You can agree, disagree, or not care. It’s not my fault you chose to come here.

well I appreciate your honesty.

Frankly, you are braver than I to want to go anywhere near an early developer beta - especially on your main device.

Regardless of how 'easy' Apple make it to access illegitimately - it really is intended for a very small audience at this stage yet of course many more jump in than perhaps should do. We all know its riddled with bugs at the stage and the 'M' suffix on the build number indicates that clearly.

This legibility issue is something that will doubtless be fed back to Apple but id suggest if you want to add value to your keeness to have the latest and greatest before anyone else... participate in the public beta and provide feedback to Apple.

And it’s not my fault you chose to publicly complain about iOS 26's very first external beta, which is intended for access to developers, not being up to scratch.
